  1. Re:I agree on Vista Vs. Gutsy Gibbon · · Score: 5, Interesting

This is definitely not a popular opinion around here but here goes. I've used Vista, along with every other Windows OS ever to haunt our doorstep. I've also used many Linux distro's including Ubuntu Gutsy, Debian(personal preference of the Linux variety), Gentoo, Fedora, Redhat, CentOS, etc. I've been using Vista both at work and at home for about half a year now, and I have absolutely no problem with it.

Despite all the talk of new user friendliness with Ubuntu Gutsy I've yet to see it. My MXL USB Mic doesn't just work when I plug it in. I have to fiddle around with settings for a while. At work, I can't just easily interface with our Active Directory(yes its MS, but its what we use). Sure I've gotten all that working, but it took me a lot of searching and tweaking. Vista may have driver problems, but I've never encountered any major ones. With Linux however, every install is a new driver issue. When it comes down to it, Vista just works. Yes, I can get Linux working with everything, but I don't want to have to spend all that time on an OS when I can just use windows.

Also as a gamer I'm also unable to permanently switch to Linux. Wine works for some, but its just not good enough. I love Linux, but for now it just isn't ready to be my permanent OS. Despite all this trouble with Vista I hear about, I've yet to experience any of it. It runs perfectly on my machine.

When Linux has a dominant share of the market place, and games are put out strictly for Linux, then I'll switch.
Until then, Microsoft will still be king.

That is exactly why this went forward. What just because a company went along with it, somehow it changes the fact? EA still is EA, whether this is a hostile take-over or them dumping piles of cash on Bioware. Origin Systems went willingly as well, what happened to them? Oh yeah, their founders eventually realized it was a bad idea and left. Now the company that had some great franchises, such as Wing Commander, Ultima, etc, now only makes Ultima Online expansions. The truth is that they did it for the money. After a few bombed games we'll hear how the bioware staff/founders are leaving, etc.

That is exactly what I think as well. I don't buy for a second that Saddam had "Nuclear Weapons". Did we go in for oil? Probably. Did we go in for some sort of family revenge? Possible. Honestly I don't care.

Saddam may not have been a threat to America, but he was an evil dictator. There are alot of reasons why going in was a good idea. I agree that its a morally right thing to do, but thats not a reason I choose to list as why I agree with it. The United States is hardly anything close to "good". The only good thing about us is that we have a lot of(soon to be diminished) freedom. We have supported many dictators(including Saddam at one point) over the years. We overthrew a democratically elected president because he was gonna ruin one of our corporations banana fields.

In the end we do what will continue to serve our purpose, but in this case I feel that every dictator we take down is one step closer to making up for all the dictators we've supported. Plus Saddam was an ass, he totally deserved it(joke, sorta).

  9. Not a chance. on Will GPLv3 Drive Users from Linux to FreeBSD? · · Score: 4, Interesting

GPLv3 may have some contraversy around it, but some of those reasons stated seem like FUD to me. For instance, they mention that software is required by the FCC to be end-user replaceable in devices such as software driven radios. Last I checked one of the main purposes of GPLv3 was to allow end-user replacement of software. Isn't that why they changed parts of it, so that no tivoization happens again? That alone makes me want to ignore the rest of their reasons. If they can't get that simple part correct, most likely everything else is a load of bull.

  10. Smells like FUD on Spotlight on Facebook Groups Affects Microsoft · · Score: 5, Insightful

Facebook, like many of these sites, uses an advertisement service. In this case, as mentioned in the summary, it uses Microsoft. So let me get this straight, someone is mad because a vaguely random placed ad is on some hate speech group thats part of user-content created website? From that Idealog link, it really sounds like he thinks some marketing guy up at Netflix said to himself, "Hey, look at this F**K Islam group, lets buy an ad space there." More likely they just bought ads with Microsoft to be place anywhere that uses Microsoft's ad service. Its not facebook's fault, and definitely not Netflix/T-Mobile's fault. This isn't television where you can specify during what show you want your ad on. Its a dynamic ad, it places it randomly among whatever sites use the system. Netflix bought a service from Provider A, doesn't mean they support Random Hatespeech Facebook Group B. This really must be a slow news day.

The old architecture isn't going anywhere. Sun and IBM may have good architectures but the fact is that x86 is fueled by consumers, and right now consumers work with Windows. As sad as it may be, I highly doubt Microsoft will switch windows over to a new architecture anytime soon. When they do, no doubt it'll be as half-assed as it always is. Right now x86 will be around for a good long time thanks to Windows. Speaking as a gamer, I'll never completely switch to linux, or any other OS either, until it has the same support from developers as Windows has now. I use both Linux and Windows, but right now I'm stuck on x86 because I'm stuck on Windows.

Actually I did, bought it for my girlfriend the day it came out. Its an average game, didn't really bring me into the game and it just didn't interest me. I personally preferred the RE and SH games over Eternal Darkness. In all honesty it bored me to tears, except the occasional "psych out" thing that happened. Thats what I disliked the most. Yes it was original, but it really brought me out of the whole atmosphere of the game. So far, IMHO, they haven't really shown they have the skill to work with UE3.

Both the original story and this story is little on hard facts. Neither the original suit or this counterclaim by Epic has any real facts to clue in to who is right or wrong. Perhaps Epic is right, or maybe Silicon Knights are just incompetent. Personally, despite me not liking any of SK's games, I'll wait for the conclusion to the trial or the settlement to make any decisions who to flame.

International Law isn't what is applicable here. This is United States law. JnJ have an trademark here in the United States on the Red Cross and, as others have pointed out here, licensed it to ARC for non-profit. It doesn't matter what the Geneva Convention said, its still not relevant in an US Trademark dispute. Not to mention if I remember correctly the Geneva Convention talks about a red cross on white, whereas this dispute is on a red cross in general. JnJ is in the right here, the ARC are sub-licensing out a trademark to competitors of JnJ despite agreeing not to use the trademark on any for-profit manner. Considering all the trademark disputes red cross has brought up about games and others using the red cross for innocent purposes this is their due payback. --milt

Well, I admit I haven't used Alpha(Beta) search or any of the other mentioned ones, however after examining the new Google interface I have to say I'm disappointed. The main reason is that while it does bring up related searches on the other tabs, such as the mentioned search for Google, for some searches it misses related searches on quite a bit. For example any search for any game no matter how popular will result in only Web results. Such as Xenogears will only bring up web results even though the image search is filled with Xenogears related, and named, pictures. So in this case the new features don't really seem all that great. I'm sure they're useful to someone, but not me.
