I've got a bunch of "old" machines.

There's a LOT at stake on big sites.

Not so much like Slashdot - but company reputation, money through advertisment and e-commerce just to name a few.

What happens if a company with an online store or a site that feeds content to many, many co-brands goes down? You look like an idiot and you lose face and revenue. Not good!

Big sites usually mean big money. Having them down for even a second can be disastrous!

  9. Linux is fine, but... on We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties · · Score: 1
That doesn't mean you can put mission critical systems on any commodity Pentium box. As someone mentioned, cheap pwer supplies and IDE drives are no way to run a non-stop sight.

Sun hardware (with the exception of the 5/10, heh) is built very solid. They offer redundant power supplies, RAID built-in among other nice features.

It's not Linux so much but really the choice of hardware. You get what you pay for.

It's also dependant on your design. If you need 24/7 service then you design two or more of everything into the mix.

I'm setting up a nice site with two E250's with redundant power supplies, RAIDs and Resonate. I don't want to be called at 3am... :)

Anyone out there know any other cool key combos for Suns? Like how to make those stupid contrast and audio volume keys work? I've tried several combos, no luck. The "sleep" key would be helpful, too...

I dig my Sun keyboard too - lotsa little pushy buttons. STOP-A. Wooohoo! Try this on your server. ;>

Naw, in all seriousness... I'm starting to take a liking to keyboards without number pads and scrunched together a little like the Happy Hacker or similar.

First, you go to school. You do apprenticeship and/or freelance. You build up clients, charge them and include the software you need to do the job into your work. If you're a professional at a full-time gig, your job pays for it.

It doesn't matter how good you are, that's never been the issue here.

The fact is, you've STOLEN the software.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not justifying the insane prices that get charged for this stuff, though.
