...I think you're right. It's only GNOME (haven't used KDE - much) that causes problems. I installed Redhat's errata RPMs and GNOME blew up. Nice. Testing? Feh.
I'll have to try the ftp issue and see what's actually blowing up - but it's on this one machine that conincidentally is running GNOME/E. The destination host, also RH6.0 is fine...
I tried "ftp" and "ncftp" figuring maybe an FTP client issue - no difference. Must be something...
Most of my youth was spent in front of Turbo Pascal and Turbo C. I still have oodles of disks somewhere with tons of code. A BBS, an export license tracking system, even an office suite of sorts!
Even funnier, to this day I use "joe" as my quick-n-dirty text editor because I have all the keystrokes memorized! Ha!
I spent much of my youth in front of Turbo Pascal. Wrote a good deal of stuff in it, too - including a sort of office suite! Wasn't exactly easy, but hell, it was a lot of fun. Wonderful environment (to this day I use "joe" because I remember all the keystrokes, hehehe).
Hmmm, seems like Redhat is everyone's bitch these days.:)
I'm kinda glad though - at least one distribution is becoming more or less the standard with which commercial vendors identify.
As long as all the goodies that Redhat gets are shared with the rest of the community ala GPL, I have no problem with that.
As a long time SGI advocate and user, it's good to hear this news - but like someone said - it sounds like their "server" doesn't have X yet, or OpenGL. In time, I hope...
What about a "keyword daemon" that just transmits fun words like "espionage, bombs, C-4, FBI, assassination, nuclear, biological..." across the wires to select "bounce" hosts. That'll put their little monitoring system on overload with enough people running it. Somehow the IPs would have to change, or each client only transmits 500 words and then it dies... Heh.:)
Do you know how much money SGI makes in "black funds" selling Cray equipment and services to the government? Research institutions? Hollywood? Medical fields?
As a matter of fact, I exchanged several Emails with the fellow that created it. Indeed too bad that it didn't make it. I never did get a hard drive, or even a floppy for my TRS-80. The Expansion Interface was a serious POS - the solder coated ribbon cable system would cause too many reboots or freezes - and even then, the thing was forged by Lucifer himself. So, I stuck with the cassette and no modem. Oh well. Still have all the geat though - and man, the X10 controller works great with it.:)
Yeah, the folks at Loki are kickin' booty. Civ:CTP is a marvelous port. Picked up my copy and LinuxExpo and have spent mucho time with it since. If Linux games are all like this, it's a Good Thing.:)
Also of note, there's an interview with Loki in the latest copy of Linux Journal.
I still have my machines... A TRS-80 Model I, an original IBM PC (fully loaded with add-ons) and a Commodore 64. To this day I use the Commodore monitor as a video monitor for the SGI.:)
How ya gonna hide trojan horses in stuff when you have the source code? I suppose one could download binary-only versions, but that's YOUR fault and not that of Open Source.
Yeah, that'd be pretty phat. It should not be too difficult as it's already ported to IRIX. Use Mesa rather than OpenGL...
Eudora would be nice - a complete, full function Email client. Postilion is neat, Balsa is half done, Netscape stinks... A nice GUI Email client would be really nice, and it's not too much to ask for.:P
Cool Edit would be nice, but check out "nedit" and "Slick Edit Pro" for starters - pretty darned nice.
That's all I'm saying - show some respect for the guy. I'm not saying worship him because he's a Kennedy, and I never said I idolize the guy either. To me, he's just another Joe - and the one AC's comments hit it right on the head - would they look that hard for YOU? But that's a different discussion.

Still have it, including original docs and disks, along with a few aftermarket books... Talk about memories... :)

...you freakin' fascist fscks! Get off my wire! :)
6.0 is glitzy and all, but it's not very stable, in my experience.
Show me the product! ;>
Hire two punks out of school for the price of one "old timer" who knows what he's doing? Hmmm, you decide, Moneypenny.
One machine locks up solid on huge FTPs.
Another machine, after applying the errata RPMs, no longer starts GNOME/Enlightenment.
I've heard of many, many other people complain about RH6 now as well.
Come on, get with the program Redhat!
Do you know how much money SGI makes in "black funds" selling Cray equipment and services to the government? Research institutions? Hollywood? Medical fields?
It's the "proprietary" hardware that makes an SGI what it is - the top of the line graphics workstation. Where have you been?

"I forgot to change the batteries."
"Wouldn't you know it, WindowsID crashed."

So long, Netscape. Nice knowin' ya.

In related news, QNX is hoping to partner with anyone. Anyone out there want an OS cheap? Please? ;>
It's not CALLdera, it's CALdera. ;>

If ya can't take the heat, stay the fuck out of the kitchen boys.
