Oh, but today's Iraq "war" is no more a war than the Clinton presidency wars, it's just a police action. The U.S.A. is there to assist the citizens and the democratically elected government in maintaining peace.

I didn't know that Katrina was a war either. Of course I did know that Bush was and is responsible for hurricanes and other weather phenomena. I've requested sunny weather with temperatures in the 80s this week at the New Jersey shore.

I would argue that if the state officials are unwilling to admit that most of the tickets are for raising revenue, the money should not have a way to funnel back to the police. Unfortunately, that is exactly what would happen if the money were to go into some general fund.

Yeah, I can agree with that. There should be no possibility of the money getting back to the ticketing organization.

Fortunately, if Comcast cuts me off, then I do have the option of going to Verizon FIOS. I haven't had any major problems with Comcast though... yet.

If it truly is about safety, then I say all "revenue" generated by speeding tickets should go to a charity that is not affiliated with the police department. Guess what the likelihood of that would be. I'm betting ZERO.

Wow. I've never heard of anyone who had virtually the same opinion as me on this subject. I've told a variety of people that I think that the money collected by ticketing should not go to the local or state police organizations, but should go into the general federal fund just like federal taxes. This would eliminate the incentive to unjustly hand out tickets for various traffic violations including speeding. It seems to me that some townships set some speed limits artificially low just so they can cash in on those who violate these limits.

This certainly doesn't have much to do with Comcast's arbitrary bandwidth limits, but the wise moderators have failed to mark any of this discussion as "Off Topic".

The company that I work for has mainframes that disallow the execution of data, and this is, or has been, prevented by hardware. It just isn't possible to execute data. Oh... it has been this way ever since I've worked at this company, over 25 years.

Even Microsoft now has, in XP and I'm guessing later OSes, Data Execution Prevention (DEP). Most people don't turn it on because it does have a slight effect on performance. You can find the option by going to My Computer, Properties, Advanced Tab; Click "Settings" in the performance frame. When the Performance Options box comes up, go to the Data Execution Prevention tab. If you want to be secure, you select "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:". I don't know how effective this is, but I assume that it works. If your passport reader is running on a Microsoft OS, then this option should be turned on. Note that this doesn't stop you from overflowing your buffers, but does stop the execution of that data, thus avoiding those types of exploits.

This is why the location of the temperature sensors really doesn't matter so much for the purpose of tracking climate change: a hot location getting hotter is as important as a cool location getting less cool.

Ohhh... so since the location doesn't matter, then lets put the sensors inside freezers in peoples houses. Then we can accurately record the cooling effect of developed areas.

But seriously, if your goal is to determine average global temperature, then I'm afraid that locating all your sensors on sun exposed asphalt will not give the same result as locating all your sensors on mountain tops.

what's wrong with measuring temperatures on asphalt

The asphalt, or concrete (or a variety of other things) have thermal retention, which means that heat is retained past sunset and re-radiated. This biases overnight lows.

Is the problem that all those air conditioners are raising the temperature of the air? Perhaps we should measure that.

I expect a democrat will be elected in the next presidential election.

Many voters choose a candidate based on their impression of the candidates personality and image, with little thought about the candidate's, or candidate's party's, platform. The main stream media has much to do with who those voters select. There are a couple types of single issue voters, the ones who stick with their pet issue for all elections, and those who flit to whatever the current popular issue is. I assume that other voters, those who do pay attention to all the issues, are likely to stick with a particular party. I once dated a girl who would vote for any woman over any man, without regard to their positions on the issues. *sigh* Oh I can't site any studies showing this kind of behavior, I just suspect that people are like this based on my own experiences; all anecdotal evidence.
