    The Linux kernel is the brain.
    The GNU software is the limbs, eyes, ears, nose, mouth and so on.

    If you want it so people have to pay for it, then go and work for Microsoft's marketing department, don't turn GNU/Linux into what it was made to oppose.

    It's the truth, and it's a warning, too.

    Nanotech and the CIA based security jobs that are cropping up in silicon valley now, are not the kind of industries where you can get into unless you have a lot of experience (and security clearance, in some cases). And nanotech research and/or development can easily be farmed out to countries where wages are low, and labor laws are lax.

    I'd welcome anyone who disagrees, to put up their own points.

    There is a shrinking market for those with postgrad degrees and many years of experience. What's left, is about to be farmed out to East India.

    The countries with the most lax labor laws (short of allowing child or prison labor, and I am not even too sure of that) will get all the new jobs, in the near future.

    As for those just getting in, there are NO more entry level jobs in the tech sector. Heck, there are no more entry level jobs anywhere except in fast food restaurants.

    The party's over.

    Thus we had a system designed to prevent airplane hijacking that was forced to ignore the single most effective predictor: if the person is an Arab.

    I have a SCSI CD-ROM (and I've got 4 EIDE hard drives, no room for a IDE CD-ROM) off an Adaptec AIC-7850 PCI SCSI Controller Card.

    Setting up the PC to boot from SCSI doesn't work on this system (for some reason the SCSI card doesn't take over until an actual driver calls on it).

    So how do I get the darn install process going??

    C is a scripting language. It is no less interpreted than Perl. Perl can, by the way, be compiled into assembly code. So can PHP, I believe. C cannot run on its own, nor can Perl or PHP - it must all go through a middleman (interpreter/compiler) first.

    The ONLY language that IS NOT scripting language, is assembly/machine language. Machine code needs no middleman interpreter or compiler to run. It is also 100,000 times harder to code and debug.

    C is just more.. prestigious... than other scripting languages.

    Fuel cell technology typically produces water as part of its exhaust.

    I do not think a country that uses such technology, thus, will need to fight over water...

    and apparently, there's no room to add a RAID system to it, according to the article.

    Given it's mediocre benchmark ratings, I'd want to upgrade its processor and video card upon arrival.

    This computer reminds me of dating women. The good looks don't mask the mediocre performance, but my less pretty desktop remains more reliable. :)

    I'm not trolling here... I am dead serious when I say I am not ~crazy~ enough to try and compile this.

    I do not care what anyone says, every time I have assembled the dependency libs and tried to compile this beast, it has been disastrous sixty ways to Sunday.

    Even a successful compile takes ~hours~ (see the Garnome stats).

    I'll wait until the RPMs come out...

    I am a HEAVY GUI user, I use it as much as any Windows granny ever would, but I also have five terminal windows open at all times, and I use them, oh do I ever use them.

    The feedback I get from using the terminal is absolutely priceless for me.

    I would also add to my wishlist, as a corollary, that all gui apps have the OPTION to log all internal stuff (potential output, which could serve as debugging data) to a file.

    This way, granny still doesn't have to see what is going on, but a power user, or a troubleshooter, can.

    Of course that takes more effort.

    How about making all applications based upon a system where all functionality is handled in the application's libraries, and merely called by the executable.

    That way, the GUI apps can be built right on top of that, without sacrificing functionality either way.

    The power users still have their interface, and grandma has her point and click.
