You don't pay primo money for a development linux kernel, either.
Windows 2000 will charge you up the hiney - once for the client version, and once for one of three server versions, and yet you get these huge, gaping bugs.
A relationship with one geek gamer girl. But I won't be trolling the gaming chatrooms or the deathmatches any time soon. Where do ya meet 'em without coming off as a jerk?
Wasn't that what one woman said in one of those PC Gamers ads?
They're literally creating the impression that women hate gaming and males who are gamers, but the sad part is it's true. In high school we used to be into that stuff and I found this to be true, the hard way.
So honestly if the female market is being failed it is probably because they're making it known that, aside from 400 some odd women gamers, they don't want anything to do with it or the guys who are into it. This to me is a feedback loop.
Not that I'm trying to troll or feed the open source natalie b.s. crowd more fuel. The women who are into gaming also run into hostility and unwanted sexual attention, and that's something the geeks can do something about in order to put some good karma into this pathetic and sorry situation. Not that anyone'll see this some 400 articles down, but I can still wish:)
You can't get a blank DVD media for that price. It would cost $25 per blank DVD disc.
Add to that the nomimal cost of the DVD-RAM itself (only $500 or so) and you have a dauntingly cost ineffective home grown piracy job going. IOW it would be less costly to just go buy the movie on DVD from Best Buy for ~$20.
"We think it gets around what killed Divx," said Nabil Lawandy, Specra Science's CEO. "There's no phone line, no credit card transaction, no special player needed, and no Big Brother element to it."
The idea of a DVD that will degrade to an unplayable state does look stupid, but the thing that killed DIVX was the implied erosion of privacy. At least these guys pay very strong attention to bolstering the DVD rental industry while explicitly respecting people's privacy. You have to give 'em a little slack on that count.
Monolith might get more people playing Shogo in Linux than they do in Windows. To wit: I could rarely find a Shogo server when the game first came out, and now, hell, multiplayer Shogo? What? Huh? Whassat?
They'll probably double their customer base. IMHO. (Great game, but man, what a fickle gaming crowd, or something.)
"Huh?" paused Trent Reznor, puzzledly shuffling through his lyrics. ======================
That's my depiction of the consequences of this unrelenting woman bashing crap. There are some geeks who are incredibly territorial about the computer profession and are really hostile to women. They usually don't have a girlfriend or any serious relationships with women (okay so I'm stereotyping, but I'd bet the farm on this one), and they get what they deserve.
But then they make other geek women angry, defensive and suspicious, and then the rest of us wind up having to make up for these guys. Worse yet some women are driven away from the 'geek' lifestyle, or if they're into it, they don't jump in with the rest of us for fear of being savaged by some open source natalie portman troll, so the geek guys are stuck hanging with each other. So we wind up getting what those trolls deserve, too.
However, there is a bigger picture involved here. Geek girls don't catch 1/100th as much shit as, say, a stay at home dad. I'll also throw in Hispanic Jews, african american linux users, asian country western singers, white rappers, and women soldiers, and if you know what I am talking about when I mention those things, you'll understand that the crap geek chicks get, is nothing new in a society where everyone is assigned implicit boundaries by race, religion and gender. Knowing this won't stop the open source natalie portman crap but at least you'll know what mentality the trolls are 'bowing down' to.
I'm a PC bigot and Doom was nothing compared to Marathon. I played Doom. I played Marathon II. When Marathon II came out I stopped playing Doom. I upgraded to Windows 95 for Marathon II.
So call me a doom trasher - when the subject of Marathon vs Doom comes along I say I doubt Doom inspired Marathon. Even if it did, Marathon was clearly the result of Bungee seeing where Doom was, and aiming very, very far ahead of id software.
IMO Marathon 2 ranks up with Ultima, Star Control II, and System Shock 1/2, as one of the all time greats, as far as player immersiveness is concerned. The only game I feel clearly surpasses this one in quality and immersiveness is Half-Life (wow). Marathon 2 was also the first that I can recall that had something besides 'player 1 go kill player 2' style deathmatch.
It was the first game that I could recall that had a full scale alien invasion where everyone else wasn't dead and you actually had NPC's alive and fighting at your side. The lack of a sense of being 100% alone was a relieving break from the standard fare.
I'm gonna have a GREAT time playing this game and hitting those Durandal terminals and watching those NPC's go at it again:)
By the way I could smell a GPL move coming from Bungee. I am not at all surprised by this news. Way to go!
What status quo? I don't see this so called domination. Maybe the top ten big shots in my company enjoy these so called benefits of being male, but I sure don't. Just because 1 or 2% of the men control everything doesn't mean the other 99% have any 'domination'. We're getting screwed just like you.

I've read a lot of Jon Katz articles and like any editorial writer sometimes I just don't get what motivates him to write what he does.
However this article about the dangers of allowing a megaconglomerate to control the creation and distribution of entertainment, says everything I want to say about why Jon Katz bashers strike me as short sighted and just plain complacent.
The moment I heard about an AOL/Time-Warner merger, the first thing that went through my head was: information monopoly alert!
Of course, like a driver going at 65mph in the driving rain, you'll understand what Katz is ranting about only when it hits you in the face.
she said 'slow but steady swell'. (Sorry, but I had to say it.:)
I wish there were more geek women around. If for no other selfished assed reason than I want to socialize with them and not the mainstream women. Save meeeeeeeeeeee!
Last month, the Wall Street Journal surveyed Americans to learn our biggest concerns in the coming millenium. Topping the list was not crime, not terrorism, not global war. Rather, the greatest fear we Americans have, as we face the new millenium, is losing our privacy. (Wednesday, October 13, 1999)
Maybe people will start noticing these lesser movies and appreciate the quality of some of them, and generate a market demand for someone to provide seed money for more stuff from that artist. Maybe one of these folks will strike it big.
Release your own version of Linux, all open source
Release attendant proprietary apps, all closed source
Rig the app so it'll seg fault all over the place if it tries to run on another OS, because of some inconspicuous changes in, say, the libc library.
However, Corel would not get very far because it wouldn't take much for the libc coders to figure out what it is in the code that makes the app run right. It would take a lot of comparing and diffing between the corel libc and the normal glibc 2.1 and patching in the diffs and then taking them out one hunk at a time to see which hunks are needed to keep the app stable.
Of course there are other theories:
Corel might lock up some part of the Corel Linux OS kernel/core OS as closed source. Not possible. They're locked into the GPL.
Corel's apps might work with other Linux distributions with the appropriate library patches, or just right out of the box, and thus this whole thing might be a false scare.
My hat is off to RedHat. They have managed to have it so all kinds of new commercial apps (like UT) rely not on RedHat, but glibc 2.1 - which is, basically, the only reason I see for getting RedHat 6.1.
I believe humanity rules the earth and when it comes to our survival pitted against the survival of other animals, we come first. If I can only save my dog or my baby from a burning house, the dog's gonna roast. Sorry.
However, that ruling status brings some responsibility with it. We can't go around killing other species off with total indifference or malice, without eventually screwing up the ecosystem we rely for our very survival.
Aside from the 'maybe someone bigger and badder might look at us and judge us by how we treat the weaker animals' aspect that only Patrick Stewart can teach us on TV (for now), it is good karma to save these penguins if you've got the money to burn on it. (And some people do have that kind of money). If you do it you're doing it because you want to, and if you do it without anyone knowing you're doing it for the right reasons, and that is an indicator of a man's character.
Now I for one feel that more money should go to starving kids in Rwanda, or better yet, to the local loaves and fishes in my home town. The real people who should pay for protecting the penguins should be the people who spilled the oil! But since they won't, I won't fault anyone who chips in their place.
My point is I don't see any dead babies or compromised human rights coming from donating to a save-the-penguins campaign. Then again I'm not from PETA or some insane leftist envirowhacko group either.
But I'll say this - I've seen the exact sort of insane animal rights mindset that has driven you to make such an angry bitter post. They are really senseless people who would sell out their own species in a heartbeat (I mean these guys can't even tell if they'd rescue a dog or a baby from a burning house first! gee!), and they deserve 100% of your vitriol. I just think you need to pinpoint these people and give them your hatred, instead of lashing out blindly at anyone who lifts a finger for a lesser animal's sake.
Just my opinion
flame on:)
BTW: Does anyone know how much those little sweaters cost per unit?
