    Does it play the DVD, full screen? if the answer is yes then the GUI is irrelevant, the speed is irrelevant, the threading is irrelevant, they are just niceties for getting the movie playing and doing other things while the movie is playing (are you watching the movie or not?)

    Borders extend vertically only in US law, not in the rest of the world .... .. another law that does not apply outside the USA

    Gravity is just a theory but you still fall, and space probes still get to their destination using calculations based on the theory

    The USA currently uses significantly more energy per head of population than any other country, this is contributing to pollution, which everyone agrees would be good to reduce, and importing a large amount of energy costs a lot, which again everyone agrees would be a good idea to reduce....

    Try playing YouTube videos on a iPhone .... look they work ....and Flash does not work on the iPhone

    The iPhone can play Youtube video without Flash....

    You have obviously never tried installing a different version of Windows onto a PC

    Try getting a manufacturer to support you installing XP on a machine supplied with Vista or a installing Vista on an machine supplied with XP, and you mostly hit a brick wall of "install the supplied operating system and drivers"

    The problem is not Linux, it is that they have not tested the system with any other operating system than the particular version(s) supplied with it ...

    Try running a flash plugin on every browser on every operating system and you will soon find that very many do not have a working plugin .... because Adobe have not done one, and no-one else knows enough to write one....

    The difference is that HTML5 is very well documented and relatively easy to implement and unlike flash has other uses beyond pretty layouts ...

    The other advantage is that an HTML5 page is accessible to the disabled, unlike flash.....

    The Microsoft Tax is where a PC/Laptop/Netbook is logically installed with Windows and Microsoft are paid, regardless of the operating system it is finally delivered with, so you end up paying for Windows regardless if you wanted it or not

    Microsoft have been taken to task over doing deals with manufacturers whereby they only give discounts if the manufacturer sells *all* their PC with Windows, this has been deemed illegal...

    But since most PC preinstalled with windows also come with other software and adverts for software and services that mostly pay for the bulk cost of Windows, you don't normally get a discount for not having a operating system, or having an alternative system, so the Microsoft Tax appears to still exist ...

    It appears to be (once I turned flashblock off) a music player .... exactly what HTML 5 can do ...?

    I have one of those already in windows and it will always be faster more efficient and more integrated than any flash app ever can be?

    You can't injure burglars (except in self defence), but we can play DVD's on Linux ....

    The policy does affect the survival of Girls and their quality of life (because so many end up in orphanages) but the number born is unaffected

    This is because most fatal road accidents happen on urban roads (30-40 mph) and it is usually a pedestrian who is killed, the difference between hitting a pedestrian an 30 and 40 is at 30 they usually survive, anything above 40 and speed is not a factor, dead is dead

    the 10% is the 10% of people who get hit by a car at 40mph (on the few bits where people can actually do this)

    We have this problem with "safety cameras" (speed cameras) in the UK ...

    I can drive past one on a icy road, breaking 7 different traffic laws, and they will not respond because I am not exceeding the legal limit ..and I can pass one at 3am on a empty straight road with good visibility, where and it will go off

    Speed is not the issue, inappropriate speed is

    30mph in a 30mph zone outside a school at closing time is much too fast
    70mph on a motorway (70mph national speed limit) on a foggy night is much too fast ... but this device will not know that

    The difference is between a published item and a source

    Sources are shielded, publishers are not

    I cannot sue a publishers source, because they do not have to reveal who they are, but I can sue the publisher....

    Is a blog post/comment a source, when everyone can read it (and be defamed by it)

    Licence for 5 developers copies of Windows + $300/year is much more than nothing

    Licence for 5 developers copies of Windows + 5 licences for the development tools for windows + $300/year is much much more than nothing

    Persuading customers to pay extra to factor in the cost of a licence for Windows (MSSQL Server etc...) costs more than nothing ...and it still will not localize to the languages of my users because they are not supported by Windows

    Err... Top Gear is a UK programme, so it uses Litres and Miles ....

    Metric is what "the continent" uses, we use our own weird hybrid system

    The UK, the only country where you can drive 3 miles down the road at 30 mph, fill up with 30 litres of fuel, under a 3m bridge, and go to the pub for a pint .....

    so not only doable but doable now .....

    Knowing what the symptoms are is different from knowing the names of the parts

    You need to know enough to work it ...

    Car: it makes a funny noise when I go into fourth

    PC: It takes a long time to boot

    But knowing the difference between RAM and Harddrive space, is like asking a driver if the car has a turbo or not .... I don't need to know to be able to use it ....

    LaTeX is not an editor

    Word is not a document publishing system

    If I want to write an academic paper to be published LaTeX is my first choice but Word would not be my second, a proper document layout and publishing system would be

    If I want to write a help document, letter, or similar Word/OpenOffice would be my first choice (if on Windows)

    Different tools for different problems - not a one tool for everything

    Word is a very bad text editor, a quite good document editor (my opinion), and a very bad document layout system, use it for what it is good for ....

    Use a reasonably secure password that you don't use for any other purpose as the answer to all the questions

    i.e. use it as an alternative password, not as an bypass

    They are a user, they do not know, do not need to know, and do not care what is in the box!

    Have you have never worked in IT? the average level of user barely knows there is a box under their desk, let alone what is inside it
