    Patent : a temporary monopoly to repay the innovator and encourage innovation

    Since the Patent holder is rarely the innovator now and it actually seems to stifle innovation it is broken and should be discarded

    Copyright, is the similar but is not quite as broken but should be restricted to a limited time not extended so that the copyright holders great grandchildren benefit .....

    I liked the Mac adverts they were funny (the British version was better still)

    This is simply stating we have a large market share, which everyone already knows, or doesn't care

    I'm not a PC or a Mac or a Linux I'm a person who sometimes uses a computer, and runs programs on the computer, It runs an operating system - If I am aware of the operating system at all it is because it has got in my way

    Car Analogy : I got in my car and drove to work - which make of car was it : I don't know, and don't care, it got me here anyway....

    I love forms - with Family Name / First Name fields

    Now fill this in for a Javanese they don't have surnames/lastnames/Family names

    and watch them put them in the wrong order for the more than half the worlds population who put their family name first ....

    As in all of these surveys do they disclose how many people refused to answer, and how did they keep the answers honest

    I love the surveys of teenagers that ask them questions about illegal activities, most of them will answer one thing in a group, another on their own and another again with adults

    Most witch trials were civilian courts and were not generally supported by the church

    Heresy trials of the various Inquisitions were a different matter and were not trials against witchcraft but heresy e.g. Cathars and the Waldensians who were not witches but Christians who disagreed on points of doctrine (Dualism and Sainthood/Apostolic Succession)

    I think you need a refresher in the Inquisition yourself.....

    The problem with an omnipotent deity is that by definition they can do anything so they can fool you as much as they want (if they want to) and simply not being around anymore is not an escape since they just arrange things to be as they want forever ....

    *If* a God exists (which I am not convinced of) then I hope it is omnipotent because if it is not then it's just an alien with pretensions ....

    I've seen Mos Def in other things ... he does not suit the part...

    In the Books, Record, Radio versions it was not specified what he looked like colour/race/ethnicity except that he looked "slightly odd" but otherwise could pass for human, the TV show gave him very blue eyes ....

    "The" Movie was the outcome of a scriptwriting process where the scriptwriter did not understand the point.....

    The first draft ended with the destruction of the Earth!

    The draft that ended up being made was not how Douglas wanted it ... and was horribly mis-cast (Ford should be knowledgeable and a man of the world, not an bumbling idiot, just odd)

    The good bits were pure Douglas the bad bits were shoehorned in by the screenwriter

    This is the problem - If God can do everything then he can do anything!, no matter how illogical or apparently impossible - which means that we cannot discover anything because God can just change the rules anytime he likes ...

    God could have created the universe in 4004 BC and made it look like it was created several billion years ago ... or he could have done it last tuesday ... we could never tell unless he wanted us to

    I like to think that if God exists that he wants us to work out what is going on and so has left just enough clues to find out ...

    Except of course that in the Dark Ages they did not burn Witches (most were hung) and they were not as many as people think (only a few thousand over 150 years) and many where not old and not women, and the Church were against the practice ...

    So in the Not very Dark ages not very many witches (of all ages and genders) were not burnt, and not by the church ...

    This is the problem with truth : Everything most people know to be true is wrong

    My experience is the same

    Q: What version of Windows are you using
    A: Word 2000

    To open a document (any document) they open Word and navigate to it using the open file dialog they assume you mean IE when you say explorer since they have probably never used Windows Explorer

    Note these are not stupid/dumb people they are just non technical and do not care ...

    The answer is to simply fail them automatically, the syllabus says they learn the subject, if they refuse to then they fail....

    Otherwise, I believe that blood is normally found in the lungs and the brain is only used to cool the body, can I automatically pass my exams and become a surgeon....

    Apple don't sell operating systems they sell complete systems

    Microsoft don't sell complete systems they sell operating systems and application software

    The Microsoft tax is due to suppliers not offering any alternative to Windows and often charging you for something you do not want (or even for removing Windows...)

    So Apple are big enough to do proper testing so drivers don't crash the OS

    Linux is obviously "big enough" as well since those don't seem to crash it either

    But Microsoft apparently is not!

    Or could it be that Apple drivers are written or tested by Apple, Linux drivers are (mostly) written by the Linux Community, and Windows drivers are written by the hardware companies...

    Microsoft's model for getting drivers written is broken ...

    Rule:If the grass moves look out for Lions
    Upside: Less likely to get killed by lions
    Downside: Very slightly less likely to catch game

    Homeopathy : Take this it will make you better because of these unproven and very unlikely reasons
    Upside: You might get better regardless, or because of the placebo effect you might get better
    Downside: since the "medicine" is very pure water it will do you no harm

    Scientific Medicine: We've tested this extensively and people get better when they take this medicine
    Upside: You get better
    Downside: None

    Reset X = Reboot window
    C-A-F1 = Open Command Prompt (but you can't)

    In windows if the GUI becomes unresponsive your options are wait or reboot

    In Unix/Linux you can always get to a command line and kill the offending process - and then everything else will continue
    Or you can restart X - and yes it will kill all your desktop apps but the services will continue ...

    Linux on the desktop is not universal because - It does not come with the PC, and it does not run [insert popular app here]

    Tandy TRS-80 100 20 Hours Battery life : Simply because it did not waste power, it just did what you needed ....Word Processing and Spreadsheet .... ..from 4 AA Batteries ...

    Now we have a laptop that does the same with the latest battery technology and storage technology, but it plays music as well ....?!

    FOSS project - We're busy go away ...

    Fedora - We have a problem we're sorting it out, we'll let you know when we know, the Server is Red Hat's and they have the same problem so they are dealing with it ....

    Looks fair enough to me ....
