  1. Re:Plenty of part-timers are in unions on Apple Store Employee Attempts To Form Union · · Score: 1

Today's unions have been known to bankrupt companies once they get on site. I have seen it myself.

I would be interested in seeing an example. I hear people suggest this to have happened, but I have yet to see documented evidence supporting the claim. Many people like to look to the union as an all-purpose boogeyman to blame for all the world's problems, and your statement is a classic example of that.

If you can provide an example to backup your statement, I would love to see it. The very notion of a union having that kind of power in the USA in the current decade - or any of the two prior - counters the experiences I have been through in unionized jobs myself.

  3. Retail union? Not likely on Apple Store Employee Attempts To Form Union · · Score: 1

We all know that retail in this country - especially the kind in brick and mortar locations (or glass cubes if you're Apple) - is dying a horrible death. The overlords of retail will undoubtedly use that as an excuse to dismiss any employees who are caught trying to organize. Retail is a no-win job opportunity, the only way for an employee to do better is to get out of the game.

  4. Plenty of part-timers are in unions on Apple Store Employee Attempts To Form Union · · Score: 1

Since when do part timers even get to talk about unions in the first place?

There are plenty of unions around the country that include part-time employees. Grocery stores in particular come to mind as having part-time union employees.

Furthermore, you can 'unionize' all you want but the company you work for doesn't have to listen to you, or continue your employment.

True, but the employees, if they act collectively, can take action to bring more attention to their complaints. If one employee walks out and pickets in front of the store, they won't get much attention. But if every employee from every store in the area walks out simultaneously to picket about their low wages, lack of benefits, and general abuse as retail slaves, they will bring attention. Sure, Apple could fire them all and replace them in this economy but eventually the consumers would take note of it as well.

While unions have exceedingly little power now in comparison to decades past, they are not completely without relevance. And in some sectors there would likely be more union presence were it not for the fact that the employers take openly anti-union stances which makes it hard to gather momentum.

If you look at the Nintendo website you can see that the new system will also support the old Wii motes (and Wii motes with motion plus). You would likely use those for the more active (sports) games, and the new controllers for the games that are more similar to what is played on other consoles currently.

This is not the way we should select who our new doctors will be. We are screening for automatons when we should be screening for thinkers. Cheaters like this are exactly what the MCAT is pretty well looking for - people who will do just the right amount of work to pass the test, without bothering to comprehend the information that it is supposed to be testing people on.

sticking another runway on an airport is relatively cheap in comparison and guaranteed to make a good return.

I don't think I would say guaranteed. Maybe at really large, really busy airports you have a good chance. But some of the smaller spoke airports have scarcely used runways already - averaging 1 take-off/landing per hour or less in any 24 hour period - and adding another wouldn't really change that.

Although on top of that, there are busy airports (I'm thinking EWR in particular here) that have runways that are scarcely used depending on the prevailing wind / weather conditions. I was once stuck in Newark overnight because high winds kept canceling my EmbraerJet flight; eventually they rescheduled me on a turboprop (to a different destination airport, but close enough) so I could at least get home before the end of all time.

If you want to travel in comfort with wifi and in-seat power without it costing the earth then high speed rail is the answer.

It's too bad that doesn't exist in the US for most of us. I would love to be able to take a high speed train to where I fly most often, but instead my only rail option is AmTrak, which would take even longer than flying.

On top of that, the rail system here is also hub-and-spoke, so for a lot of journeys you end up connecting somewhere and changing trains as well. That part, I'm not sure there is a solution for, but I thought I'd point it out.
