    The shuttle headed for NYC is supposed to sit on the pier next to the Intrepid currently occupied by a Concorde. I haven't seen yet what is supposed to happen to the Concorde... I would consider flying out to NYC to see those two aircraft in the same museum.

    It sounds to me that you were doing consulting for physicians in private practice. By my experience they are egotists to a much larger degree that those associated directly with hospitals. I attribute this in part to the dilbert factor that plays in when a physician pursues private practice - now they are business managers as well as physicians. By my experience most physicians who work primarily at or with hospitals are much better grounded (especially teaching or research hospitals).

    On a related observation I have rarely seen the physicians with doctoral experience (as in the MD/PhD doctors who have actually done doctoral research) in private practice. They almost invariably stay with a hospital, regardless of whether or not they want to continue with research or teaching.

    I used to provide tech support for doctors offices and hospitals and I can tell you for a fact that their computer security ranges from "bad" to "OMFG!!".

    That happens for several reasons:

    • The software they use as part of their work requires admin access (bad vendor programming)
    • The hardware they need to access requires admin access (more bad vendor programming)
    • They consider needing an additional password for admin function to be "too inconvenient" (bad user education)
    • They didn't need to do it when they used 3.x/NT/98/etc ... why should they need it now? (also bad user education)
    • They were told that their anti* software would protect them, even without ever updating it - or anything else (bad vendors meeting up with badly educated users)

    Toyota isn't doing very well as a company - first the unexplained acceleration issues, followed by plenty of other recalls, and now the earthquakes. Their stocks have taken a serious hit, I suspect they are starting to show up on other companies' lists for acquisition.

    I for one expect that the most likely suitor will be none other than Sony. Laugh at it now, but you won't be laughing when Toyotas all have memory stick slots in the seat to remember the shape of the driver's ass...

    Wii has a web browser with Flash 7, it's called the "Internet Channel".

    I use that channel fairly often, but I always figured with that ancient version of flash it would never be able to browse youtube or anything else that needed flash. Considering Flash people trash all over version 9 as ancient, version 7 mush be positively prehistoric - hence I've not bothered to try to use it for anything.

    I don't know about your situation, but I've steamed Netflix movies that were over an hour long on my Wii with no trouble.

    My wii tends to chortle and gag on standard def Youtube videos that run more than 5 minutes

    How are you watching youtube videos on the Wii? Are you using playon?

    I for one would love to see a Wii with 1080p output and a better web browser. Although really even upconverting to 720p would be a substantial improvement; right now you have to buy an additional cable just to get it all the way up to 480p.

    With reasonable expectations an upgraded Wii should be possible that could potentially squash interest in the Kinect and PS3 move. Nintendo actually has quite a bit to work with, they just need to decide how to use it.

    A PhD project should be - at the least - based on funded research of a PI. It should also be vetted by a committee to ensure it is of adequate caliber for the degree. The results should be tracked and reviewed along the way, and presented in a relevant framework.

    If the student finishes and cannot place their work in a relevant context, or has work that has no relevant context, then the people who were supposed to have advised that student have failed. There are plenty of post-doc opportunities available right now for qualified PhDs.

    On the other hand, going from post-doc to junior faculty (if that is what the individual wants) is a different challenge.

    At least, that is what I tell myself as I am looking at starting the 7th year of my PhD.

    Although really, anyone who finishes a biological PhD and can't find a job outside of academia either made a very questionable decision on what exactly to study, or isn't trying very hard. When the US economy was overall tanking, many bioscience companies were - and still are - doing quite well. A former colleague of mine (PhD from the lab I am currently in) had no trouble getting the job he wanted in industry when he finished here, and that is not the least bit unusual in the area I am in.

    That used to be worse.

    It used to be that texting while driving was one of the biggest threats on the road; people distracted by their stupid text messages and not watching where they are going.

    Now we have phones that can check facebook crap anywhere they have a cell phone signal. It was bad enough when messages were just text, now people are getting all the pictures, movies, and whatever other crap is sent through there on their phones as well; and of course OMG they couldn't survive without checking to see what their BFF had for breakfast while driving!

    Sorry, I neglected to mention that I looked it up right after reading your message about it. Maybe my good friend will come over now and claim that I can't use wikipedia, either... :)

    For my own amusement I then checked to see if conservapedia had an entry for it; what I surprise when one of the returns from a search for "billy beer" was an entry called "liberal hate speech".

    Congratulations, you can do basic math. If you thought it out a little more, you would realize the correct conclusion then is that an academic researcher averages negative 4 hours of sleep per day.

    Now if we could get English Top Gear in Canada on one of the channels that aren't in the added price category that would be great.

    If it makes you feel any better I have to pay extra in the US to get BBC America, which is the only way I can watch the UK version of Top Gear. And for that matter we still have never seen any of the episodes with the Black Stig...

    You don't get to have a show that gives opinions about products and then say those products broke when they didn't break, no matter how much "fun" you're having.

    However, Top Gear doesn't sell itself as a source for information. Hell for a while BBC America was comparing it to Jackass in their own commercials. I'm pretty sure there aren't many people who make purchasing or lifestyle decisions based on Jackass, so why should a niche car manufacturer be worried about people making purchasing or lifestyle decisions based on Top Gear? The likelihood that anyone who watches Top Gear without realizing it is for entertainment purposes would have the money for a Tesla Roadster is almost certainly zero.

    And you do realize that none of the main hosts actually have any qualifications to be automotive testers, right? Clarkson is an experienced journalist who barely knows how to use a ratchet. May has a degree in music who needed almost an hour to change plugs and oil on a rear-mounted V8, and is also known as "Captain Slow". Hamster was a radio host and is so short he almost needs pedal extensions to drive a Porsche. Really you'd probably be almost as wise to take dental advice from them as to take car purchasing advice.

    No shit. They review cars that aren't even and never will be in production, compare/contrast £135,000 sports cars, and then go plow snow in Norway on a combine for fun. If you're taking this shit seriously you are the biggest buffoon.... in the woooorld.

    That said, I love watching Top Gear. My DVR usually has at least 6 recorded episodes on it at any given time. For me it may be the single most entertaining show on TV. But I sure as hell wouldn't buy (or pass on) a car simply on what they say about it. I have enjoyed the hell out of cars that they hate; and may never get a chance to drive most of the cars they love.

    Tell that to all the people who decline to buy a Tesla because of what they saw on Top Gear...

    Very few Top Gear viewers have that much disposable income, desire for an all-electric two-seater, and would accept without question what they saw on Top Gear. After all, the Tesla Roadster is a very unique car on today's market; if you wanted one and then changed your mind you would not be able to get a comparable vehicle from Toyota, Ford, Honda, etc ... Or even any of the premium brands for that matter because there is no other two-seater all-electric roadster for sale in the US today.
