The insurance industry has owned Washington for some time now. Naturally they would be able to get away with this kind of invasion of privacy with zero backlash. In 2010 the insurance industry started cashing in on their investment by pushing through the ACA bill, but that is only the start of it.
The overwhelming majority of CSci graduates that I have known started undergrad by learning Scheme. IIRC that language was actually built for the purpose of teaching the fundamentals of programming. Why was it replaced (beyond the fact that hardly anyone in the real world uses it)?
I'm just impressed that neither Bill Gates nor Mark Zuckerberg were included. Most people who don't understand programming include one - or both - of them when building a list of "top programmers" even though neither are particularly outstanding programmers.
The model E looks awful in comparison to what we've seen from Tesla so far. The Roadster, the S, and the X are all great looking cars. The E looks like it was co-designed by Nissan or Kia. If they shortened the E by around a foot by lowering the roof line it would look much better.
I do like the idea of finally seeing a RWD sedan for $30k or less for sale in this country again, though. The big 3 have been completely ignoring this market for a long time and the Asian car makers have basically never even acted as though it ever existed.
The summary should have mentioned that he died of coronary artery disease, not of radiation exposure. The accident was terrible, sure, but the summary has led some to believe that he died of radiation exposure - which is terrible in a different way.
The wikipedia entry suggests he likely lives in or near Atlanta. We saw a while back that murder is legal in nearby Florida, and now Georgia just passed a "carry wherever the hell you want" bill into law. If he doesn't want to be shot for being a perceived threat he might want to consider living somewhere else.
Yes, I know that slashdot's conservative majority will moderate this down because they don't like the truth. They can do their worst, the moderation of this comment won't move my karma.
I just looked at it again and realized that I missed that button (a text link in my version of FF) entirely. When you mentioned it as a button I was thinking of the youtube button of the same function (which is often something of a random gibberish generator).
Can they also put a switch in this to make Office usable? I can't stand that fucking ribbon interface that makes everything I used to do the most often 5 times more difficult.
You'll really like Windows 8, then, because the ribbon is implemented for File Explorer and the Common Dialogs, too.
Well, as long as they don't force it into the command prompt somehow, I will still have some hope of doing useful work in spite of having windows installed.
On a different matter, did you just add me to your foes list today after reading my rant about how badly the ribbon interface sucks? I don't recall seeing you on my freaks list before today.
There's a Hide/Show transcript button just below the video.
That is not particularly useful, though. The Hide/Show transcript button displays the transcript in real-time, with the video. I can't search the text of it, and I can't go through it more quickly with my own eyes than the speed that the people in the video are speaking.
In other words, it is mostly a waste of time. It takes the same amount of time to watch a video with transcript as it does without.
Would be to put it all in youtube videos, right? WRONG.
Sure, videos have their purpose but just give me a damned transcript. I can read a transcript in much less time than it takes to watch some old guy babble, and I can search the text of it as well.
Or just switch to Open Office or other derivatives.
That is exactly what I did. Unfortunately every once in a while one of my colleagues will send me a document (usually a power point presentation) that won't open in anything other than the newest version of office (and sometimes only the newest version on the same platform as their, to boot). They then get to listen to me cursing office for some time while I try to read their document.
Can they also put a switch in this to make Office usable? I can't stand that fucking ribbon interface that makes everything I used to do the most often 5 times more difficult.
First, I agree that the data should have been free. I even agree that the investigation into him seemed to be heavy handed.
However, Schwartz made an odd and poor choice in getting to the data. He could have downloaded the data from his own desk in his own office. Instead he went to the library and entered a wiring closet that was clearly not supposed to be open to the public. If he wanted to further his cause, this was a poor choice.
Some sensors to warn the dumbass wearing the headphones (with volume at 11, naturally) that they are about to walk into something (say, a wall, a manhole cover, a train, a taxi, etc) might be a good idea.
The political videos that people like to link to from here often praise the past, and demonize the present. While they leave me wishing I could have my time back I would love to know if the comptuers could recognize time as moving forward.
(That said, as they are mostly political speeches with no significant moving object the identification could be done by speech pattern recognition)
$100 at one shot is a big pile of money to a lot of people. If I had to pay an additional $100 tax tonight I would be panicking. But $100 spread over the course of a year is almost a rounding error for most people who can afford to drive.
I don't even notice when gas changes by $.12 per gallon any more. The change in gas prices does not change my need to buy it. Not that I would rather not spend that much, but $.12 per gallon on a 15 gallon tank is only $1.80. Considering I pay $3.50 - $4 per gallon, that is roughly the cost of half a gallon or less. I won't notice it. Even if I fill up every week, $1.80 * 52 weeks is only $93.60 over the course of a year which still is not a large pile of money. If I drank coffee I would probably spend that much on coffee in a month or less.
Tue, but that doesn't mean you cannot use it securely.
It can mount a path and modify anything your user can modify.
True, but it doesn't mount much of anything by default. If you mount your entire hard drive at startup in dosbox you're an idiot and deserve what you get.
I recall back when the XBox 360 and PS3 were all the rage on the market someone pointed out how absurdly power hungry they were (particularly in comparison to the Wii, which used less power while running than the PS3 used while sleeping). With the newest consoles from Sony and Microsoft out, and their respective camps declaring those to be the greatest thing since air itself, it would be interesting to know how they compare for wattage against a cable box. Being as many dedicated gamers don't want to ever turn their boxes off, I would expect they are wasting more power than most cable boxes.
If we take an objective look at the matter, there actually is a good reason to give extra scrutiny to the tea party applications, as well as applications from many other political groups. The tea party is a group that openly advocates for people to do everything they can to get out of paying taxes; including cases where tea party members advise people to not send in any forms to the IRS at all.
And what is the job of the IRS? In case you have forgotten, they are tasked with collecting taxes. If someone is not paying taxes, the IRS is responsible to do everything within their powers to collect those owed taxes.
This is no different from the DEA paying extra attention to NORML.
I know that slashdot has taken a very conservative lean in the past ~10 years. But this nonsense is just silly. Furthermore one thing it most definitely is not is technology related.

Thank you! I must have hit the wrong button, or perhaps it doesn't work correctly on my browser.

That was one that people literally bought for the advertisements. Of course, we don't need those advertisements any more, either.

I would run it in a dosbox or VM for a dollar.

I misread your post; apologies.
Accepted. I know political discussions here can get heated at times.
Why do you think that post was anonymous? There is a reason.
