I watched some crazy mailman ballin down the street the other day, mail just flying out of his jeep doing burnouts and stuff. It was hilarious, but I was like, man if only they had GPS tracking on that they could have a chance of retrieving the actual mail from whatever gutter that crap ended up in.
gas + water + electricity + trash removal for me adds up to a total of about $80 USD a month. CableTV+roadrunner has increased to just under $100!! Thats pretty much the only option for me in my area unless I go with a crappy dialup. I decided to just use the internet connection at my parents house or at work (where I'm at now) when I need something because I just can't afford it anymore, and I've turned in my modem last weekend. I'm already going through withdrawal, but just like my other habit (cigarrettes), the cost is what is killing me, not the habit itself.
You're nicely trying to avoid the point. Thats horsepuckey. Your point keeps changing.
Many people who download a copyrighted song from KaZaA are doing so to avoid paying for it. Having these songs available for download enables this behavior AND INFRINGES UPON THE COPYRIGHT.
I never argued that copying materials without permission is not copyright infringement. I argued your claim that copyright is equal to theft, which seemed to be your point before you changed it. Loitering does not result in somebody obtaining a product without paying for it. I never said loitering is identical to copyright infringement. I only used that analogy in regard to potential loss of sales.
A bunch of people are hanging out in front of the mall and cause a loss of sales because customers don't want to go inside with all the people. Thats called loitering. Should loitering be considered theft also because it has the potential to cause a loss in sales? No. Thats why there are separate laws for things like infringement and theft. Neither infringement, nor loitering can be considered theft because no one was deprived of something tangible. Potential sales is not tangible. Should these things be taken into account when determining appropriate punishment for those crimes? Of course. Should this reclassify them as theft? Absolutely not.
What the hell planet are you living on? Earth. You? There's a difference between competition and getting something for free. And neither competing nor recieving free things are felonies.
Part of the reason that their "crappy music" isn't selling is because people are downloading it for free online. Can you offer proof of that?
So making good independent music should be a felony too, since it also could cause many pontential sales losses. I think making boritos can also be considered a felony since they could lead to obesity which would make the artists fat and ugly and possibly lead to potential sales losses. I'm sure there are other possible things that could lead to potential sales losses, but the truth of it is.. most of it comes from their own crappy music just not selling. I have bought a lot of CDs lately but only maybe one from a major label. They just aren't putting anything good out.
I'd agree, but each time that someone downloads a track from a CD, and this prevents them from later buying the rest of the CD, this is theft.
I downloaded some Thrice tracks before because I couldn't wait until I recieved the CD to hear the songs, but I still went out and bought the CD. I ust recently preordered thier new one even though there will surely be mp3s of it around I want to show my support. Downloading the songs did not prevent me from doing anything.
And by the way, your not helping to stop the squabble. So its not theft, lets just call it a "form of theft". What the hell does that mean? It either is or it isn't. Wether it is or isn't is really none of my concern because I buy the CDs anyway. Why do I even care what you slashdotters think? I don't. I'm just bored, and I'm tired of reading nonsense because there is enough of it at my job.
If someone from earthlink emails someone else from earthlink, how would challenge response handled then? Do they make all mail that is sent returnable without challenge responses, and if so is this a temporary rule or are the addresses of all mail you send permanently whitelisted?
If the challenge response triggers a mail daemon reply, is it filtered or do you get flooded with those replies caused by all the spammers with forged addresses? If they are filtered, how do you know when mail you send doesn't go through without the use of message reciepts since mailer daemon replies are all different.
If I mass email tons of earthlink addresses with a forge from address, would it mailbomb the fake address, or do they have flood protection to prevent this?

I know its a joke (may as well throw both and go out with a bigger bang). Imagine for a second though, that the kook who grenaded officers in the tents had access to nuke grenades.
I read that Atlanteans modifying the earths weather through the use of magnetic or gravitational control. The controlling device's misuse threw the earth off its rotation, causing widespread destruction. Some of the Indians (mayans maybe?) had documented in their drawings of people narrowly escaping that destruction by leaving earth on ~flying turtle shells~.
Ok, for the numerous comments about tube sounding better than solid state and simulated stuff not sounding as good as the real thing. Those people are all 100% correct. There is no way anyone can reproduce this stuff exactly, but they have done a super job at putting it together and the bottom line is... The individual analog effects will sound a little better yeah, but the advantage of the line 6 would be that you can have the full range of all of these effects at your feet as someone else said, without spending a fortune. And they sound "good enough" for a lot of people. It is still a fair cost involved though. There is also a conveniency factor that they have. The same theories I guess apply to game system emulators. All the systems in one. Is the real game system better, heck yeah but can you play playstation on your SNES? I guess it comes down to your music style and what you consider to be quality. You won't go buy a single digital effect because that wouldn't usually make sense. Individual analog effects just sound more realistic. I have made analog recordings sound good in a minimal amount of time and digital ones sound like crap though because of the ease of use factor in devices are a HUGE issue (at least for me). Line 6 devices have one big thing going for them for what complex things they do. They are incredibly simple to operate. Their stomp boxes use knobs instead of pages of LCD menus and stuff that you forget how to use by the time you need to change them. In comparison to many similar devices, I think they are way ahead in ease of use. Some musicians do even mix the directbox style sound with the line sound to create new sounds. For example the bassist for Sonic Youth if I recall correctly, used a channel of direct sound and another channel connected to a mic for an amp, and blended the two. You can do a lot with the digital stuff if you put your mind to it.
I think those models come equipped with a CD burner instead, which I guess means that they are not meant to be used in conjunction with a computer. Sure you may want to, but there are other options out there and they are targeting a specific need. All the digital recorders have some features that are left out or added because they are intended to be used in a certain way I guess. Take the BOSS 8 track digital for example (I think its model BR-432). It is in the same class as the fostex I purchased, but it comes with drum machine presets in it. That is definitely targeted toward some goob sitting around in his bedroom. It is also not stereo which is something many people, (drummers especially come to mind) detest. There are other things I don't like about it, but its not that it is crap. I have a friend that loves his. Its just that it has a different target market I suppose.
My guitarist for my favorite band (Thrice) uses Line 6 modelers. They are definitely awesome, and I've demoed a line 6 amp in the shop and it is well worth your money. They are still kind of expensive for someone like me though. But then again, you get what you pay for. For musicians on a budget, I think the drastically cheaper multitrack digital recorders on the market now are much bigger news. I just put in an order for a Fostex MR8 last night. Its a digital multitrack recorder that meets my needs for around $300. I've been doing a lot of feature comparing and review reading and stuff and it is cheaper than some of the others but it is better. Plus it uses compact flash memory instead of some buddy proprietery storage. It has a USB for doing.wav outs. etc.
As if there aren't easier ways to find us, seriously. They probably already have obs floating all over the place and are pumping out reavers and goons. Who cares. Terran owns. We just need to stop our infighting and quit turtling.
There has been remailers that support newsgroup posting for a long time now. Polling scripts are very simple to create.
Isn't this is what anonymous remailers are for?

Now that you understand, perhaps you can explain something that the others can't. What exactly is stolen when you download music?
What the hell planet are you living on?
