I got your message Blizzard, and frankly I don't care what you have to say about digital rights management. You damn fringe world software companies are all alike, don't know where your loyalties lie. Y'all have a real good day now, y'hear?
I'm building new lower power rigs for gaming. I'm doing this for the same reason I'm buying those new funky light bulbs. Because energy costs are going up. Screw the environment, and I hope it burns with all of you in it. I just want to save money to buy more bullets. Here is my wishlist because I think I can do fine already. Anyone who doesn't like it can kiss my green ass:
ASUS M3N78-EM (hybrid SLI, express gate, DDR2)
The AMD 5050e 2.6GHz dual core - 45 watts for your ass
Western Digital caviar green drive idle power doesn't suck
A good nvidia card, because compromising on this doesn't result in a gaming rig.
Look at guides for musicians and writers for breaking writers block, and the same rules apply. For me it is a change of scenery. Sometimes, I will go sit in the car in the parking lot.
"Microsoft is no different, or annoying and heartless than the cell phone companies or how AT&T was"
You are still wondering why people would be hateful of this? I thought you explained pretty well.
"Bill Gates smoothly made sure his company won the monopoly, but even without the man, a different software company would have won it."
Maybe another company would not have gone to such extremes of monopoly abuse? Maybe another company could spend 5 years with their resources working on an operating system that wasn't a piece, but no you seem rather sure of your alternate future. I don't agree with his redistribution of most of the planet's wealth. I would have preferred to turn the moon into a death star and declare myself lord emperor. Being dark side requires a much greater commitment than Gates was willing to offer.
Programs & Features isn't as annoying as when Find was changed to Search in the start menu. Someone please justify breaking consistency for that crap! I understand in ME when they combined control panel components and made it Sounds AND multimedia, but what was the freaking justification for renaming it to Sounds and Audio Devices? How about telling someone to OK something. Oh wait, I don't have an OK button, I have a yes button or a go button or some other ridiculous BS. The list goes on for me not just with Windows, but with Windows software.. The issue I have is not that Microsoft and vendors decide to change conventions, but it seems that they just seem to change things sometimes just to spite people who have to support it and deal with the inconsistencies. Honestly, I think this is the point the real Microsoft development team needs to come in dressed up like counterstrike, just shoot everybody and take command.
This is actually a message from technical support in India. The SFC stands for system file checker and the other marks are not binary, but rather slashes to indicate fragmentation of the file system. The hex numbers are just fatal exception error codes.
We, the undersigned Members of Congress, hereby request the Electoral Assistance Division of the United Nations Department of Political Affairs to send election observers to monitor the presidential election in the United States scheduled for November 2, 2004. We are deeply concerned that the right of U.S. citizens to vote in free and fair elections is again in jeopardy."
Some games don't support or in some cases won't even install with >= DX6. I've also had the odd occasion where a win9x box would have been "convenient" since I would not have had to run it under the confines of a VM.
I never heard of port knocking before and this program looks awesome. I used a similar procedure to this several years ago I think. I had set up a procmail recipe to accept a passphrase which I rotated daily and would print and bring with me to work each day. When the event was triggered it would enable a firewall rule that allowed connections to my webmin port from my IP at work. If no connection was established within x amount of time then the rule would turn off. If successfully logging into webmin within that time frame then it would hit the max of one user allowed to connect. I would terminate the webmin service on exit to also prevent tailgaters. The goofy thing is I went through all that just to keep a secure todo list on my home computer because my corporate phone had a lame one. In retrospect I think it was maybe overkill.
Space-borne observatories will of course allow us the capability of detecting incoming planet killers obscured from our earthly perspective. IMHO it would be vastly easier to harvest, destroy, repel, or do just about anything with smaller objects than it would be to track them.
I invented my own OS, which I call F.U. (Frackin Unix). My OS has only one bug (Bug #1 - Operating System Not found). Clearly my OS is more superior than any competitors due to its extremely low number of bug reports.
This should prepare him for the real world where violation of software (i.e. browser) standards can result in severe penalties. In my environment for example, Internet Explorer is required because it is bundled with the OS and patching is already managed through our existing windows patching infrastructure. Yes, it is possible to manage the patching of firefox, but for the deployment team to take on that task you are going to have a fun time convincing management of a business case for a change when all in-house web apps targeted for IE don't render properly in Firefox, and when they already have a "browser that works", and with more critical tasks to focus on. Firefox is more secure for general websurfing, but since you are supposed to be working instead of surfing anyway that doesn't make a good argument. Nevertheless, zealots and power users who don't see the big picture will go off occassionally so you just have to give them a dose of reality which is probably what this kid needs more than a punishment. Unfortunately people are usually more concerned with punishing people than educating them, often because they are less than capable educators.
"In the latest survey of revenue leakage over the last 12 months to the regional pay-TV industry, conducted by the Cable & Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia (CASBAA) and Standard Chartered Bank, the losses are conservatively estimated to stand at US$1.54 billion, as compared to US$1.13 billion in 2006." - Source
These figures are of course a survey of potential revenues lost. I was being sarcastic when I said actual cost because I know it is impossible to determine an "actual" loss. Regardless, I would be interested to hear someone from the industry on how these benefits of piracy have influenced these fudge figures.
Since piracy statistics are being used to help with marketing and increase profits, is this a measureable reduction to the actual cost piracy has on the industry?
Great... How long before someone creates genetically modified flying fish that can see in ulraviolet and they hunt down all our poor glowing kittens in a primal bloodlust! No thanks. In fact, I'd rather have a cat that emits powerful gamma ray bursts or something so it could at least take out the neighbors cat.
I've spent around 10 years on various helpdesks so I am inclined to comment on these supposed types.
The know-it-all: Isn't that big a deal because usually they are quick to point out how much they know making it easy to anticipate common know-it-all roadblocks like getting tied up on a task for 10 minutes because they disagree with you. Many people who seem to be know-it-alls are actually putting up a defense shield because of insecurity. Don't make it worse by also being a know-it-all.
The know nothing: This is a pretty large portion of the population, so if you can't handle supporting most people then you need to either work on it or consider a career change. Attitude makes a big difference. Please keep in mind that these people often feel vulnerable when calling for support so showing extra consideration goes a long way. Don't patronize people or be a jerk or surprise, people will treat you like a jerk.
Mr. Entitlement: This is a bit sexist. It should be Mr. or Mrs. entitlement since I feel there are just as many women in a position of power who have this attitude. Treat these people the same way you do any jerk. Suck it up and just deal with it whimp. Sometimes if you are really really nice and act like they don't phase you it really makes these people agitated which can be entertaining. Keep in mind that a lot of times people just get pissed of at the situation or because someone else is pissed at them or whatever so you can't go wrong with just being nice and dealing with the issue.
The finger pointer: As long as you have experience dodging bullets then this should not be an issue. In a corporation there tends to be a lot of these and fewer people actually being productive so it helps to have experience working for a big evil global mega corporation with poor efficiency.
The twentysomething whiz kid: The most important thing is not to get carried away by these people because they can often be very confident and persuasive and lead you in the completely wrong direction. Call control is very important.
One really tough one I think they really left out was what I call the keyboard commando. A lot of times people just can't resist pressing buttons and clicking stuff. It is like they just can't help themselves from like going off on their own little adventures and trying things. Many times though I have found that the reason why people do this is because they are either insecure and want to fix the problem themselves or they just want to have you around to blame when they break something but otherwise don't even need you or care what you have to say.
I don't have a dream user because I don't dream of users.
Aren't youtubers and myspacers and other trendy sitegoers a predominately younger crowd? Whoever could have imagined that teenagers would be rebellious or have posts that conflict with the establishment, I mean that is just unnatural!

We should take cue from battlestar and pass on the good parts of ourselves but leave out all the bad stuff. We should be able to fit that on a rock.

I'm sure an alleged cyberterrorist named Rajendrasinh Babubaha Makwana will get a swift trial in a U.S. court.

The hard part would be justifying the insane licensing costs for that stuff when there are free methods of accomplishing the same end result.

If it used to make better maps before then I'm sure it could do it again. Pitiful thing is probably just feeling very isolated and abandoned.
