    Witch-hunts werent a protestant thing; they had been going on for thousands of years at that point, including in the early Roman empire.

    Regardless, the reformation DID address some of the worse problems that the church was experiencing, such as simony, indulgences, etc. Without an unelected, life-long office with such power as the pope had, there was far less risk of corruption.

    The user's registry information IS in their profile folder, inside of "ntuser.dat". Since Vista / 7, user-level attempts to write to program files are redirected to somewhere in AppData.

    So yes, really everything is in the user's folder.

    Good news for you! Windows 7 reinstall disks can all be downloaded direct from microsoft, and apparently they will work just fine with OEM keys. It looks like they got rid of the distinction between media and key types, so I am assuming a retail key will also work with these.

    The article has the 5 links to the MS-hosted isos. They also have a tool which will let you change one iso into another.

    I didn't click on "punch the monkey" ads, blindly click through installers which would install 5,000 toolbars in my web browser, click on random emails, or install software from that nice russian/nigerian person in the email.

    Neither do any of the people I know / work with / for who have ever gotten a virus. None of those are, in fact, how viruses are primarily distributed these days.

    The only open-source AV I am aware of-- ClamAV-- lacks real time scanning, and is generally awful. The version that supports real time scanning-- MoonSecure-- is apparently very much alpha, and has a high risk of ruining your machine.

    Ill take the closed-source Security Essentials, thanks.

    Heck even the best virus removal tools out there-- Kaspersky's tools, Combofix, GMER-- are closed source.

    Just because a person isn't paid entirely and directly by the government doesn't mean they don't owe the public a service. By becoming a doctor, one assumes the mantle of caretaker of the health of those around them. If someone doesn't want that responsibility, then they can choose some other profession which doesn't have such a weight upon it.

    These are new rules youre making up. Im not sure that our government does or ever has agreed with this; I cant recall an instance where a doctor was compelled to perform a non-lifesaving procedure, and Im willing to bet they could refuse to perform even a life-saving one under certain circumstances (good samaritan and neglect laws aside).

    Doesn't that imply that one must treat all men equally in public?

    The Bill of Rights and Constitution say that the government must treat everyone equally, but the 1st amendment for example seems to defend my right to be a bigoted jerk if I so desire.

    Its to prevent the Uzbekistanians from invading, my neighbor from shooting me, and Joe from stealing my car. Thats the basic function of the government, not to make sure my feelings arent hurt. Theres other stuff above and beyond that, but at its core the government isnt about telling me how to live my life, its about letting me live it.

    Your suggestion doesnt realyl say where the money comes from to provide access, nor does it say what bar is set before you get that access. Who is paying the media to provide this platform? Tell me youre not about to compel them to provide a service for free.

    And what if Joe CEO wants to print his own 50,000 flyers for Bill Democrat? Is that now illegal?

    Really? You believe that the government shouldn't step in to ensure fairness when a free-market isn't available?

    The government should never be able to compel a sale or servicing of a customer, except in incredibly rare and dire circumstances. Fighting Jim Crow laws in the South was noble, and I think might be one of the few examples where such laws are permissible, but even then comes dangerously close to the line of "not the government's role" (it is, unfortunately, essential that people have the freedom to be bigots).

    Actually, I usually argue that the definitions of steal and pirate are irrelevant, and people arguing about it usually are trying to justify their own selfish desires.

    Shill has a pretty specific meaning, and if youre not getting paid, youre just a fanboy. Shill implies that youre a paid goon of some faceless corp whose role is to drum up support for that corp.

    That sounds great in theory, but what if I want to spend my money on advertising? What if I want to get on camera, tell the public that Im Bill Gates, and I support Joe Blow for president? You going to have congress create a law that outlaws that, and hope it is never expanded to include other types of speech?

    Joe CEO of MegaCorp wants to express his support of Candidate Bill Democrat He has written to Bill, indicating how he is mostly in line with Bills values, but thinks Bill needs to pay more attention to the needs of large corporations by reducing red tape. He has indicated that he has a desire to sponsor a campaign to get Bill elected.

    Now tell me, is Joe not a person? Can you fix the lobbying "problem" without severely curtailing Joes rights simply because he happens to be successful?

    We already have laws which limit the amount of money a single individual can contribute (which-- while I recognize has positive merit, still makes me uneasy because of the principle of telling people what they can do with their money); do you have a suggestion which would better address the issue?

    What security concerns? Arent NTFS ACLs more granular than most anything a stock linux install can use? Or are you suggesting there is a way to circumvent those ACLs?

    Didnt DDO and LOTRO both go free2play, and then immediately have increased revenues? Isnt League of Legends F2P, and a pretty big success?

    Lobbying is basically people banding together and expressing their opinion with promises of campaign money. Im not sure how you intend to get rid of that without curtailing people's right to vote, or to speech, or to the press.
