    What if they claimed not to be responsible because it was the work of the devil?

    Or if he tried a shotgun lawsuit against the Catholics, Baptists, Unitarians, Muslims, etc? In that case none of the defendants would risk trying to get out of the case, because whoever's god was responsible is the true religion.

    Ah, but how do you value jail time? If I had $40,000, I'd gladly pay it to expunge my criminal record and not spend a few years in prison. Therefore, the certain threat of amassing a criminal record and spending time in jail > $100,000, and a 40% chance of amassing a criminal record and spending time in jail > $40,000.

    I'm not sure how much money I'd spend to avoid jail, but I think it's safe to say that the penalties for bank robbery are of greater value than $40,000.

    Punishment must be less than the crime. Punishment+restitution can be more than the crime.

    So the punishment for stealing $100,000 should be returning the $100,000 plus some other penalties valued, on average, at less than $100,000.

    I'm not sure I agree with the GP, but your argument is really silly.

    Parole. Convicts, with good behavior, are paroled after a certain part of their sentence. So if you give someone 25 years, with good behavior he can be out in 10. Give him 250 years, with good behavior he can be out in 100.

    In China recently a censor let through a tribute to the June 4 martyrs because he didn't realize that was referring to Tianamen Square because he'd never heard of the massacre there. So yes, indoctrination works well on the young and unlearned.

    There will be an increase in people buying monitors and keyboards for home use, but the guts of the system will be laptops. They unplug everything and use the laptop screen and keyboard on the road, then come home to their shiny, shiny peripherals.

    I don't think this will happen--desktops will be cheap enough that people who care about shiny peripherals will just buy both a desktop and a laptop--but the existence of shiny peripherals won't be enough by itself to preserve the desktop.
