  1. Not quite BSOD's, but still worth noting. on Steaming Heap of Quickies · · Score: 1

I've seen several PC's in unlikely places with problems booting up. We were at Frankenmuth in this store, and the person's cash register was an old 486 that needed some TLC in the setup screen. My girlfriend had to hold me back to not push F1 and jump right on to help. The second one we saw was at the Macomb Mall. There is a photo booth there that does a bunch of photo effects to your picture (like making it look like it was hand drawn). One day they must've lost power, because when we went by it, it had the power on screen, and "No Keyboard Found. Press F1 to continue." There was also a wedding gift registry at Hudsons that had a BSOD on it. Unfortunately, no CTRL-ALT-DELETE on the membrane keyboard. :)

  2. Re:What a bunch of horse****.. on Compaq Announces Thin Client Running Linux · · Score: 1

Then it's not a sexy thin client, but an "old stodgy X terminal" and we can't have old buzzords, now can we? :)

  3. Re:Don't buy dreamcast! on Playstation 2 delayed again · · Score: 1

Please DO buy a Dreamcast. I don't like Microsoft either, but I think Sega has a really good product. :) Plus, you can never have too many game consoles. :)

  4. Consistency? on Details About New Trek Series? · · Score: 1

You expect consistency from a show that in it's previous incarnations (fondly referred to as "The Old Series") routinely killed off "The Red Shirt" (Let's put together the away team. Bones, Spock, Checkov, and McDeadGuy, meet me in transporter room three) Kids, it's a television show. Of course the good guys are going to pull something out of their proverbial ass at the last minute. (Oh, wait. I think I can just screw with he plot continuum, and the good guys (that's us) will live to see another day, just like the beginning of the show!) It allows them to syndicate it just like Three's Company, and show the episodes in whatever order they want, so only their hair style shows what season it's in. I'm just waiting for the movie where Jean Luc looses the rent money, and has to pretend he's gay so Admiral Ralph Furley doesn't suspect he's sleeping with Bev Crusher.

  5. GUI's to support? on Delphi for Linux · · Score: 1

Unless there's something other than X Windows, I'm not sure what this statement is referring to.

  6. Radiation? on Techno Bra will alert Authorities · · Score: 1

Ummm, wouldn't the EMF radiation/cancer risk outweigh the benefits of having a bra that notifies the police of when your heart stops? Also, I wonder how comfortable that would be? (Not that I'll ever find out firsthand. :) )

  7. Re:Buy the source license and fix it yourself. on X11AMP changes name to XMMS and gets sponsored · · Score: 1

I paid them... It doesn't work. Next?

  8. 4Front... (Offtopic) on X11AMP changes name to XMMS and gets sponsored · · Score: 1

I wish 4Front would get off their collective arses and get what's already supported working right. I'd like to be able to use Jazz sometime with my AWE64 and external keyboard, please. :)

  9. Nintendo Official Seal on Nintendo shuts down www.snes9x.com · · Score: 1

I don't think it's the ROMS per se that are illegal, but how people are getting them. Ever wonder what the "Official Seal of Approval" is on your Nintendo games? Is it some seal of quality that Nintendo assigns to game packs? Nope. It's the sign that Nintendo got some royalties off of the sale of that cart. That's why Nintendo fought Tengen and Camerica (not sure if this came up on the SNES.) So Big 'N' doesn't make a dime off of your download. I'm sure we'd hear the same thing from Atari for all their emulators, if Atari was in any recognizable form nowadays.

  10. Re:Then they moderate you... on Microsoft starts anti-Linux Group · · Score: 1

Truth is a relative term, and your comment had no relation to the subject at hand.

  11. Trumpetted by Presidential Candidates on US Crypto Export Laws Ruled Unconsitutional · · Score: 1

Especially the Open-source Candidate, Al Gore. :)

  12. Floppy? on Translucent PC Cases · · Score: 1

Where does the floppy go on these beasties? I know there's a slit for the drive, and a button too, but are you going to have to get a special drive to fit in there, much like the drives in the Dell "molded case" machines? I wonder if it'll match a 17" Apple monitor. :)

  13. Fraud? on SCO CEO Calls Red Hat a Fraud · · Score: 1

Who had been selling an inferior Unix for way too much money? I think SCO should have a class action lawsuit filed against it. Granted, anyone allowing people to buy Unix is a Good Thing (TM), but I believe SCO shouldn't take pot shots at people making a buck.

  14. Media One on Television That Watches You · · Score: 1

Actually, as a suburbanite of Detroit, I believe that this is a competing company for the already established cable companies. So in a way this is a good thing (breaks the connection between the established companies and their "utility" standing) but tracking what people watch doesn't settle well with me.

  15. Quick question: on Grateful Dead Productions wants to pull MP3s · · Score: 1

I am not a deadhead, but I'd like to know if the deadabase was trading in live performance recordings, or were they getting mp3s off of live records released by the band? If it was the recordings from the band, then there's the problem, but if it's the live shows from the band, I fail to see how it's any dfferent than someone taking a DAT tape to the show and recording. I thought for a long time that bootlegging Dead shows was permissible from the band. Perhaps they're trying to come up with a new source of revinue since the untimely departure of Jerry Garcia.

  16. Dreamcast can't play old Saturn titles on Sega plans Dreamcast's U.S. debut · · Score: 1

There was a rumour floating around on the lists that they had perfected an emulator disc, and were going to sell it for $25 in Japan. Not sure if that's going to pan out over here, or how subatantiated the rumour is (was?). However, how interested are you going to be if you don't already have a Saturn?

  17. Unfortunately on Gates: "Linux will have Limited Impact" · · Score: 1

Unfortunately, the public sees Bill Gates as a Techno Willy Wonka, and Windows as the Everlasting Gobstopper. People will hang on his every word, even though now he's more of a politician/ambassador for Microsoft rather than the technical wizard. We must educate the public without alienating it. After all, whn people think that Bill Gates spent many sleepless nights coding Windows, Solitaire, and Office, there's definately a problem.

  18. Movie branding on Silicon Graphics rebrands itself as 'SGI' · · Score: 1
I guess this makes Lost In Space a dated movie, then, much in the same way that Atari makes Blade Runner look dated. :)

I agree too... After the Sun logo, the SGI logo was one of the best. Ah well...

  19. New Slogans: on Microsoft demands http://linux.de removes slogan · · Score: 1

Windows: We put the blues in blue screens.

Windows: You didn't want to save that, didja?

Windiws: We're the "un" in unstable.

Windows: Not just pain relief; productivity relief.

Windows: Advertise on our GPF's. Call us to find out how. Seen by millions daily.

Windows: Nothin' says lovin' like a good computer fsckin'

    Microsoft: Did somebody say "Linux"?

  20. Who is laughing at who?? on Microsoft redefines Open Source · · Score: 1

Did they still have the source for this custom written application? I'm sure it wasn't a question of whether Linux could run it, but rather the programmer made an assumption for a Slackware system that was no longer true on the Redhat System.

On a seperate note, I've taken code from repositories, and compiled them for Linux. Old code. Really really old code. Most of it worked (except for the X code that was looking for some screwy Sony sponsored Xaw libraries).

    Draw your own conclusions.

  21. Refund Day on WinCE machines? :) on Ask Slashdot: Handheld Linux, Today? · · Score: 1

Yeah, but how are you going to get the ROM out of the WinCE machine for refund day? :)

  22. Free Speech... (Not Free Beer) on Blender Going Shareware · · Score: 1

According to the site, they're still considering releasing the source when blender hits the 1.8x mark. Also, if NaN goes under, they will automagically turn everything over to the GPL. So they are working towards freeing the source.

  23. No Surprise on Blender Going Shareware · · Score: 1

This hasn't been a surprise, folks. Also, it's my understanding that the only functionality that will be disabled is renderfarming and texture libraries. So, it's still going to be the blender we know and use (and review) but the "advanced" features will be enabled with a key. They've been hinting at this since its initial release.

Also, you should buy the manual. Not only does it describe a pretty cool product, but it's one hell of a graphical book. Very nice.

  24. Totally off subject but... on A Waterproof Rollable Keyboard · · Score: 1

They do... There's this thing Sony and many other companies came up with. It's called a Walkman. :)

  25. Microsoft's chance for Office monopoly on Linux! on MS Office for Linux · · Score: 1

Of course they can also say if they DON'T sell any apps that there's no market on Linux. Vendors flee, and Linux goes the way of being a server only OS.

Broad generalizations, yes, but it might happen.

Honestly, though, I don't think this is all a bad thing. I'm hoping even MS is surprised by this move (if it even comes to fruition)
