Your suggestion is one of the best ideas I have heard for long time. It should have been obvious to anyone that this is a good strategy for driving change, but it is just one of those things that barely elude us. In some form this is going on. The OWS movement is ineffective because of broad demands lobbed at an entire industry. The leaders of the 1% can afford to sit back and wait it out. Did you think of this, or was it developed from another source?
Dude! Speaking of Thinkpads, their screens suck these days. I got a new $1800 i7 Thinkpad recently for a Dean and the screen is almost unusable. If you move out of the optimal view angle even the slightest bit the colors go haywire, any more and you lose "viewability." My five year old T60 blows it out of the water as fa as screen quality.
It is also rather inexpensive to build an array of cheapo lasers hooked to a timing circuit using an IR tracking system to automatically target and flood an aircraft with a blinding laser show. Hell, you may even be able to find a write-up with a simple Google search.
If they launched the whole OS as open source it would be a total bitch slap to Google and the Android platform. I know I would be excited. Hell, I might even turn Apple Fanboi.
Actually no. Having a user -- over the phone -- open a terminal and type apt-get install firefox is much easier. You trying hanging on the phone for an hour with my grandma or aunt and direct them through the damn GUI. Not fun, I have to lay down after I'm done. I have had them both open command lines and run commands, it is much easier than having them navigate control panel apps or the like.
I'm a fan of Windows 7. I'm considered the Windows 7 guru at work (college IT dept), and I have been instrumental in deploying it at the college. However, on my most recent build (personal software/firmware/mobile development machine) I had Windows 7 queued up again in my New Egg wish list while I researched the best hardware and what not. Late in the build I decided to dump the Windows 7 license and use Ubuntu instead. Reflecting on this decision, I realized that cost was a factor (allowed me to get MUCH better hardware for the same price), the fact that Windows 7 Pro lacks certain advanced features available in Enterprise/Ultimate (not willing to pay $60 more over Pro), and the fact that I really do not need Windows anymore; all this led me to forgo Windows as my main OS. This is Dad's machine, but the family PC could also easily go to Linux if I didn't have to use the Pantech USB 3G device to get on the internet (no Linux support).
Another thing I find is that the popularity of Apple is going to put WAY more pressure on Microsoft because people who use those products are OK with ditching Microsoft--Apple is popular with the average user even if they do not own the products. This and the popularity of Android will lead people to also accept Linux as a desktop OS more readily. Microsoft is looking at a perfect storm--Windows and Office relevance is waning fast.
Yes, let's. I'm a butt hair away from wiping Firefox from my life. Bing is junk that must be forced on people. We use Google because it works and always has. There is no reason to use Bing. Google may have some black marks on them but nothing compared to the declining Microsoft and their childish practices. There are some good people that work at Microsoft. Unfortunately they are hemmed in by the over riding crap ass government-like culture of isolated departments and divisions that is Microsoft. For all the good things that have come from Microsoft the same things would have emanated from humans anyway. When it is all said and done Microsoft will be noted as a sad lament in the history of technology--nothing more.
" They don't crash, they don't lock up, " That is an awful broad statement. I just dumped two Mac Books because they wouldn't work right--the damn OS kept crapping out on the updates with no manual update path and there was no support for Java 6 on a 32 bit machine (I did have to restart because of klunnky behavior a few times on top of all that). Total nightmare--unless you just want to watch a movie or browse the internet. I actually wanted to develop software and help people run a business with the damn things. Business==not supported. Certainly not infallible. It is just Unix.
It is motivation 3.0. The academic world has discovered the FACT that people do not create or innovate based on a motivation of profit (financial rewards). They do it because it brings them joy to be a part of something and create things--expressing themselves. Outlined in Daniel Pink's book, Drive; is the concept that you cannot offer financial rewards (carrots) to creative people--it backfires! This has been documented through various scientific and case studies. I think most of us programmers/developers/designers already know this. Much of our problem with management is their assumption that we must be compelled (extrinsically) to work, just like a laborer.
Oh Jesus fucking Christ! I have had many Java apps that start instantly. You are so full of troll shit. My reasonably sized Java application starts very fast, almost instantly. Why in the hell would start up times matter to any user? Oh my god! It took 1.5 seconds longer than I thought it would to start! That's it, I'm shopping for a new app! You dumb shit fucking retard Java envy fucks. I'm so sick of hearing Java bashing on slashdot I could piss myself. On Linux it is instant, on Windows 7 it is instant, on fucking XP it was instant. WTF!? What are you guys running? A 486? Someone brings an awesome platform like Java to the world (yeah, fucking cross platform) and you little bitches can't do anything but bash on the greatest development platform to emerge in the last twenty years. What a bunch of neckbeard, stinky ass, non-producing, fucking shit bag haters. I love C/C++, BASIC, Java, ASM, machine language, Javascript, hell I even like batch files (slight puke in my mouth). Each one fills a purpose. Java has been around for 15 years with no sign of withering because brilliant people recognize it for what it is and use it. Get over it.
Why don't we disband the high schools and put our resources into colleges? It is not hard to study high school level courses on your own and prepare for college. Plenty have done it and everyone is capable. Then let the money flow when they qualify and hit college.
OWS is a train wreck. Leaderless is not a feature, it is a bug.

The US government and municipalities are the biggest owners of Microsoft through their pension funds.
must resist troll.........ahhhh!!!! damnit!!

It costs more to manufacture matte screens. It probably takes several more steps, space, extra energy, and materials to implement.

Except they didn't make it. [pedantry]
Maybe they were terrorists?!
Yeah, but by god we need to start fixing this climate before it is too late.
Jebus chris wuz that englis?
ahh...the pedantry, it is why I come here

No, but the US put a man in power who killed 8 million of his own people, and help repatriate them to boot.
Who owns the moon? How long before someone claims it and we have a war on Earth because of it? Can I buy a piece? I think we should conquer the Moon!

Google is evil? [citation needed]

BUZZER! Wrong. Open an economics book. Don't confuse your debt with the government's.
