  1. Re:Good in some ways... on Microsoft to Force IE7 Update on February 12th · · Score: 1

While that is one reason, I'd say that the most important reason is that almost any code you run comes from one trusted source. With GNU/Linux it's the distributor, with BSD it's ports. With windows, you are supposed to download untrusted programs from all over the net (lets say I need to burn a CD, play videos, games, ect, ect). The odds of getting a virus this way are much higher.

  4. Cruise Control for parenting on Parents To Block Kids From Joining MySpace · · Score: 2, Insightful

You must EDUCATE kids. Hiding them in a bubble solves nothing. It is an insult to their intelligence, and it teaches them falsities about the world. Ratings on media can be a beautiful thing as it can act as a warning sign for parents who may need to sit down and have a talk with their child before injecting them with the media. On the other hand, systems like the V-Chip, or in this case, "banning" children from "myspace", end up with children missing something without the understanding as to why. The perfect way to brew defiant kids who lie is to start by lying to them first. These defiant kids will end up seeking that missing bit, no matter what stops them, completely rejecting important advice at the moment where it is most important.

I'll be the first to admit I have no experience here (neither a parent or a psychologist) but this seems like common sense to me.

If you teach a man to fish, he won't be hungry for the rest of his life. We can give these people food. That's fine. The only problem is we'll need to make another shipment tomorrow, and the next day, and the next. Or, we can attempt to give life to their economy, educate their youth, and hopefully make them able to support themselves someday. Many robber barons of the guilded age (those with money in their pockets) donated things such as libraries instead of just paying everyone's bills. This is what the OLPC project is doing.

5 years is fine. A movie or album will make all the money it is going to make in that time. After that, it should be completely free. Software companies (like microsoft) might not like this, but bah.

Also, I agree, there should be a punishment for using any sort of tactic to try to restrict creativity (DRM, closed standards and systems, patents, ect.)
