    Linux being free would not affect poor college students either way, as everyone buys a computer with an OS already installed. Most people just use whatever their machine came with.

    Fsck iTunes. Amazon's mp3s, in addition to being DRM-free, are all encoded at 256kbps or higher, and none cost more than 99 cents. Many are even 89 cents.

    We get free MS software in the US as well. With my student MSDN account I've gotten the following for free in the last two semesters:

    Visual Studio.net 2003 Professional

    Visual Studio 2005

    Microsoft Expression

    Windows Vista Business

    Windows XP Professional w SP2

    Windows XP Pro

    and some other things I don't recall at the moment.

    It is still easier to double click an .exe in Windows than it is to install from the command line. Also, there are many users out there who would not know how to install software from the terminal. By the way, I should have just said I disagreed in my earlier comment, rather than calling your opinions "ridiculous"; I apologize for that.

    true, I've found instaling apps in Linux to be easier than Windows once you have a binary distribution that is packaged.

    Ridiculous.

    Of course, momentum and installed base helps a lot, but Windows cannot ever compete with free.

    Also ridiculous. Windows, like it or not, is ~ 92% of the OS market.

    Very true. Now I hate the French as much as the next Briton, but I feel the American accusation of cowardice during the Second World War is resting on pretty thin ice.

    The amount of true remorse that a defendant feels and expresses can and should be used when determining sentencing. It's called a 'mitigating circumstance.'

    That is not insightful. "Remorse" after the fact should not affect things at all. You try almost getting killed by a drunk, as my family and I nearly were, then see if you still believe in mitigating circumstance.

    I've been saying the same thing for a while. It's too bad our "legal system" doesn't take drunk driving seriously. Look at all these idiots out there with 10 DUI's. My wife, stepson (5 years old at the time), and I were hit by a drunk a few years ago, and nothing was done to him, he got a few month's house arrest and paid the court a $200 fine.

    My wife is a pro-photographer and takes like, 500+ images per job, and, we had the $3000 dual G5 Mac and Aperature and Aperature yakked and we lost a year of work because Aperature's doesn't generate unique filenames for its images across subdirectories and when you export it overlays them...

    Since then, she's switched to a WinPC and Lightroom, and Lightroom is both stable for her, and reliable and does more and she will never touch a Mac again. The moral of the story is that Adobe Lightroom is the real target, not Aperature... even the feature sets of Lightroom have her not missing her Mac...

    Finally! A story on /. about someone switching to Windows from Mac.

    I LIKE IT that less and less features are tied into the command line. It's a lot easier for me to use a computer via GUI then via obscure command line commands. I run Ubuntu on two different computers at home, 3D acceleration, COMPIZ, WINE, all work extremely well. And I didn't have to use the command line to set any of them up. The average person who uses a computer (Example: My Mother) can now use Ubuntu, because the average person depends on a GUI instead of memorization of a bunch of command line commands. Most people don't CARE what Operating System they are using, as long as it is simple, as long as the UI is friendly. Look at OS X. It's rather user friendly. Linux is heading the same way, while Vista.... well, it's Vista. ;)

    That is just silly. How are OS X or Ubuntu more user friendly than Vista? I know it's popular to bash Vista here, but how is it any harder to use. Is there a more enlightened way to click on icons in those OS'es?
