actually last time warner may be in New York but Aol is still headquartered in Virginia sorry to pick nits but i live in virginia. we southereners are nitpickers:)
marginally succesful? tell that to the japanese that died. financially strapped bands? Osama is loaded and has tons of willing followers ready to die for the cause. I would think it would be tons easier to infect one of those followers with anthrax then smuggle him into New York than it would be to steal a missle. You can't hide a missle under your overcoat. Its a god damn missle! Anthrax you can hide inside yourself and if you can keep yourself from puking on the plane and not dying until you get to LaGuardia you can kill tons of people that will just spread around the world in days.
I'm just glad that someone is thinking about things like this and not ignoring them in favor of the huge threat (sarcasm) from rogue missles.
GW has done a marvelous job of not getting us all killed by our allies yet but he's working hard at it. The entire missle defense idea is lunacy if we follow GWs thinking (or not-thinking). We have a treaty with other nations that says we won't do this. IF we do then we are breaking a treaty. I don't know about you but whenever I break a treaty in Civilization someone attacks my ass. Has GW even played Civilization? Maybe he should. I heard a reporter on NPR the other day say "if the US were to unilaterally abrogate the ABM treaty then in the eyes of the rest of the world the US would be a rogue nation." aint that some shit. for a minute there i though i was the only one that thought breaking treaties was a bad idea. I don't care if we are the richest most powerful nation in the world. if we break a treaty that makes us assholes. Its bad enough that most of the world is pissed that we won't be backing the Kyoto accords. Jesus I can't wait for the next election. I don't care what GW does as president so long as he stop making us all look like the arrogant asshole that most of the world already thinks we are.
finally who are these rogue threats we're worried about? Korea? if GW doesn't do something stupid (I have every confidence he will) then madeleine and Bill did a pretty good job of setting us on the road to a peaceful conclusion to the N.Korea problem. Iraq? iraq can't tie its own shoes. they don't have shoes. They are not a threat. Milosevic? hard to puch a button from behind bars. again not a threat. Pakistan or India? again not a worry. They have enough fun hating each other to worry about hating us too. lastly Iran? Iran wants coke and McDonalds as much as the rest of the world. Everyday they grow closer and closer to being better adjusted members of the world community. And don't forget these rogue nations wouldn't hate us so much if not for our meddling where we don't belong. The US has been for too long the stranger on a street that decides he knows more about how I should argue with my girlfriend than I do. Nobody like that kind of guy. These nations (some of them) have good reason to hate us. Iran started hating us when we decided they couldn't choose their own government. We'd be in a different situation now if France had felt the same way in 1776. I'll climb down off my soapbox now.
They may be a moonopoly or proto monopoly but they have been one of the nicer monopolies we go up against daily. Its hard to hate them when they allow things like mozilla to continue working in concert with AOL/netscape and they haven't screwed ICQ from what I can tell (i don't use ICQ). and they haven't gotten around to shutting me out of IM even though I use gaim (or whatever they have to call themselves today) and there is always the possibility that they will produce AOL/Linux someday which would be a boon for us in the battle against MS. I know all of this can be argues and if any of my past posts are a guide they will be but, AOL could be quite a bit more evil.
mind you I stopped using aol waaaay back when they still didn't have web access and the user count was a measly 500,000. That was like 93-94 or therabouts. But i happily use IM and wouldn't give one whit if they put a postage stamp ad on my 1280x1024 screen.
I can't remember the exact name of the software I think its called stream ripper and I've only seen it in windows I'm sure there is or can be a OSS version put together that easily sidesteps the copy protection on realplayer streams and heck any audio stream. It simply takes the place of your soundcard as the in/out device and allows you to record anything to a wav or mp3. would something like this defeat the maacrovision?
If you want to see robots with weapons they are allowed on robticon on TLC mind you roboticon is even more lame than battlebots. I've seen nets shot from one robot and there was one that had a poorly implemented flamethrower. considering that we only have two choices for robot action on tv I'd have to say that battlebots is by far the more interesting show. roboticon is just boring. ahmet zappa is a dweeb.
I'm really glad to hear of this review of sorts. I've been wanting to get the new ibook since it came out explicitly to run linux and macosx they both appeal to my new sensibilities of what computers and operating systems should be
would this any way apply to the gpl? someone else mentioned that MS licenses are inside abox that you can't see until you purchase the software but the GPL is just as hard to find. I read the GPL once or twice but when was the last time you read the COPYING file before downloading and installing GPL software. it seems that just as we could use this in some way against MS, MS could use it againt us. "We never saw the license before we used the GNU tcp/ip stack in windows so it doesn't apply in our case."
don't like posting to myself but i thought of something else. Isn't Australia just hurting themselves? what company (IT type)in their right mind would want to set up shop in Australia never knowing if the next law would ban their business. Australia may end up with no new technology companies and an even more troubled economy if they keep this up.
I don't know if/. just posts more stories about austalian laws than other countries or if australia is just made up of some of the dumbest legislators on earth. I just never would have expected australia to be the legislative freaks they are turning out to be. for once it looks like the best place to be doing computer work (fun or profit) is still the U.S. or maybe India (but at least the U.S. has food) Its articles like this one that make me feel better about living in a country with a first ammendment. isn't there anything similar to that in Oz? I used to want to live in Oz (kangaroos and koalas are cool. kooks aren't) I'll stay here in the U.S. thank you very much.
well, I'm already in a kind of defacto boycott as it is. i don't run windows anymore so when i need to write a webpage i use vi not pagemaker or whatever its called and when i need to read pdfs i use ghostscript and finally when i feel a need to express myself in purty pictures i use the GIMP...oh and Killustrator. so basically all thats left to me is belittlement. hey if nothing else perhaps we'll see a surge in development for programs like the GIMP
to all concerned:
apparently we just pissed off a few million Open Source users and developers. Expect to be belittled repeatedly much in the same way MS is.
To The CEO: Do you want your borg apparatus on the left or right side of your head whenever/. posts a story about our products and activities?
we made linux and the sundry OSS programs because MS didn't give us what we wanted the way we wanted it. I don't know much about what.NET offers or why I would want it (I don't care one way or the other) but I'm more interested in an OSS version of.NET (.Virus maybe?) I don't see a reason to port MS stuff to linux. I just don't. I don't think anyone is firm on using.NET yet and if they know that there will be an ultra portable OSS system coming down the pike that behaves much like.NET perhaps they'll wait. Apache is better than MS servers so maybe.Virus will be better than.NET. I'd focus more on doing our own thing (which we excel at) than trying to copy MS.
I'd have to take these benchmarks with a grain of salt. I'm no programmer (I'm lucky if i can remember basic and html) but I'd wait on holding these benches as certain until the code is optimized. the difference in a benchmark of an operating system written by monkeys from redmond (no offense) and monkeys from open source is great (I'm speaking in terms of benchmarking the code of a hypothetical identical os written by the two teams, not diffs between linux and windows) so all you genius coders slashdot the guy and help him tighten up his code then we'll rerun the benchmarks. small tweaks of diff lang code can be the difference between perl and php being better at one or another thing. ultimately though you come down to there not being one or even a set of languages that is/are the best. even if one language is a dog against all the rest there may be one thing it does best and in that situation you use the best tool for that particular job.
i can only speak of suncom. their SMS only talks to other suncom phones but as far as cost goes they have an unlimited monthly plan for only 49.95 which I'm thinking is not a bad deal considering that when i had a 5 hour plan before i would routinely go over my limit and end up paying monstrously for extra minutes. I figure if i can get dsl i might as well have a cell with unlimited minutes for the same price. plus the g/f uses the same company and we short message all day long.
there are cameras everywhere. and the police have just as much right to use cameras to look at you as they do binoculars. the whole idea is to give the police more eyeballs. if you're a crook or just a common sidewalk spitting citizen then the onus is on you to turn your head and wear a hat. I wouldn't suggest a mask for anyone though. in case you forgot its against the law to wear a mask in the perpetration of a crime. its also jsut as easy to have guy in a van watching the cameras telling a guy on the street to grab darcula by the lamp post.
