  1. The guns...they've stopped! on RIAA Claims P2P Has Been Contained · · Score: 1

Personally, I'd look at this announcement (had I actually RTFA - this is /. after all), I'd be quite wary of stuff like this. Rosen's comments, while interesting both for their their content and possible motive, do not represent the RIAA anymore. Who's to say that six months from now, they don't release the hounds on their customers again?

  2. Re:Eat your own dog food on Microsoft Employees May Lose Admin Rights · · Score: 1

Agreed. Although, I don't think this will improve security directly, as much as it will improve their QA processes, which in turn makes more secure and stable products. Maybe now they'll discover you can't run WindowsUpdate on an XP Pro SP2 machine without admin privileges, and fix it!

  3. MOD PARENT UP on Running Windows Without Administrator Privs? · · Score: 1

I attempted to post on this last night, but db maintenance got in my way.

Not being able to run WindowsUpdate is a major impediment to people being able to run windows with non-admin accounts. This is one of the reasons why I'm happy I switched to a Mac Mini last year, and why I still loath having to support my wife's Windows laptop.

If there's some way to do it, please let me know - I haven't had time to read through the blog linked in other posts.

I've read through the article summary, the article, and the rockbox site, and I can't find a simple answer to the following question: What is it that this firmware offer (besides its open-software-ness). It appears that it provides ogg support, but there's not a clear description of anything else.

I also enjoyed how the author was looking for very specific things in his portable music player, and then ignored them due to price. That is capitalism at its best.

I think your friend considers ignorance to be a security shield. Unfortunately it's not.

  8. IF YOU KEEP TURNING IT UP...IT WILL BE LOUD! on Earbud Headphones May Cause Hearing Loss · · Score: 2, Insightful

I'll admit it - I didn't rtfa, but here's my thoughts on all of these "X will make you go deaf" stories:

Yes, if you keep making things louder and louder, eventually you're going to experience hearing loss. Additionally, in my personal experience, listening to something in only one ear (like a cell phone, or a single-side headset) it will be much louder if the other ear isn't blocked (y'know, by sticking a finger in it), or listening to the same stuff.

I disagree with the blanket statements like "earbud heaphones cause hearing loss", though. I've been using a pair of Etymotic ER6i headphones (yes, they're earbuds), but the work on the concept of isolation from other outside noises. Think of a foam earplug with a decent heaphone in the center. Using those, I find I'm actually enjoying the quiet, and tend to play my music at a much *lower* volume than I would with more open headphones.

I find that hard to believe.

I'll admit to the following things:

1.) I've never listened to an episode of "Geeks in Space" although the show did exist when I began lurking on /. - long before I registered or posted.

2.) I've never been indoctrinated to the "Cult of Leo" that seems to arise around him - never saw a TechTV show, or listened to any of his stuff before discovering TWiT about a month ago.

My goodness, that show is *horrible*. It is too long, not that informative, and contains way too much ego mastubation to continue listening to it. (I gave it a shot - three episodes...and then adios). It's a shame, because Leo sounds like he could have some potential as a tech broadcaster, but *over an hour* to do nothing but ramble with an occasional buzzword here and there? No thanks.

Even with the dupes, I'm sure Taco and the rest of the gang were superior to that effort.
