We certainly have more than two options. This is not an on or off situation. I am grateful for the freedom I have in this society to choose what I eat, but that choice is being taken away from me. The buzz word at the special grocers these days is "organic" It seems all too ironic that we'll end up paying more to get food that somebody didn't go mucking around with in a laboratory AND that a chain of custody on food will need to be established similar to a drug test container headed to a laboratory, just to ensure you're not getting frakenfood. There are other technologies at our disposal to increase food output and we are far from the point of having to tweak things at the genetic level: IMHO that should be an option of last resort: Like if we enter an ice age...which the sun is now showing signs of, being presently flagged as "too quiet" Perhaps all this global warming and extra CO2 is like the world putting on a jacket, getting ready for a long winter...I digress..

Consider that mankind really hasn't been around that long: Especially in comparison to plant-life.
Consider that mankind is 100% dependent on plant-life to survive.

Altering the genetic structure of our food may seem like a great idea in the short term for many positive reasons, including the elimination of famine.

The problem is we simply do not have the foresight to know what will happen thousands of generations after the epoch of our genetic manipulations: Not only to the plants, but to those who consume them.

Genetic diversity is good, it is necessary for survival. What happens to that diversity when a super-plant is created that dominates all the species around it? Including those that consume it? Will the only thing we can eat a thousand years from now be corn?

Most of the miracles of medicine have been gifts from nature and much of what has been discovered was right in front of us the whole time. Gee that's weird...I ate that piece of moldy bread because I was starving and now I feel better! I thought that mold was going to make me sick.

What if I wasn't starving? What if I had an abundance of bread, because that bread was genetically engineered to resist blight. Since there is no blight, I'm not hungry enough to eat moldy bread, but there isn't even any mold on the bread because mold can't grow on the genectically resistant grain it was made from.

So the whole population becomes fat and happy until a super-bug comes along and knocks out 99% and I die because I didn't eat my moldy bread.

I for one would at least like to have a choice, but presently there are no incentives or laws (that I know of) motivating companies to inform you, that they have completely screwed you over, by screwing up the genetic code of what you are eating, just so they can add a few percentage points to their profits, so that the stock price will go up, so that Daddy CEO can retire next year; and that they really don't know what will happen ten years from now, but your generation seems like the perfect guinna pig.

Cough...ahem...seriously though...a net sounds like a better idea because there would be uniformity in the pressure distribution and less likelyhood of bulges (although I'm sure there's a better medical term for that) Now this is making me go deep on thought here...this might be nuts, but who knows...what if instead of a net, a sack was used and then filled with nonNeutonian fluid thus rendering resistance only when the heart expands too violently?? The fluid solution could be adjusted to be weaker or stronger, providing more or less counter pressure. I don't think this would be hard to do, all you would need it a dual chambered sack and then when you filled the outer chamber it would take on the shape of the heart...I'm sure there are all kinds of reasons why none of this is feasible, but at least Slashdot gives us a forum to think.

Additionlly: Students now realize that there are people living in India with Masters degrees that will work for the same wage as a Wal-Mart Cashier. When choosing a career path, logic tells them that they will not be able to compete in an the unfair, unbalance arena of Global outsourcing, because the U.S. Govt taxes U.S. businesses higher than any other nation in the world. Presently it practically makes no sense to run a large business in the United States, but somehow our economy is still standing: Well...more like has fallen to one knee as it is puking it's guts out. Choosing a field that cannot be outsourced IS the smartest thing to do, but I'm sure they'll think of a way to start outsourcing hospitals and doctors...research is already cheaper and as I'm sure you're aware alot of it is done abroad, not only because of the reduced cost, but because other Government's are smart not to restrict things such as stem-cell research and when they do, it is usually because of pressure from that big crazy guy in that red, white and blue stripped suit with the tall hat. Thus research that a corporation would normally fund at a University, might just end up being done in a Malaysian basement. What exacerbates this is a very large percentage (>70% ??) of the foreign students will return home rather than remaining in the United States and becoming citizens, thus further weakening the intellectual strength of our economy. Interestingly enough certain research, such as "Defense," that cannot leave the United States, is highly funded and limited to U.S. citizens with a flawless criminal record. Don't expect to do research on the weekends at Area 51 if you were busted for smoking a joint in your Firebird, driving down Sterling Boulevard. What you then find is that AFTER the research has been declassified, that the technology trickles down to the citizens and in this manner the Government can control which companies get what first, handing out patents to the Good ole boys. Just take a look at CACI, Haliburtun, Raytheon...the list goes on and on. The big picture is Globalization and a secret society seeking a new world order, with one world Government where the freedoms we have today will be unthinkable tomorrow (because of security concerns of course) and freedom of speech won't even be thought of because there won't even be freedom of thought AND if you think such a thing as "Thought crime" is out there??? It already exists! I have witnessed the media brand people as a criminals, simply for what they think and not at all based on their actions. These thought criminals are then sought out by the police for harassment, such as constant surveillance, being pulled over every time you go out, being arrested as a "suspect" every other week. This things are happening with great frequency, but we don't here about them on TV, but occasionally site like Slashdot will bring us the truth, but I suspect the whole Internet will come crashing down soon, much like the World-Trade center, because it threatens the powers that be. Of course the news will report something like, "Radical VWX hackers broke into key TU control facilities and disabled all master VWX routers with the YZ virus." Experts claim it will take months to rebuild the internet." During which time we all all be blind AND the Internet as we know it will be no longer as its doppleganger will be under the complete control of the Globalists' secret society bent on one world order and World Domination with it.
