Sure, you can make money at it, but 'the industry' is soooo lopsided right now that the RIAA/Rosen claims make me laugh. This stuff all ties in also with the MPAA and p2p (duh!) and DRM. These groups have been stifling artists rights for some time and now their only recourse, after 'the people' as in we, have spoken, is to go after us. Threatening to pass legislation to get 'copyrighted' material off our computers if need be!
What you can do:
1. Don't buy trash crap from Britney and the like
2. Smash your MTV (they're literally nothing but a delivery vehicle for the big 5, period!)
3. Get into your local scene. This is where the best stuff always is. And if there isn't one, make one!
4. If you find you have a p2p song that's been 'doctored' remove it. This will keep the good stuff flowin and the rage against the machine growin.
So, there is stuff we can do. We just have to get off our asses and do it. Or, lay down with the wolves...
Not retaliating and not punishing is weakness?? Wow, and we have the ability to reason because why?
Hmmm, and, throughout history, what would you say to all the Vietnemese families, American-Japanese interned in WWII, Phillipino families during the Teddy Roosevelt Gunboat diplomacy years, Central American families during the Regan era (ugh, god.., i shiver at the thought), relatives of all the dictators we supported throught the 20th century who saw the ends of so many others? (I won't even begin to go into US corporate exploitation of world peoples and resources)
What about the Palestinian families who have lost ones from an American bullet from a Israeli soldier? What would you say to an Israeli mother who lost a son or daughter soldier to a Palestinian bomber? (both completely horrific)
Who pays then? Losing someone is undescribable. But does making those pay really make them pay? What about their sons or daughters? You haven't changed their minds. And thusly, up rises the next generation and the cycle continues.
Sure, make them pay, but solve the problem too! Or, you'll be making more pay later. And more families will suffer. And we'll be at war again.
When you were little, did your parents tell you to keep trying to kick Jonny's ass down the street? Or did they tell you to make up and be friends? And were you not almost best friends later on?
One of the only things that still brings me comfort in our sorry state of world affairs is my diverse group of friends. The world is a different place when you have other viewpoints to discuss with and learn from. American culture is not the only and nor is it the best. Sigh. But sadly, we still haven't learned a year later and unfortunately, now we know others pain..
First off, AC says it all.
Second, The only way to avoid this kill and be killed is to stop supporting fucked up regimes abroad! Have you ever been abroad?! I was over in India, about 50km from the Pak border when Delhi was attacked last December. I was a scared shitless whitie driving parallel to the border, surrounded by foreigners, and seeing troops and big ass missle and weapons caravans drive by. War is not some little piss ass, edited for cnn, clip provided by the government for us (gee, that's an oxymoron if i've ever hear one).
A lot of the Osama types are really pissed of not just at us, but at the ruling Saudi Arabia regime. You think just cuz they're our ally they're ok? Or did you even know that? Hmm, read about Whabism and more about the ruling Saudi family and you'll start to get an idea of why having the biggest waster of world resources in the most sacred place in all of Islam makes some people get really pissed. How would you feel if some people came to the parking lot of your church and started doing animal sacrafices or something against your God or Godly artifacts; things you thought were totally whacked?! Of course, it's not right to kill and not all Saudis (or anyone else for that matter) are 'bad', but events happen for reasons - right or wrong. The more people know about those reasons - i.e., history - the more they understand and can make better decisions.
As much as I love the US, you think we're any less barabric than any other country out there? We definitely didn't kill 6 mln jews, but we helped kill ~ 2mln vietnemese, scores in central america (remember that!?) - and that's only 2 of many incidents in the last 30 years that the US has in/directly supported.
If you travel outside the world, you get a pretty good idea of what the US is to others. A enigma; a place where everyone is wealthy; a place that makes great movies (some of the time); a place of freedom; a place where one can vote! (unless of course, your black and live in Florida); and, of course, a bully. Time and time again we've walked away from UN resolutions and global conferences because we can - and that's bullshit!. Do as I say, not as I do.. Uh-huh. I like most of us here. But I can't stand this attitude like 'we're sooooo innocent and right and screw you if you screw with us'. However, with extreme regimes around the world, this attitude is similar.
And as far as loving democracy and freedom, you must be stoked right now! I'm sure you support right not to distribute DeCSS? (altho that was prior to 9/11, but still) The DMCA? (ditto) Detaining suspects with no proof of any wrong doing? The RIAA and their lot? The Berman bill?! Some of these don't have a direct link to 9/11, but the whole 'fuck freedom and the constitution' have made it easier for horrendous laws to see the light of day or the 'light' around the corner. Gee, further flushing down the toilet one of the few things that others in the world look up to us for.
As far as 'un-America', wtf is that!? America is the most diverse country in the world! 'un-American'? Ya know, go grab your gun or whatever and go sign up for the army if this is how you feel. Go kill! Go perpetuate the endless cycle. Go for it! I , unlike you, get sick of people who have no common sense and no desire to get past the human condition of kill and kill again - something that 2000 years has done little to change. If more of you people that hate everyone or some just die off, then maybe those of us who really believe that there can be peace will have some room to achieve it. The constitution, not just for the US, but for every common person on this planet is more than just a noble idea. That's what you should be fighting FOR, no against! Ugh, people like you really piss me off - but, I'd never hurt you because of it. And, I'll always recognize your right to disagree with it.
Ya know, if someone said you molested your sister after some article was posted about you, you'd probably be bummed out. SO CAN ALL THE PERSONAL ATTACKS, OK!?!? Jerk! Sometimes people can be real assholes here. Sheesh....
Ahh, the illusion of support. I had a friend who worked for Weblogic support and boy, did he have some stories.
Word to the wise, learn the non-BEA/IBM servers yourself. Newgroups are often 10X more useful than waiting on the phone. You'll usually find your answer there instead of hearing 'um, let us get back to you, ok? I gotta check into this.'
While it might not seem crystal clear, if someone has a manager that needs to yell at someone, it's usually for the following reasons:
1. They don't understand the product at all and thusly freak out about it when their servlet to access the payroll system is not working at all. (usually due to some dumb class path issue)
2. They've dumped a bunch of money into a product so they can freak out in case it doesn't work. But this still leaves the project at a stand still.
3. If the project is at a stand still, then the Mgr should be held accountable for not making good decisions and for not hiring people who actually know about the products they're using instead of getting the Excel guy from across the room to build a J2EE app. (Honest, this has happened before).
When it becomes all about face, then you buy into support. When you wanna get the job done, you hire a pro and get it done.
Well you obviously haven't been on a 'Bud' or 'Sci-Fi Channel' in the NYC subway. Entire cars decked out for one or more products. The one that gets me the most are the Bud ads. There's this one nice lookin chick, holdin a Bud, kinda starting at the camera like "you just got lucky tonight..." I'm sure that happens all the time in Oklahoma or South Dakota...
So in other words, all employees bow down to your employers and think like they do or else you'll get fired?? Gee, I wanna work there or wherever you currently put your keyboard.
Luckily at my office my abilities and opinion are greatly valued!
I helped co-found a startup that in the end, fell victim to the biz people around it. During the whole funding phase where we had to pound the pavement for cash, biz people were telling us/me (since i was the nerd) "you have to have something patentable. Here check out so and so's patent on a shopping cart. Can we do something like that?" I was like "uh well, no." Other guy, "well, what about something else? Anything?!"
Point is is that companies like these suck and know they've got a tough, if not impossible road ahead of them. And instead of really innovating, they follow the patent route. In reality, their end will come and it will be either cuz they're stuff sucks or prior art will invalidate and then all the investors will realize their stuff sucks. I hope they all loose their shirts on it only cuz it is unethical. Especially in light of prior art already existing.
What's even more stupifying is that our crazy patent office is still giving crap like this out! The horror...
Yah, someone needs to read the EULA. You basically gave them rights to sleep with your relatives... Uh oh! They'll want more than that too in the next "Service Pack".
Great, so since it seems ok now, it should be ok in the future. Uh-huh, right. The last thing I ever want is some scheme cooked up by one of the most unethical companies in the world magically managing my music collection. And I'm not just some metallica trading trailer homie, I'm a actual musician. [ghasp!] Imagine that, someone that still makes content instead of jsut consuming it!
[3 years in the not so distant future...]
MS: Dear user, We have noticed that you have the same music collection as Jimmy Jam down the street at 555 Main St. It is possible that you just have the same tastes in music, but we feel that we should warn you that you might be in direct violation of the DMCA. Further more, you will be contacted by the BSA for a software and content audit. Have a good day.
Ha ha! So sure, go ahead, give them an inch. History has shown time and time again that we must fight for the right things cuz they won't be given to us. I for one, would rather have a million cd's than m$ montoring and managing my music collection. For me, that'll never happen.
So enjoy your prison sentence and good day. Remember, the transnats are just around the corner looking thru your open windows...
Well there u have it. have yr wma, locked in, monitored on bill gates toilet screen, piece of crap OS and file format then.
I'll stick with my iPod (flash card, yah, that's about as useful for music as a square wheel), 192 VBR mp3 encoding, and - here's the biggie - CHOICE! YOU WILL HAVE NO CHOICE WITH WMA! PERIOD!
ANYONE who has a clue about OS's and who graces/. and uses wma should be locked in a closet at m$ headquarters.
When it comes down to it, anyone not using ogg or mp3 is really cutting their own throats as well as the rest of the computing world. When controlled formats such as wma become bigger than open formats such as ogg or even somewhat open mp3, then the vehicle to shut down ALL other formats will be in place.
This IS the battle being waged in congress and marketplace - your right to choose what you listen to media on and how you want to listen to it, not to mention if you ever want to create it (imagine that, the opposite of just consuming everything.. amazing..). But, people only care when things have been taken away and it becomes too late. boo hoo. argh!
Wake up and take a few minutes to do the right thing and help out the people that really care. I know you couldn't give a rats ass, but it will help the human race out in the long run. Your children might even know what it would be like to live in a world not dominated by disney and m$. imagine that!
I moved across the us recently and decided to ditch all my tubes (tv & monitors). i got a ati tv wonder usd and it's totally kick ass. works off either cable or antenna. plug it into a networked computer, give it a zip code, and voila!, u have tv in that local area. my friend has tivo, and it's cool. but when i get my projector goin (ati also has a remote for this), i'll have a mobile projection system. even a 640x480 projector on a wall will look better than most tubes. i basically gave my tv away. just like the old radios yr granparents mighta dug and have since bitten the technology dust, so will tube tv's. expect more tv wonder type devices. now, if only it worked on my tibook..:(
Hmm, well, this doesn't necessairly make you more secure just cuz you switched over from m$ to non-m$.
ASP vs. Perl is no great thing. They're both still scripting.
SQL vs. MySQL is no biggie either. Big deal, they're still db's.
IIS vs. Apache. Mmmm, well, Apache has shown it's strength and maturity there, but it's different than IIS, so, I dunno.
I guess my question is why did you switch? Do you know all the exploits from both systems? Or is it because *nix is 'supposed' to be more secure??
The only real way to be sure for yourself is to know all products inside and out. I'm no m$ champion or anything, but your statements are pretty broad and generic. And that tells me, possibly, lack of experience and full understanding. But I guess if you don't give into the man, then more power to you.
One, ok, so, another m$ "exploit". Why does it always have to have this "see, we told you" attitude? After a while, you get tired of finger pointing. Especially when it's all action and little thought. Think? Nah, I'll just complain first and then eat my foot later.
Two, any IDIOT that puts their SQL server on a public network deserves to get it cracked. This would be the same for any db on a public network. I mean, c'mon, a null sa password?! If someone told you to jump off a cliff, would you? Common sense yo! Jeeze..
Fellow/.'s, I have to put forth the real issue here which is bad sysadmin. True, m$'s strategy is 'fast, easy, fun', and while it is probably better practice to lock everything down on install vs. not, it's not a m$ problem so much as it is an admin problem.
I've worked for companies which take the easy road (hire dumb people to do smart things) and the hard road (smart peeps, smart things) and that's what this is all about. Not m$ as much as the companies that are cost cutting everywhere (except when it comes to executive perks), especially IT.
It is true that m$ does have a lot of security through obscurity issues, but it would be time well spent jumping on the cracked systems than m$. Because, honestly, they don't care. These systems can me made as secure/insecure as the sysadmin wants, so it's really their fault.
Look, when you install something on someone's system - granted, no one really reads EULAs and that's a problem in itself not entirely the fault of the end user but the vendor too - that they don't know about, then it's spyware. EULAs are garbage. They are totally legal mumbo jumbo. And more than not, M$ is a prime example, Yahoo too, they're not in the best interest of the user, but arm twisting favor of the vendor. Think this is wrong? Well, then howcome I can't get a laptop from a big vendor w/out a copy of Windoze on it?
By tucking in little clauses that say people can't use a program to remove your bundled software is bullshit and not in the end users best interest. Period! Sell your app then if you need money. Bombarding people with ads will just get you annoyed users.
As far as distributing/hosting problems, there are plenty of apps out there that are mirrored in many different places. Sure, it might be a pain in the ass to update 20 mirrors, but that's what they're there for - so u don't have 10GB d/l probs on one server.
It's nice that you want to keep yr app 'free', but does it really deserve to be? I don't know of many or any GNU or GPL apps that have such bullshit EULAs as RadLight.
If I was Ad-aware, I'd put a counter-counter clause in my EULA forcing you guys to pay me a million dollars or something for removing my software. A registry setting or something similar could confirm that my app was installed first. Sounds stupid? Well, IT IS! This eye for an eye approach sucks!
Whatever, you have your reasons, but screw your users over and go poking around and intentionally delete software on their machines and you're asking for trouble. If you did that to my machine, I'd wait till you came to my town and kick your ass!! I'm sure others feel the same way!
And btw, I don't want anonymous or not statistics sent to some company so they can better understand how to help me purchase better. Number one rule, don't trust companies to be your friend. Because, like M$ and others, they only have the bottom line in mind and will screw ya when they get the chance. I don't find much value of having some app know that I want such and such cd's and have it go fetch for me. I know what I want and where to get it. That is the only thing I can trust.
xml maps are not easy. while complex types are neat, this is no easy task. xml can be confusing as hell, much more than the objects they wrap.
some stuff does work and yah, it's nice over https, but it's really a technology about 70% hype and the rest maybe some varying degree of usefulness..
Marketing Hype = More $$$
on
Web Services
·
· Score: 2, Insightful
I'm actually knee deep in the poop of webservices and 2++ things that come to mind on this subject:
1. they're not actually useful. i mean, who's gonna publish their auction webservice or requisition web service for someone else to use? it's nice that u can get order tracking for fedex - i guess that's useful - or stock quotes. but, beyond that, there's no point.
2. companies like bea (esp bea) and ibm need more revenue and hyping web services to sell 'corporate developer' tools is their way to go. bea esp. is learning from m$ with their whole 'all in one visually appealing code completion server starting package' server and gui tool. and this appeals to a large market of 'corporate developers'. by corporate developers, and i'm taking this straight from the horses mouth, i mean developers that are not full blown ejb/c/python, etc... people. basically newbies that can open an ide and connect to a db via some sort of control. definitely not vi or emacs people.
however, if u use their tools (which i do, unfortunately on a daily basis), i don't see how a corp dev. is gonna understand hooking into ejb's and such. it's not as trivial as their canned sales demos make it.
it's really all about the market making more money for itself. "oh, well, any app server's can do ejb, but hey, can yours do web services?" check out xmethods, anything interesting there? hardly.
there might come a day where these services are avail for rent as components and that might be useful the same way components are now, but until then, no use beyond the good ol stock quote or google search. come to think of it, is the google search really useful at all?
Ya know, I ocntinualy write various senators and such on issues like this. Here is what I sent Sen. Boxer (I'm in CA):
I take great offense as a Californian that you support Fritz Hollings and the SSCA. I have been in the music and computer industries in one way or antoher for most of my life. While I agree that 'artists' should get their just royalties, the reality is that they get little compared to the companies and organizations that 'represent' them. The MPAA, RIAA, and Disney are at best case, a sham. They are all self serving and will not stop until they gain control of everyones creative talent. Now that you have joined on to the SSCA bandwagon with, in my point of view, the soul purpose of hijacking my computer (it's bad enough that this already happens in the recording industry itself) so that I cannot make 'copies' - which is totally legal by the way - of music I already *own*! This is outrageous and does NOT benefit the people you serve. Instead, you have joined the long line of politicians and special interest groups looking to serve youselves as well as squeeze every last drop out of anything 'the common man' has. We as a society should place a high value on original, creative, brilliant, and artistic thinkers. Without this, we will be owned by corporations and in the end envelop oourselves. What you support is not sustainable in the long run; we MUST think of the future and what rights our children and future generations will have. In closing I will have to say that I will bring this issue up with friends, family, co-workers and the like and remind them that you are not someone with the thoughts of the average citizen in mind, but someone who has sided with the corporations in the quest for domination and control over all.
One nice thing to think of tho is that if we have the source code, we'll pretty much always be able to bypass. At least there's still some hope...
The bottom line is people will pay for Mac hardware. And that means non-Intel chips (whatever they may be) at whatever price,as long as they're somewhat competitive in the price arena.
OS X is just a delivery for Apple's real cash cow - hardware. They have no reason to 'switch'. Also, with PPC, they prob have a lot of say, since they're pretty much the only company using them, in what goes into the architecture, etc. With Intel, no way.
Sheesh....
Get a real Dbase like Oracle or Sql 2000(if you can afford it)
Wow, you must have a MCSE or somethin...
If I only had a way to choose 'Block Images from this Server' when riding the train..
MS: Dear user,
We have noticed that you have the same music collection as Jimmy Jam down the street at 555 Main St.
/. and uses wma should be locked in a closet at m$ headquarters.
I'll stick with my iPod (flash card, yah, that's about as useful for music as a square wheel), 192 VBR mp3 encoding, and - here's the biggie - CHOICE! YOU WILL HAVE NO CHOICE WITH WMA! PERIOD!
ANYONE who has a clue about OS's and who graces
my friend has tivo, and it's cool. but when i get my projector goin (ati also has a remote for this), i'll have a mobile projection system. even a 640x480 projector on a wall will look better than most tubes. i basically gave my tv away. just like the old radios yr granparents mighta dug and have since bitten the technology dust, so will tube tv's.
expect more tv wonder type devices. now, if only it worked on my tibook..
A few things;
/.'s, I have to put forth the real issue here which is bad sysadmin. True, m$'s strategy is 'fast, easy, fun', and while it is probably better practice to lock everything down on install vs. not, it's not a m$ problem so much as it is an admin problem.
Jeeze..
Fellow
"oh, well, any app server's can do ejb, but hey, can yours do web services?" check out xmethods, anything interesting there? hardly.
there might come a day where these services are avail for rent as components and that might be useful the same way components are now, but until then, no use beyond the good ol stock quote or google search. come to think of it, is the google search really useful at all?
for $299! Came with 802.11 wireless card as well. Would have been a nice 'toy', but hard to justify. My PalmVII just collects dust now.
