Ok (if you count it) what language is more popular than JavaScript?? How the hell is that not #1??? JavaScript is everywhere and I'm sure 90% of the people here on Slashdot use it. That is bizarre. Something is wrong with their stats.
I am a fan. I think the engineers at GM asked the right questions when they built this car. How far does the average driver commute? How can we create an electric car that is a full replacement for the average car? How can we make the batteries powerful yet last for years? How can we make the car look decent and still accomplish our goals? I am no greenie but I love to see technology solve our current and future problems. I also am happy to see solutions that reduce our dependence on the Middle East.
And also don't forget that China and India are getting into the car phase driving demand even higher. I don't think they will be able to afford Volts any time soon.
Charging it isn't the problem. The Leaf has a maximum radius of 50 miles. If you want to drive outside that radius you are SOL. It isn't a practical car, it's maybe a good secondary car. The Volt on the other hand doesn't compromise it can replace your current car.
I would put the odd of gasoline going up to be much more likely. The Volt will charge off-peak at night not effecting our current load in any meaningful way.
The ripping and tearing during birth leads to infections and often death of the mother prior to modern medicine. It also causes major stresses on the newborn child again often leading to death.
Maybe if they got rid of the obnoxious blue penis and pointless gore they could have made it PG-13. While they're at it they could have also shaved an hour off the running time.
I would like to order one but I need a couple additional features... It needs to be water proof. It needs to have no fog lenses. It needs to be able to withstand the temperatures of a woman's locker room shower.
Not really what I was thinking. My thought was to basically drift down the course at let's say 5 mph, all the while you are spinning a flywheel to a very high rpm. At a designated point you release all the built up kinetic energy and propel the cycle through the checkpoints. I would think some very high speed could be achieved for a short time.
If stability is an issue you could use two smaller flywheels going in opposite directions.
Okay I'm a Volt fanboi but your numbers look a bit off. First the best case scenerio is for a range of 50 miles when it's brand new and a 40 mile range by the time it hits 100,000 miles.
The mpg while running on the engine may be around 40mpg. The original goal was 50mpg using a turbo charged 3 cyl 1 liter engine but they recently changed this to a 4 cyl 1.4 liter naturally aspirated engine. GM decided to use the 1.4 not because it was a better solution but because they had already designed the 1.4 and they wanted to keep costs down.
The batteries will never be charged to 100%. The design goal is to keep the charge between 30% and 80% to extend the life of the battery pack. When you charge it at night it will shut the charger off at 80% and when you drive it the engine will kick in when it hits 30%.
The engine will not charge the batteries above 40% and will adjust it's rpm to feed the needs of the driving that you need to get you home.
