What is it with you people? For years this is what people here have said they wanted... digital text books, and this is has the potential to do that, yet there are heaps of "not for me" posts. What's happened to everyones imagination?
Australia has 4 wks (20 days) per year + public holidays (roughly 10?), but a lot of us can roll one year into the next, you generally wont lose them if you don't take them. I normally have 2 wks a year and use the others to make a few extra long weekends and take off up the coast.
What a silly assumption and argument:) Of course I do. I still don't see why it can't be an extension. If you want it, load it, otherwise don't bother. I only print directions occasionally (for in the car), butfor reciepts I'm one of those crazy copy/paste and save reciept-as-a-text-file (or right click, save page as...) type of people to cut down on paper usage:)
Basic functionality should not be implemented as extensions.
Seriouly, how often do you print? I wouldn't call it basic functionallity, and it's under file - print. You can even add an icon to the task menu if you want, it's in the default set.
I don't see the problem with extensions. Just because some people want an option on the menu doesn't mean that everyone should be lumped with it. That's what extensions are for, so that it can be customised. I don't know about you, but I only have 2 or 3 extensions at any time, but that doesn't mean that i should force them on you.
can you really expect the average user to install an extension
Yes, I do. I don't really think it's that hard, and if it's something they want they'll figure it out. If they can't figure out how to intall an extension then 10 seconds of googling should fix them up. Though I think there should be a 'what is an extension' button on the extension window.
I wish they had *less* things on the context menu. I want to get rid of send link, send image, view source and set as wallpaper. The only time I hit them i by mistake.
Increase your sample set. I actually like the UI, but hey, that's just me. p.s. I turn off the menu and undo a lot of the new things that came in in 2.0
Isn't one power plant going to be more efficiant than 1000s of petrol engines? It's in thier interests to generate as much power from thier choice of fuel, whereas my mechanic is not, as long as my seems to be running okay he won't care. The power plant pays very smart people to keep it running well.
I'm with you, gimps UI isn't as bad as people make out. I learned gimp before I tried photoshop and I don't know why everyone thinks it's so great? I much prefer gimp, probably for the same reasons they prefer photoshop: familiarity.
I use it at work. It's handy for doing clipart type things and basic line drawings. Mostly to put into in-house documentation that I've written. I also have Gimp, but the UI is much simpler and all I really want are simple drawings done quick to show people where a power switch is, or a network plug or something simple where a photo would be over kill and not as clear (and look crappy!) btw, this is all under winxp.
A person that sits near me was trying to do a simple drawing in paint and complaining about it. I showed him this on my box and some of the stuff I'd done. I don't know if he coverted, but he did ask for the url later in the day.
Things that I really like: Round edges on squares easily, easy gradiants of different types, I think it's svg internally so scalling works well, alingment is okay (top bottom left right centre (they need to make this less confusing. but at least it's there, I haven't figured this out in gimp yet)) transperancy is easy, errm, that's about it off the top of my head. I think it is worth a go, even just for a play. Get some stuff from open clipart and test it out. The learning curve is shallow esp if you can photshop/gimp.
I haven't tried it yet, but that flowed text looks really cool!:)
I don't know if I'd agree with ya... surprise, this is/.:) I was'nt talking about one at a time though, more like 10-20% at a time. well, heres what i think:
1. shouldn't be a problem in a mid-sized bussisnes, make sure it's part of the budget and an annual cost. replace a third every year, no machine is older than 3 years.
2. If you're buying that many regularly you can normally get a sales rep who can do same deals knowing that you'll be back in 12mnts for the next lot.
3. HP, etc normally have bus. models that last for a while, plus don't do it 1 at a time, do it a third at a time. 3 types shouldnt be too hard to manage.
4. yeah, but youll have ALL the machines start to fail near the end of the cycle, not just some of them. and you IT dept will have to do massive roll outs, not steady replacements.
Anyway, that's about it... (sorry if this had erreors, I'm pretty tired.
No real interest whatsoever in whether or not you buy X piece of crap
Not good enough. That's the problem right there and why they will lose sales, and the deserve to with that attitude. So we should just hand over our money and be happy with shit service? No way...
In fact, they're lucky if they've ever even met the franchise owner of the store, let alone the owner of the company.
What? and do you think that we ever will? If you are serving a customer, you are the face of the company at that moment to them. If you don't care enough about customers, why should they care about your paycheck?
The manager at Best Buy is not sitting at home in a deep depression because you bought your printer at Circuit City instead
But he should pass it up the line that it's costing sales. Don't forget that customers owe stores nothing. Stores should have to work to get sales, that's what capitalism is all about. And if an item costs ($x + personal information) and people view that as too much to pay they'll lose sales.
Why not just replace the PCs that had the fans or HDDs that die, rather than replace the whole lot? Use serial numbers and asset tags to track the upgrades.
It's also worth mentioning that the meaning of 'theory' in science is different to every day use of the word. I know fundamentalist that say 'but it's (evolution) just a theory', and in turn surmise that 'it's not proven/real etc'.
I used to then point out what 'theory' means in science to them, but they aren't interested in listening as it isn't what they want to hear. They'd rather keep going through the world in thier little bubles. How sad:(
You can find them on specially built devices, but they are hard to type on. You can get software to remap your kb if you want to try it. I use remapkey, which is part of the windows resource kit.
I'm not trying to convert you, I just thought (as you said) that the origional poster was interested: "I'd be interested to hear from people who actually use it"
Use in meeting presentations where you don't want a full laptop, just plug straight into a data prjector? I wonder why they haven't done a keynote -> ipod interface yet? I guess you could do them as jpgs on the ipod photo?
Linux is lock at ver 2 of the GPL, it would require a huge effort (on Linuss part) to change this.

Dammit! I said go left!

On the firefox print thing: Write an extension if you want it that bad. It's not that hard, even I've managed to write some simple stuff.
But he's talking about teaching kids. They need skills aimed at 20 yrs in the future, or a good foundation to build other skills on.

They could have used one that pimps thier distro. That way when they do screenshots it has the distro type right there easy to see.
As an aside I prefer ksh over bash as well :)

Don't tell the bosses that, otherwise they'll be more downsizing :)
