Well, I don't intend to be a Canonical apologist, but they do make some stuff... Bazaar and Storm (on top of which Launchpad sits) as well as upstart.

As for Launchpad... they have been saying it will be fully open source Real Soon Now(TM) for ages, and who knows if/when they'll release it —after all, they're not legally obliged to do so.

Well, yeah, I didn't see the need for the GP to post the supposed "patent troll's" location. The summary already said that they were based in the US, I didn't see the need for this information (even if false) to be posted, it seemed to me that my (joke) post was implicit in the original posting, so I wrote that silly message calling down teh Internetz hate machine as a way of mocking the act of posting personal information of someone whose actions are scorned in an online community, especially after seeing the reaction to the story of Megan Meier. That said, I must admit that I would have enjoyed seeing some exploding vans.

But perhaps I misunderstood the original posting, and s/he was just trying to further demonstrate that the company was US-based...

  17. Re:Tired of SuSE on openSUSE 10.3 Public Release · · Score: 1

Well, I don't know what causes this (I don't know much about the kernel... upgrading hoses module-loading configuration?), but in Ubuntu you have to reinstall the 'binary blob' nVidia driver when you install an upgrade to the kernel, easy stuff with Synaptic, otherwise it breaks (failed to load the kernel module, it says). Perhaps you had to do that too with the driver for your wireless card in Suse?

  18. Re:I'm sorry, but I'm calling you on this crap on The World's Languages Are Fast Becoming Extinct · · Score: 1

I think you missed the GP's point. He didn't ever say anything about the superiority of one language over another (you're making the absolutely ungrounded assumption that the toll they're using is somehow necessary, or better, than other tool that they will have available) he just said that a language is molded by the experiences of its speakers, and that it molds its (new?) speakers as well.

To put this in the language-is-a-tool perspective, it means that they made their tool to be useful to them along the way, and maybe it is worth to know what was useful to them. Just like different hammers are useful for different nails (why are hammers analogies so popular on /.?). Maybe knowing what their nails were would be useful, or at least interesting, who knows?

Or have I missed your point?
