    This seems to reinforce the idea that there are "time bombs" in cells that cause the aging/death process. It may also be possible to extrapolate that something in the genetic material has "programmed" the apparent age.


    This is interesting. This may make it easier to scientists to isolate the part of the genes that cause us to grow old and die aftet about 80 years. Living longer not only will improve our life (we get smarter and gain more experience as we grow older), but we will be forced into looking for more places to habitate, i.e. space travel. As people live longer and more people are born, this planet does not have the capacity to sustain us all, unless we stop having babies (not probable). The prospect of living longer will be a boon to those setting out on super long missions to other stars in search for planets to inhabit. In the meantime, Mars should hold us over for some time ;).

    One of the good outcomes of this may be the proliferation or the PPC processor in computer systems. IBM seems to be testing the Linux waters with this Linux compatibility layer on top of AIX. Hopefully, we might see PPC systems shipping from IBM that use Linux for the office computing sector.

    Its style is a bit "tabloid" and thoroughly biased(anti-MS, anti-Intel), but you can pick up some useful snippets of information.

    SMP may not be possible but perhaps the can put many small boards in one case and have them run in parallel. There could be a mainboard with some PCI slots and all the ports, and slots where you can plug in these semi-computerboards with the processor, cache, memory sub-system and slots...
    Could work...I wonder if 64bit 66MHz PCI would have enough through-put...hmm

    I just wish they'd bring on Broadband. So many people in my neighborhood have it, I get less than optimal speeds.

    FTP downloads are like 110kps and cable to cable is like 20-40kps.

    VV works fine. I've used it several times and it has a 95% accuracy rate. Its great for dictation of long letters and can greatly reduce RSI. But for normal operation, giving it commands, like "delete file 'titsXXX.jpg'" is still out of the question. Especially in a business environment. I wouldn.t want other employees knowing exactly what i'm doing all the time. There is a measure of security using the keyboard of mouse to do system related tasks. But this is still a good thing.

    MacOS 8.6 (in beta, should be released in a couple weeks) has preemptive multi-tasking. And SMP(real) for up to 64 processors. And a new memory protection manager (though, not as good as Linux). These improvments are brought by a new kernel called NuKernel. Uses technology from the Copland project.

    Where should i start...

    PCI, USB are standards that are licenced. Not stolen. All computers use these standards. No one steals them...

    SDRAM and IDE drives are standard not only on PCs but also Suns, SGIs, RS6000s etc (well maybe not IDE). Using them in thier systems in no way constitutes "stealing".

    True, but a case comes with a powersupply. A cheap power supply can breakdown easy, ruin a motherboard, etc. Its not a risk anyone building a computer needs to take. A good case from a respectable case manufacturer will cost you around $70-$100. Its a good buy. I'd rather spend the extra $50 or so on a better case than to spend it on a processor thats 33-66MHz more.

    If Windows does preemptive multi-tasking, or protected memory , then they do it very badly. OS 8.6 has real preemptive multi-tasking and a new protected memory manager, based on the original Copeland kernel. BTW: Has SMP capabilities up to 64 processors. Not a joke.

    Have you factored in the cost of shipping these individual cost of each part...and the time spent assembling them.

    Sure, right. You guys always amaze me...

    Tell the old woman looking for a PC to do simple stuff, that its cheaper to build a PC than to purchase a prebuilt one. I wonder why Dell, Apple, IBM, Gateway, etc haven't all gone out of business. Clue: not every one has the time/patience/technical ability to build a PC. The extra price is worth it, you get a working out of box machine with a warranty and the knowledge that everything works properly on it. No offence to people who like to build PCs...I love it too. But for most people, the prospect of making a PC from scratch would be a nightmare.

    Even though I know you are being purely sarcastic , the Imac does not offer 'terrible' price/performance. In fact Apple is improving it by bumping the speed up to 333MHz. At the same $1199 price.
    BTW: its iMac, not Imac. No biggie....

    There will be no charge for 8.5>8.6. If you want to get a CD with the 8.6 update on it, they will charge, though....big deal.

    BTW: The new 8.6 nanokernel is a BIG improvement! It supports REAL preemptive multitasking and a better memory manager called Guard Pages. Not as good as Linux or MacOS X Server, but much better. Also there is REAL SMP. My friend loaded beta4 on a 9500 with a dual 604 @ 200MHz and the speed is 60% faster overall. That means no more MP-enabled apps are needed to take advatage of dual processors. In fact up to 64 processors are supported (theoretically) although the most ever tested in beta was 12 (604e). I am using 8.6b4 and have yet to crash my system under 8.6 (in 2 months.)
