    On the bright side, even if the whole of Linux gets rejected, someone will come up with 'clean' code (like Atheos).

    For me Free Software is all about the apps - if an OS can run Samba, PostgreSQL, Emacs then I'm happy.

    If Linux *disappeared* tomorrow - I wouldn't care one bit, becasue we have FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD and to certain extent Mac OS X.

    Nintendo produces enough quality games by themselves, that I'd still buy a Gamecube if every single third-party developer dropped dead.

    For $200 - you can get a nice little box that hookes up to your TV and can play Zelda on it. Just for that, it's $200 well spent. If you're a poor SOB, sell it for $100.

    Hell, XBOX owners think the same thing - they practiaclly can call it the HALO-BOX.

    I've bought a Japanese shap SL-C700 - and the support available is excelent as usuall for an 'open source' product. Betwen the FAQ's and the helpfull people on the forums - you can figure out how to do just about anything.

    I never understood how the word "Shack" was supposed to convey competence with technology.

    When radio's were added to ships early in the last century - they were usually in little 'shacks' on the main deck for several reasons: Better antenna reception, and so the operator could see - to orient the antenna properly, and more importantly, to show-off to the paying passengers that the ship had a 'wireless' on board.

    He'll - the XBOX is nothing like some of the orpans I've had over the years: Arari Jaguar, NCE TurboGrafix and the Virtual Boy - those were orphans.

    We've put Phoenix on the desktop, and quick launch bars.

    We hid explorer in the Programs->Accessories->System Tools.

    And of course, you get Konqouror and Phoenix when you log into our VNC server.

    But as far as risk is concerned:

    Lthe largest risk is Outlook and Outlook Express - they use the core of IE to do their mail previews. Most of our users don't visit odd websites - but they sure could be sent a virus now and then.

    Mono [go-mono.org] is a clean-room implementation that runs natively on x86 Linux and interpreted on PPC, S390 and StrongARM.


    Mono is not .NET - it will not have Microsoft's .NET libraries.

    99.99% of all .NET applications won't run on Mono.

    Some C# programs can run on .NET and Mono - but not any appplication that uses the Microsoft .NET libraries (99.99% of them)

    Microsoft released [microsoft.com] the source to an implementation that compiles and runs on Windows, FreeBSD and MacOS 10.2.

    As per Microsoft license for this release, you can't do any comercial work with it. You can't modify it and distribute for comercial use.

    It's useless.

    Microsoft has horrible support for it's languages - they left their Pascal, Fortran, VB users without any support. FoxPRO will probably be next.

    I woulden't bet my future on .NET - not even Microsoft is releasing the next version of MS Office on .NET.

    I don't do a lick of Java or .NET programming - but I can tell you that .NET is usless for real work, on real computers.

    It's only available for x86 computers that run Windows.

    No mainframe support.
    No cluster support.
    No Solaris,Unix,*BSD,OS/2, Win95, Mac 9, Mac X, AIX, IRIX support.
    No Aplha, SPARC, PowerPC, Motoroal 68xxx suport.

    So sure, .NET may trounce Java if you want to make a Recipe-Card manager for Grandma - but if you have any heavy lifing infolved, forget it.

    * parts of the .NET language support facilities do run on other computers (C# looks like a good versoin of C for people who can't handle pointers) - but Microsoft keeps the .NET libraries close to their hearts.

    those icons aren't so different from those offered by popular window managers that run on the operating systems most favored by the crowd around here.


    Give Mandrake 9.1 a try and install it with the "Galaxy" theme unde KDE. It's darn nice - I've had a few office people come by and wonder what it was.

    (It's been darn stable for a desktop OS - but I still would recomend *BSD for servers...)

    You can also buy a current version of Windows and request a downgrade to Microsoft.

    Only if you sign up with one of theircoporate contracts. A retail copy of Windows XP can't be downgraded to Windows 3.11.

    We actually asked them to let us use Office 2000 with a Office XP licence, and they told us to sign a licencing contract or piss off. Our next upgrade will be to OpenOffice 1.2 (when that comes out in a year or two.)

    This is 1991.... we'd like our Icons back.

    Anyways... it *is* good to see OS/2 suport. I imagin that there are a few compaines that are very happy to use OS/2 and have the ability to keep deploying it - they probably have a lot of software that woulden't work on anything else.

    That's one of the best features of Free Software - you don't *have* to upgreade if you don't want to - you can keep deploying to your heart's content.

    Can you even *pay* Mirocosoft to sell you a copy of Win 3.11 ? You can't - they *force* you stay on the upgrade treadmill.

    Too many toys to change: Laptop, Sharp Zaurus, Psion Revo, Mandrake Box - and about 20 or more *BSD servers that still have a keyboard hooked up to them.

    After growing up with a TRS-80, it took me years to forget thay Shift 2 doesen't give me a quote anymore.

    And unless you're writing a novel - a good programer types suprisingly little to worry about.

    When people say Windows, they mean MS Windows, it is that simple.

    Obviously you're not a computing professional.

    I had "windows" running on a 6809 processor-based workstation before Mircosoft even had multiple prosesses in their toy OS.

    The XBox hack is stupid. If you hate MS so much that you want to use Linux, why install it on an MS machine.

    A 'hack' doesent even have a central nervous system, let alone a brain - your admonition of it's state leaves me to conclude that you same could be said of you.

    PS, I don't hate MS - they *used* to be the good guys, when a decent OS cost $1500 minimum and a decent word-processor cost $1000 - they sold their stuff for 5% of those amounts. It wasen't the best, but it was cheep.

    Now the market has caught up.

    This is similar to the editting in my opinion that Steven Speilberg did by replacing guns with bats in the special edition of ET.

    Speilberg didn;'t change the guns because of Polical Correctness(TM) - he did it because, in hindsight, he realised that real-life frederal agents don't draw guns on a bunch of little kids. (Unless threatened)

    Please excuse my ignorance, but why would I choose FreeBSD over OpenBSD?

    I use both - they both have their place. I tend to put OpenBSD on internet facing tasks(Apache, SMTP, DNS) , and FreeBSD on internal facing tasks (NFS, Samba, PostgrQL).

    The largest benifit of FreeBSD over OpenBSD is that they have the resouces to keep older versions well patched - you can pop FreeBSD on a server and know that you'll have about three years of patches waiting for you in the future. OpenBSD stops official support for instalations older than a year or so.
