As someone who truly loves my iPhone this is a great way to end a Friday, making a wish list, here goes:
    1. 3G (duh!)
    2. some clever way to cache those wi-fi username/password webpages
    3. a harder case, to avoid scratching and breaking on drops
    4. video calls (don't care if this is "iChat" or over the carrier's net)
    5. a way to fresh the web page in safari without having to scroll back to the top of the page
    6. locations aware (GPS or cell-tower location based info)
    7. sync to outlook notes
    8. other carriers!!!! / unlocked phone
    9. better 3rd party app support
    10. a iPhone nano version, cheaper, smaller, more mass market (duh! like apple isn't going to do this!!)
    11. better camera; video/sound capture
    12. a stock app that isn't 20 mins delayed (come on, can't we get past this silly 20 min delay)
    13. integration with back-end carriers mins left in plan (*646# is kind of silly)
    14. more memory
    15. ability to rearrange icon (decide what's in the dock)

and with #20, off to open a beer.

  2. hmmm on Man Wins Partial Victory In Circuit City Arrest · · Score: 1

I basically agree with the guy, but here's what I would have done differently: I would have complied with the police officer if he was right or not. Our circuit city shopper could have claimed victory against the Circuit City employee and been done with it. Sometimes it not about being 100% right, but rather being 70% right (and avoiding a lot of sh*t). I think I will try this on my next visit to Fry's or Circuit City or Costco.

  3. vista on Less Than 2 Percent of UK Companies Have Upgraded Windows · · Score: 1

When i read these stories, I have a pretty different view here: this is great news for Microsoft. They continue to have record quarters in terms of revenue and the upside for Vista is just starting. No matter what they say, organizations will eventually move from XP to Vista (and nothing else). It will take a long time just like 2000 to XP. My comments have nothing to do with my feelings about Vista usability etc. I use both a MacBook and a Vista desktop (at work)... I prefer the Mac (don't we all?).

  4. gphone or iphone on GPhone Still In the Works At Google · · Score: 1

I am sticking with my iPhone. For starters, its exists and by the time this gphone comes out Apple will have 3G anyway. Somehow I am guess Apple will do (has done) a better job than Google. Google make a great search engine, etc. but Apple gets the consumer device stuff big time. What will google do on the phone that will make it so much better than Apple? Will they somehow limit the type of local searches to keep that market to themselves (which pretty much goes against their MO). Can't wait to see how this shakes out, but I will repeat: I am stick with my iPhone, now and next version! -sammy / loving my iPhone

  5. UK on Does the UK iPhone Plan Add Up? · · Score: 1

UK citizens know how to compare. Why is this being compared against AT&T plan? This is a different carrier with different plans. Apples to Oranges, grown in different orchards. We US mobile phone owners have enough problems here figuring one plan against another (from carrier to carrier); I wouldn't want to spend my minutes (pun intended) opining on the differences in rate structures/model between the US carriers and non-US carriers, unless of course I traveled there often. A simple question to anyone that knows... can you pop out the AT&T SIM and pop in the O2 SIM if you have both plans?

  6. laws on Jobs' Next Fight — Dealing With iPhone Hackers · · Score: 1
The laws surrounding unlocking, reverse enginerring, DRM (how about that latest ringtones craziness) are confused at best and behind the curve for sure. Looks out our brilliant legislatures and you'll know why. Most laws seems to better address yesterday than tomorrow. I guess Apple best defense is to simply make it hard to do, in other words spend their energies here vs. anything legal (when it comes to unlocking).

You know what's interesting. A friend used to work at Palm, the hoops they had to go through to get a phone certified on a network was (is) amazing. Of course, even if a phone isn't approved any phone can roam (kind of makes the process silly), but I digress. So why does T-Mobile, for example, so readily accept an iPhone on its network, its not like Apple applied and jumped through the cert hoops. Inquiring idiots (like me) want to know.

  7. 30 to 40 on Inside the Third Gen iPod Nano · · Score: 1
As others have stated, this is kind of a useless factoid (last I checked Apple has a pretty big payroll, for example). In the end Apple will make between 30 to 40 points gross margin, closer to 40 on this item. Who cares? If you think they will sell a ton, buy Apple stock. If you think this is a rip off, by someone else's (lame) MP3 player and pay that manufacturer a similiar number in terms of "profit".

btw, this new iPod is quite nice, if I didn't have a new iPhone, I'd go buy one straight away.

  9. no ipod on Universal Offers iPod-Resistant Music · · Score: 1
Seems to me if music cannot be played on an iPod (I hear these files are WMA with WMA DRM) then the service that sells it has a very limited market. No news to anyone, but iPod are in use everywhere: mine can be found plugged into my ears during a workout or hanging at Starbucks or whereever, plugged into my car stereo, and plugged into my home stereo. The only other place I play music is from my PC, I guess that pretty much defines the "doesn't work with iPod" market.

  10. vista and macs on Is Apple Doing All It Can to Beat Vista? · · Score: 1
The thing about the mac vs PC arguement is that its just like politics. You are on one side or the other and no matter what the evidence, your side is always right (or left. LOL!). Or like religion, same difference. For me, its pretty simple, Microsoft dominates and about the only way to change the rules is to change the game. The Mac user experience today is only incrementally better than Vista, maybe even a lot better. But its not a game changer like the original Mac was. Remember when the original Mac came out, it was radically different, not marginally different. So Apple has to innovate massively if we are going to get a game changer, otherwise we'll be arguing who has better search, who invented transparency first, etc.

The other hope for Apple is something like the iPhone. The iPhone is a game changer in the mobile market, Apple will take this new platform up and down the market. Its big breakthrough in terms of market dominance will be down market, when kids everywhere are using an iPhone mini. The iPhone/iPod dominance will help the Mac, but really only help the Mac, with the so-called halo effect. That has already happened to some degree. People are back into Apple because of the iPod not because of the Mac, the Mac just benefits.

  11. 3G not yet on iPhone Likely Set to Launch in the UK Next Week · · Score: 1

I seriously doubt Apple with do 3G first in Europe. I suspect if they did it would put a wet blanket on US sales. Some/most US buyers would wait for the 3G model. Some have suggested that they will announce 3G and also a 3G phone. That to me makes no sense, it too close to the follow on to the original iPhone and I think Apple, with its price drop, is pretty much fixed for the Christmas selling season. I would then expect a new 3G 16GB phone in January (you know, this happens all the time with electronics, right after Christmas the newer new goodies come out).

This seems fair. No way Apple was going to refund the difference. So $100 store credit isn't bad. Its practically $100 to you, regardless of what Apple pays. I mean consider the fact that you bought an iPhone for $599 and Apple pays less, you didn't complain about this. Of course, its not like you've got yourself $100 to buy something else elsewhere. But hey you are an Apple early-adopter, so you're likely to buy something again in an Apple Store. Only disappointment is the fact that Apple didn't do this from the get go.

I totally agree with you if you are only using the iPod features. But I'm afraid this is the wave of the future for Apple... what touch does for them is avail the largest amount of real estate to a screen. Physical buttons take space and Apple wants more screen regardless of the size of the device. So I think you're going to have to live with that shift forward. Btw, does anyone know if the iPod Touch can do that neat trick and flip the screen when you tilt it? My iPhone does that in the iPod interface... but only in horizontal mode do I get cover flow... this is a real pain in the ass when I have the thing strapped to my arm while running, flipping around sometimes in cover flow mode, others times not. nuts.

I think this is a very thoughful response. I wonder with the geohot hack, how does the voicemail feature work or not on T-Mobile? It seems to me that voicemail is downloaded on Edge and place on the phone flash, awaiting the customer's random access. That would mean that AT&T did a bunch of work to make their voicemail system output and respond to a 2nd channel for requests for voicemail messages. That is the kind of software-as-a-service model that mstone is talking about.

I for one love my iPhone but would rather be on Verizon (let's see that hack!!... here we just open the box and pull out "radio", replacing it with this one I made over the summer, hehe).
