  1. I think on Attempts to Count Linux Users Remain Pointless · · Score: 1

estimates are reasonably accuarate from most studies I've seen. Linux is a very big niche right now in the OS desktop market and a lot bigger in the server market. You'll never get accurate statistics because one of the reason linux spreads so fast is it's available everywhere and can just be downloaded without hassle and a lot of different distros from a lot of different people, a very good guess is all you'll ever get.

  2. Sometimes on Google to Acquire Postini · · Score: 2, Interesting

I wonder if big companies awash with cash wouldn't be better off doing stuff themselves instead of paying ridiculous premiums. The other interesting thing is how profitable this company is and if google would've earned more buying 625 million $ of government bonds than whatever they'll make during the next few years of this.

But this isn't always the case, I remember reading "you idiots" comments after news ltd bought myspace for 300(?) million and then reading a few months later how google was paying 800(?) million for their search box and other stuff to go on myspace, that was truly mind-boggling.

It's like they feel the need to spend cash if it makes sense or not sometimes.

It makes more sense for NASA to get ripped off by some Russians than have there best engineers working on something for a few years (after testing and whatever processes it needs) that's not *as* important as probably 1000 other things they're doing.

Having said that I think the issue here is NASA should have a lot more money than it does so they can do whatever they like, scientific prowess is what differentiates the American economy from the Chinese and America will end up in the gutter if it doesn't stay on top when it comes to cutting-edge tech.

This shows the importance of a good NAT firewall. However it'd be interesting to know if the user must click allow on a lot of UAC warnings first to be compromised or it comes through clean since this is supposed to be one of the main benefits of Vista. The UAC works reasonably well for me, it's just annoying when stupid companies like ASUS ship "Vista Ready" cds in the box that have unsigned code that generate a lot of warnings.

  10. Example on Amazon S3 is Patent-Pending · · Score: 5, Interesting

Example of why patent reform cant happen. Most problems with the system could be fixed by replacing the idiots with people who wont look at this sort of obvious nonsense but these guys like Amazon have the money and a vested interest in abusing the system like this so unless overnight 100 million people make this a campaign issue it just cant happen. It's a pretty sad situation because in theory patents are a very good idea, so if some poor guy invents some amazing genuine invention he cant get usurped by big companies and can profit from his brains. Of course in practice this isn't working out so well the last decade in particular.

  11. Reliability? on Tiny Generator Runs Off Vibrations · · Score: 1

For viability in the world the important thing will be if this stays running in all conditions without a failure rate. Batteries are old technology but the one thing that keeps them in everything is that they have good reliability, a watch battery will last for years and then be thrown out into a landfill and replaced for example. It might not be good for the environment like this but it's the only option unless this can work. Still looks like fascinating technology, it'd just be interesting to know how close this is technologically to killing the advantages of batteries which the article doesn't seem to have any details on.

  12. Re:Welcome this!!! on Dell Warns of Vista Upgrade Challenges · · Score: 3, Informative

Ubuntu is a very nice OS. The problem is with stuff that doesn't work. Most stuff you buy right out of the box will work on XP and might work on Vista if you're lucky :) Of course in one year everything will probably work on Vista that you can buy off the shelf. The problem stays the same with Ubuntu that reverse-engineered drivers may or may not work. When I installed Ubuntu I had hardware that had some user-created drivers which I selected and they didn't work. Until big companies care enough to make sure all their devices ship with official drivers there's going to be problems getting the masses to look at stuff like Ubuntu.

  13. This could really hurt the ISP. on Belgian ISP Forced To Block P2P Traffic · · Score: 3, Insightful

It'll be interesting if they'll be able to sue for damages once P2P customers take their buisness elsewhere since this is being selective applied to them and not their competitors for now. Note that this is for a specific ISP so it's really making them uncompetitive. If it were applied to all ISPs then it wouldn't make a difference for the company but if their the odd one out you'd imagine they'll lose a lot of customers since in the reality of this situation a lot of people like to spend all day downloading stuff. Legally if this was applied it should be in a law that affects all isps to keep the market fair. Whether any law banning P2P which has legitimate users also is good in the first place is another question.

  14. Migration... on Dell Warns of Vista Upgrade Challenges · · Score: 5, Informative

The hidden migration problem is with multi-billion dollar companies who you'd assume would update their drivers. When I upgraded to vista I had to use xp drivers for my current model HP laserjet with a workaround I found searching on google. This is the kind of unprofessional stuff that companies wont be doing so waiting probably makes sense because a lot of equipment you can buy now brand new still has no drivers.

  15. The root problem on A Simple Plan To Defeat Dumb Patents · · Score: 1

is that not enough people are stirred up about this issue and the stakeholders who benefit from the current system are the ones who can afford to play this game. It's primarily in the interest of the "little guy" for a reformed patent system without the stupidity that does what it's intended to do... ie: protect real inventions as opposed to one click checkouts. But all these "little guys" have no money or power compared to the "big guys" like Amazon so the situation will stay the same for the forseeable future. The general population also doesn't care enough to make this an election issue.
