  2. Linux == Linux, so why does it matter on Ask Slashdot: Perceptions of Red Hat Software · · Score: 1
Linux IS linux. A distribution is just a colaboration of programs that people will want to use. I have nothing against Slackware, Debian, SuSE, or any of the other distributions, but what really pisses me off is when people start bashing a Redhat because they think it gives Linux a bad name. I've heard it all, from "Redhat needs to be called Roothat" to "Redhat is going to be the Microsoft of Linux". And to all of you who say crap like this, answer these questions:

Where would the Linux community be without the help of Redhat funding (Rasterman, Alan Cox)?

Would Dell be selling computers today with Linux preinstalled if Redhat didn't exist?

Would fortune 500 companies actually consider Linux as a viable solution if Redhat had not pushed and promoted their software in such a way that the suits take notice?

You still may not agree with any of this, but I don't really care. What matters is that Redhat is giving back to the Linux community as much as any other company or distribution. If you don't agree with me, obviously you've been watching the Star Wars trailer way too much.

Dunno about the sound...But I had the same problem with APM (running redhat 5.2). Actually its not a kernel problem, but its an inittab thing. Edit /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt. Go to the last line and change it from:
    "eval $command -d"
    to
    "eval $command -d -p"

    This fixed my APM problem.

Worked fine for me on my RH 5.2 box. But, I didn't use RPM versions of the libs and Installed them all in /usr/local. Then did:
    • export PATH=/usr/local/bin:$PATH

      export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

I know exactly what you want... A friend of mine picked me up a few of these "Linux Nameplates" at USENIX this past year. I have taken a picture of mine and put it here:http://bubba.org/powered_by_linux.jpg. This is not a crummy sticker, its a really nice nameplate that simply says, "Powered By Linux" and has a picture of a penguin. And at the bottom is a url: www.linuxresources.com. I haven't tried contacting them to see if they have any of these forsale, but I would like to get my hands on a few (they were FREE at USENIX).
