my thoughts exactly. dont bother with trying to explain this. the sad truth is that 95% of slashdot has its head too far up its ass to see any of that. you'll just get moderated down for 'being a troll' and not applying a GPL mentality to everything. but it makes me wonder, how would C.T., Hemos and gang feel if we did something like setup an automatic slashdot mirror. post slashdot's news and content at another domain. i bet theyd step down from their soapbox.
As a representative of the White Boy Funky Music Playing Society (WBFMPS), I must correct you sir. There are over 23,000 CERTIFIED Funky Music Playing White Boys.
As Chief Lead Engineer of the Funky Music Playing Certification Production Department, I can clearly assure you that there IS an ENTIRE SUB-CULTURE of Funky Music Playing White Boys. We are often-times hidden from public view, because we are just TOO Funky and Play That Funky Music too 'right'.
I assume you are a representative of the Non-White Boy Funky Music Playing Association. Have your Non-White Boy Funky Music Player people talk to my White Boy Funky Music Player people. I think it is time for a new era of Funky Music Playing.
Thank you, Jeff Zellner, Chief Lead Engineer of the Funky Music Playing Certification Production Department
The band's efforts to identify and intimidate 335,435 fans and Napster users for alleged copyright violations are a shock.
ahem... pardon me. YOU ARE STEALING THEIR MUSIC. how can you possibly justify this? answer: you cant. there is absolutely not a single valid justification. NONE.
why do you think its unjust to prosecute criminals, jon katz? or do you not consider them criminals? (im not above mp3 piracy... but i dont pretend its alright and justifiable)
STEALING music is a CRIME. CRIMINALS are punished in court. these people stole and are being prosecuted. i dont see the moral dillema or threat to my freedom as a surfer. i suppose chasing down hackers PARDON ME, CRACKERS is an invasion of privacy too. you cant punish someone... youre invading their privacy. yeah, right.
It's targets include many younger children and younger consumers who have no idea their online movements are being tracked, and who certainly have the right to pursue individual cultural interests without worring that they're being watched.
OH FORGIVE ME! i didnt mean to disturb the naive illusion you were invisible on the net. if you believe that you shouldnt be on the net. and i guess its pretty wrong to track criminals on the internet. i mean, theyre on the INTERNET and unaware they are being tracked. bullshit. what, we should make exemptions on the internet now!? ha!!
frankly... 90% of this crowd needs to GROW UP. too many dumbasses in the/. and linux community seem to apply the GPL 'mentality' to EVERYTHING. im sick of the justified stealing attitude around here... first the i-opener.
yes it was legal at first. but now it is not... it was morally wrong from the start so dont bitch about the outlawing of stealing the machine.
now mp3s another person made those. they were (99% of the time) not made to be distributed freely on the net. dont try and justify it. suck it up. you are THEIVES.
another poster made the excellent point, that jon katz wouldnt want the entirety of all his books released on the web. or would you? if you feel that is the way to go... please do so.
why are there so many doofus slashdotters these days!?
uhm... well see... last time i checked, medical machines did not spontaneously shut down with the all permeating knowledge that some crazy unused crypto algo within them had been cracked.
last time i checked there werent any major conspiracies to "hack the life support"
and last time i ran around a hospital and wreaked havoc i didnt really have to root any machines to say oh... turn them off or any thing....
then again... i havent done much looting, rampaging and killing lately... hmm...
Do you have any idea how bad of an idea that is!? Yes, we all know that hate is a Bad Thing (tm) but by even attempting to 'outlaw hate' you are creating a horrible horrible police state. Like it or not, rights are rights. Feelings and thoughts should never be restricted.
I'm an American and I'm damn proud of the fact that I can hate if i want to (not that i do). Look at the bigger picture before you make such superficial comments.
As cool as this was, It wasn't that cool for them. I don't care how you TRY to justify it, but it is stealing their hardware. They designed this with the included service in mind. So stop bitching. I mean, yeah, this whole affair gave them a lot of publicity and new business, and yeah, they didnt lose all that much money from this. But just the same, it *was* totally immoral (I was still intent on getting one though;-)). Them supporting open-source, has nothing (NOTHING) to do with people buying their hardware for a ridiculously low price...
Oh yeah! Ive got a mouse systems KB.... love it. I got it for free at compusa with a mail in rebate. In general Ergo KBs are good when the center is raised. Ones with an indented center are really unconmfortable.
maybe its that im listening to die krupps right now... but that strikes me as extremely funny for all the wrong reason... i think ill have to convince my mates to name our industrially band that
you took away my sole karma point.... boohooo..... (i dont have karma cause to get karma you have to post and to post you have to deal with everthing from elitists to petrification freaks... soo i dont post that often)
erm.... this wouldnt be pulled off on your own box... youd take over some massive machines (universities, big corporations, etc) and plant a trojan type thing to fire off packets at your target host on your command
im not saying that you specifically are the root of all evil or anything... im bringing up the issue (look up and down the board.... see anything but all these self proclaimed geek hacker types bitching about skript kiddies? thats like half the posts)
as for the dos... its the distributed/massive nature that makes this... cool... its something that is interesting.... this could NOT be pulled off with a lot of shells....
im not actually defendinng this attack however... mindless dos stuff isnt very cool or noteworthy (although the HUGE nature of it is pretty interesting/noteworthy)
im defending crackers in a global sense... not this issue... at least they could 1) have a motive and 2) claim responsibility
im pretty sick of all these HACKERS whining about 'CRACKERS' and how lame they are... they complain about them being 31337 skript kiddies, etc.... errr whose being elitist again?
hackers (or crackers to all you psychos) are just a respectable as all the true 'hackers'. true they use theyre powers for destructive purposes but they are still extremely intelligent (im ignoring the script kiddies) like-minded individuals... so give em a break.... as mentioned.... not many/.ers could pull off a huge dos over at yahoo.... so its obvious they have talent and intelligence.... note: defacers are a lot different from other destructive hackers.... dont get the wrong idea... just as 'hackers' are 'given a bad name' by 'crackers'... all the stupid kids who just want to destroy things or B.O. their friends give REAL 'crackers' a worse, undeserved name
my measly d.net stats would go through the roof with an rna box (err... cell cluster);-)
theres actually a very interesting discussion on this in applied cryptography (by the guy whose name i forget. it discusses algae used for computing (checking) keys to crack crypto... i think a cubic meter of seawater could mop up all those nasty super computers and uber-parallel monsters that lead in the stats race on d.net;-) hehe thats my plan
oh well.... he probably does have illegal stuff in there... but you cant base arguments off that.... its his personal perogative to NOT disclose whats iside there...
pleading the fifth DOES NOT MEAN that you are admitting guilt... it means there might be something that could incriminate you. if i get arrested for say... drug dealing and you plead the fifth to every question mr. cop asks YOU ARE NOT SAYING that your guilty... simply that you refuse to answer on the basis you MIGHT incriminate yourself
this is slashdot
;-)
im sure that most of the crowd is familiar with hawkings
good point though

Whats with the headline? "Fuji TV Shuts Down Iron Chef Fansites"
/. glorifies, dramatizes, and twists every story these days.
;-)
Hmm... last time I checked, forcing sites to remove copyrighted graphics and sound was quite different from forcing them to shut down.
Yeah this sucks. Fuji TV is being dumb. But on the other hand, wtf is with the headline.
I'm gonna have to start looking for news other places if this trend continues. Any fellow rebels have a suggestion?
Im SO tired of 'pirating good, metallica bad' ignorance. Don't go so fucking overboard guys!
