Yes, but if the filter was designed to alter the fingerprint (which imo is hard to impossible to do), the result will be the same in the courtroom as in the cops lab. They couldn't use funky Photoshop tools at it though.

But the question remains. If the cops wanted to frame the suspect by altering the evidence, why not plant an object with the suspects fingerprint at the scene to begin with. Or replace one piece of evidence later. Much easier than manipulating existing fingerprints in graphics software.

I was about to say "me too", but came to my senses in the very last second. I read both Greg Egan and Peter F Hamilton, I liked both. I must admit that the scales tip in Hamilton's favour, since I also agree that much of the hard SF is very little story. I would take good fiction with acceptable science over a bad story with good science, any day (Not that Egan's fiction is that bad tho...).

Yeah, SD's Gap series, closely followed by Peter F Hamilton's Night's Dawn Trilogy.

Not counting Asimov, Clarke and other "icons". Saying they are the best SF is like saying Tolkien is the best fantasy. (I am not argueing they are not, but they are too much of classics to count.

HHGTTG not counted either, that one is more humour than SF in my book (among the better ones nevertheless).

  19. Re:Awesome on SVG 1.1 Becomes W3C Proposed Recomendation · · Score: 3, Informative

    Now, hold your horses.

Saying that Gnome uses SVG extensively is an exaggeration at this point. The only use of SVG in Gnome so far, is for rendering icons on the desktop and in Nautilus. There are plans for letting other UI elements be SVG based to, but they are just plans. If you plan using SVG icons as desktop icons you also better make some PNG renderings of them too, if you want the same theme in the panel and menus, since you can't use SVG there yet.

Also, Nautilus SVG renderer seems kind of incomplete in one way or another. SVG images that works in Sodipodi, Adobe viewer, Illustrator and Mozilla SVG, renders incorrectly in Nautilus. Wrong colours, missing gradients.

And, Scalable Gorilla isn't an example, it is the only SVG theme available. A very nice looking theme though. :)

I've heard that popup blockers and tabbed browsing are making their way into IE (and MS employees can already use these features), but we'll see if they're actually integrated.

Not to troll, but did anyone except me notice how the development of IE seemed to kind of, stop... when there no longer was any competition (since after NS4.xx, and yes, Opera and Konq and some other were worthy, but not much of a threat to MS dominance). Now it seems to be speeding up again, when they have got a worthy opponent.

Microsoft should really thank the OS movement for keeping them on the edge, without competition it seems they will pretty soon stagnate.

It sounds as if it is still using the old "push-the-right-button-at-the-right-moment" controls? The thing that made these games succsessful back in the days were the jaw-dropping graphics and sounds (at the time). The gameplay was too simple imho. I can't really see the point of a remake of these games, when most games that are released today has as good, or better graphics and sound.

I's much rather have a modern remake of, for example, Ron Gilberts old adventures (Maniac mansion, Indy, Monkey Island I & II, etc.), where storytelling, humour and thinking were the main gaming elements.
