how long will it be before your wordprocessor is running on a remote machine and you just have a dumb terminal?
Probably a very long time, imho. I have heard this buzz about thin clients and "controlling the fridge from your computer" since the early 90's. Still I have not seen anyone using it or even wanting to use it.
Face it: People like their hardware too much. You will not run UT/Q3/whatever anywhere near as good on a client as on a separate computer. And what about the fridge were you thinking about controlling from the computer? The temperature? While that probably was an example, why would you need network transparency to control any hardware in your home?
Please forgive my ignorance if I am wrong in this because I am not that familiar with how mail servers operate, but...
If the cost of hosting and sending those massive amounts of mail is so big, why not amend the email server software? Most people don't need the option of sending a single mail to more than, let's say, 50 to 100 recipients. Why not set a limit? If the mail is adressed to more than 100 recipients, the mail should bounce at the server and no more harm will be caused. That way of getting around spammers would of course need all mail servers to follow the rule of "no more than 100 copies", but if we could force some kind of regulation to go with the making of mail server software?
There would probably be a lot of ways to go around this (scripts, etc.), but anything that makes the art of spamming more difficult is in my book a change for the good.
Most likely I have misunderstood some very basic concept of how email servers work (I am not in the sysadm profession, you know), but if you know better, then tell me why it would not work. No flames please.:)
The fact that dogs stem from social animals that live in packs and are very happy to obey the leader of the pack, doesn't make them any smarter than cats. Dogs intelligence also varies depending on what breed it is. That would also speak in favour of the cats being smarter, since animals tend to become dumber, the more domesticated they are. Why? Because the level of domestication gives you a hint of how long they have been able to be fed without having to get their dinner by themselves.
MS does awful things, but in this case, I'm proud of them for at least standing up.
The thing that would be really interresting to know is: How many other violations of the show rules was made by companies not competing with microsoft, that was not reported by them?
Kind of childish behaviour imho. And yes, I would have said the same thing if it was Sony that pulled the same stunt on Ms.
This is why they should sponsor the cemetaries instead. Nothing beats the look of a grand Acclaim banner saying "These resting places sponsored by Acclaim", hanging over the entrance to your local cemetary.
Should be marked "redundant". What do you think the parent meant by: "Thats one of those marketing tricks, where the purpose of the whole excercise is to get denied and get in the papers."?
I for one would not mind having some commercial on my tombstone, if the profits went to charity or my loved ones. Of course I would like to have a say in what commercial it would be, rather not Microsoft or McDonalds. Some zombie game would be pretty funny.:)
On the other hand, I would never ever consider putting on any of my relatives tombstones without their prior consent.
Well, I could agree, OSX looks really sweet to me, but: While Microsoft has monopoly (well) on the wintel OS market, Apple has monopoly on the apple software *and* hardware market. Sure, you would get your OS for "free", when buying a Mac, but upgrades still cost, iirc.
Ah, but then they would probably miss out a lot of potential users. I guess they can make more money by having a lot of users that *may* pay a small amount of money, than radically less users that are forced to pay money.
Someone at mandrakeforum.com suggested that they should make the iso's available to members only until the boxed versions hit the shelves. That sounds like a sounder strategy to me. I think many would pay to be able to dl the isos right away and not have to wait until the boxes are there.
Yes, and it is also less bloated. As a bonus, you get mouse navigation which is hard to live without, after a while. When using IE/Moz, I find myself constantly right clicking and waving the mouse to perform magic. Without success.
These arguments are getting old, but here we go...
Copying, as bad as it might be, is *not* stealing, try to get that into your minds!
When you steal something from someone, they don't have the original object anymore, you do. The poor guy from who the thing was stolen is lacking his object.
When you copy something, the guy still has got his stuff left, but you also have a *copy* of the the object. You didn't steal anything from anyone.
Now some people will start yelling: "But you stole the Programmers/Moviemakers/Artists paycheck, they don't get the money they deserve...". True. But it isn't theft. Theft would be if you broke into that artists house and stole the money he has already made from previous artistic work. Now it's not theft, but copyright infringement. Theft sounds worse and is worse, imho. The people affected will very much notice when someone steals the stuff they already have, but not as much when someone copy one of their works.
A question: would it make any difference if you wrote that "you think they are crooked" instead of "they are crooked"? In my opinion the second example could be considered slander, but the first a justified show of your own opinions.
I also think you people in us of a (and other countries) need some kind of law that would force large corporations with a lot of money to take the court expenses when suing *individuals*, until the person in question is found guilty. The way some corporations use the fact that small people can't afford expensive trials leaves a very bad taste.
But yes, you are very right. It's hard to be the judge in that particulary case, without all the facts.
Yes, that is one of the better ideas I have heard in a while.

Well, I have used Amiga, BeOS, Linux and Windows. I can not say that I missed X in any of the operative systems that did not have it.
In my experience Linux feels a lot slower than the other OS:es, independent of what graphical enviroments you are running.

Why would mr Bowman, all of a sudden, decide to assist Flo in getting into the house?

When I entered the data, I got:
Energy Released = 20 MT (MegaTons of TNT)
(Largest Nuclear Weapon: 100 MT)
QUAKE!! Magnitude 6.5 (largest recorded Earthquake: 9.5)
Crater Diameter: 900.0 meter(s)
Crater Depth: 175.0 meter(s)
A collision this large occurs roughly once every 440 years.
The most interresting part is the "440 years" part. When did such an asteroid hit earth the last time? Should I wear a steel umbrella?
well, not really.
Since the miss was a "close miss" some astronomer could probably tell you what side of earth would have been facing the asteroid if it had hit earth.
I hope it do, then maybe these mac fanatics will buy a lot of them, which will lead to cheaper boards for the rest of us. :)
Here you will find some info. Check out the history pages.

One x-window, two x-windows(!) -- See? :)

Hmmm... Admit it, you read my mind and stole my post. ;P
I was just about to use google to find that program, then I thought of something and changed my mind.

...to put some tape over K.I.T.T.'s LEDs. Wouldn't do to have some bad guys overhearing their private conversations.
Michael Knight, that is... But it is him posting, right?

Are you a man of Low Moral Fiber?
And how do you propose to do this?
Uhm..? By not giving it to MS, but putting it into scholarships, or something like that?
