Wait a minute... you're saying that ISPs are complaining because we're taking full-advantage of what we paid for? *gasp* And when their service falls on its face when something is being used that uses the majority of several thousand customer's bandwidth they'll blame the customers instead of their inability to deliver what they promise? **Double gasp!**
Oh come on! Using Vista is painful enough of a punishment!
Perhaps a better use would be on applications that could potentially harm a user's computer. I can see it now... Someone goes to install Limewire, Bonzi buddy, anything laced with DRM, adware, malware... BADWARE and an ASD relay trips and cycles power to the computer. N00b user repeats and every time the computer cycles power to protect itself from the human trying to infect it! This would be a step forward for the enemy in the future robot vs. human wars.
There is quite a difference between Aptitude (Ubuntu, Debian) and Portage (Gentoo). I ran Gentoo for a while and it seemed like every other package I got from Portage was either an Alpha or was buggy as hell. Even the versions of gcc and gtk that initially downloaded with Gentoo had bugs in them that were scary.
Since switching to Ubuntu, I haven't had nearly as many problems with unstable packages.
The simple fix is to change the client so that it never regresses (e.g., never installs software older than what it already has installed).
That's good and all until you download a bleeding edge version that is buggy as hell and want to go back to the old version.

Amen to that. I have every Star Trek episode ever made plus countless other TV shows. I had to start archiving because my 2TB array only had something like 40GB left (oops!). This from the guy who made the obligatory retro-reference grandparent post of this one.
I'm glad that we have people like Richard Branson willing to invest in a worthy cause (even though he is a goofball). I mean, he is the future Levi (As in Levi Strauss). Invest in something big now and reap the rewards of immortality later.
As for efficiency, anything that isn't run by the government is inherently more efficient because of it. It's not like companies have the financial resources of a government. Even Virgin Galactic has a finite pool of resources. They have to make-do with less to achieve the same goals as NASA.
Normally, I would agree with you in the case of common everyday outrageously marked-up crap. The only time I shop there is when some hardware is on sale that I've been wanting for a while. Every now and then I see 1TB drives on sale and set my pride aside, go to Best Buy and get treated as a dollar sign instead of a person.
A little bit of it could be fun. I mean, it is kind-of like chatroom v. 2.0 or something along those lines. But when it gets to be where you spend more time living in an imaginary dreamworld, then it's time to seek help.

I didn't say I did it. I just saw it happen in college quite a bit.
4 minutes eh? I've seen XP installs (Pre-SP1) get owned during the install process!
I have nuclear power in my area. So a Tesla would be about as clean as it gets from a greenhouse emissions standpoint.
Don't you think the Universe requires some extra protection?

Shit! In the interest of time, I would just reload the whole universe from scratch rather than hunt down that demon!
I out to patent the attachment for that is like a jacket only it traps that warm air. It's kind-of like a personal heat pump!
I used to wonder why some companies (Not NEC) still manufacture ATMs with IBM OS2 built-in. Thanks to this article, I can now see why.
Yes I understand that I was wrong there.

Why does this contest smell like that 1995 movie "Hackers" where everything was "the [item] for the 31337 Hacker"

Losing an 80 GB HD nearly broke my heart, I can't imagine what losing 1.5 TB would do...
Nearly break your balls. Or in some cases, business.
You do and I do. But does Joe Everyman really need that much space?
1.5TB... Who will ever need more than that?
Lame.
He said no Err... with his foot.
And you don't think government IS the problem with the fucked-up healthcare system? Pull your head out of the sand.

GO PRIVATE SECTOR!!
Not only that, they would think the Soviets won!

It's used for more than just SETI.
