  1. Similar problems under BeOS... on Athlon Motherboards And Chipsets Under Linux · · Score: 2

I got brand new Athlon 750 + AOpen MB. Weird things, it runs only 1/2 the speed under BeOS. Yes only 375Mhz! I've only once seen it run at full speed, perhaps I'll try every setting in the BIOS someday... Have you checked what Bogomips reports?

Since the story is getting quite old, I suspect that nobody will read this, but anyway:
What I meant was it takes a team of developers full-time working to create stuff like this. Yes, open source developers could do it, if they would get a sponsor to pay for computers/office space/pizzas/toilet papar/etc... But then wouldn't you rather work for some money?

What's wrong with people here? (well, most of them, anyway) Now, if Xbox would have been made by anybody else but Microsoft, it wouldn't get the shit it is getting here! Please, remove the Microsoft label and what do you see? A fairly powerful gaming machine using cheap but powerful stuff from Intel and nVidia. Microsoft is probably using nVidia optimized DirectX and PIII optimised cut down OS. This is a kind of system that no Open Source zealots [-1, flamebait] could hack to gether. It takes commitment and work (Read: working 8+ hrs a day, 5-6 days a week for few months) from talented and experienced people to design/program a thing like that. No matter how many pies you throw at Bill, I actually can not believe that MS HR department hire only idiots and half-wits! (Let's leave the Laywer/Marketing departments out of this, ok?) Yes, it's obviously aimed at the new Playstation, therefore the vaporware, but do you really think that the people behind this hardware had it ready just waiting for P2 to arrive ("Hey, Sony has a new Playstation, let's conjure something up to compete with it"). Maybe Microsoft should have founded "Scrim Foot" to market it? :)

  11. We need more tecnological diversity... on New, More Destructive Love Bug Variant · · Score: 5

If I may quote my favorite CEO: "Pursuing the biological simile, observers pointed out another problem caused by Microsoft's monopoly: the lack of genetic diversity in the PC ecosystem. Because PCs and their software are too similar, one noxious automaton can do much more damage than would occur if we had several alternative life forms.
This argument deserves closer examination. True, BeOS, MacOS, and Linux users were not infected by the Love virus. Had each system had 25% market share, a single virus could only infect 25% of the population."

The ILOVEYOU virus is kindergarden stuff compared to what a real programmer could really do if he/she put their mind to it, but since experienced programmers are (most of the time) fairly matured individuals, but it would only take one fairly good hacker to release a plague on the world...

I've heard theories that hunter/gatherer/early farmers "worked" few hours a day, and where are we now? 8hrs+ workdays, stress, no time with our families (remember, families used to work together, the elderly taught the younger).
Maybe this is the reason we haven't heard from other life forms, intelligence is a dead end from evolution point of view, but it's early and I havent got my caffeine fix yet, so I'm just rambling... :)
