A girl (engineering student) put at what the time seemed innocent enough page about how her lovers did in bed. On the page she posted the name and gave them stars from 0 to ***** on their performance. This list was quite long, and included members of both sexes, both singles (?) and couples. In few weeks, this list had given her national fame, and in the end ended up in the printed version of one of the newspapers. Where it was actually readable. The poor girl received mail from countless horny males, and got flamed from few. Now, I suspected that this list was fake, and in the end, after she had been abused (not physically, btw) her phone and home address posted on irc and other places, she put up a page where the whole thing is explained. The list was mostly fake, with only few real names (lovers?) and only put there for humour, probably very local. I hope that she and the people who distributed the url (I'm guilty too) will learn from this and people should always think twice about what to put on the web, and those who distribute the rumours to really think if the 'owner' of the information would want to have gazillions of people to read it. (Of course if you don't want anybody to read don't put it on the web, in the first place!);) In short, please be nice!:) Just wanted to share this with you Jón R.
For example, check out delta.is. It's a pharmaceutical company and uses Oracle database to deliver dynamic web contents from a system that I participated in developing. My current company (oracle.is) have commited in supporting Oracle on Linux, although we still use Sun Enterprises for all the heavy-duty stuff... Jón
I work in 99% oracle environment, and I'm very excited to see what this could bring us. Right now our choice of enterprise-class system for Oracle DBs are Sun Enterprise servers. Expensive, but real workhorses. If RedHat can make "optimized for Oracle" Linux system, I would have to give Linux x86 box a serious look as a cheaper alternative to the Sun boxes, without loosing too much performance. Good news! I knew it! I've always said that those tie-wearing, hair-moussed, suspenders-wearing, armani-wearing, wannabe's on Wall Street where as brights as plants. There is my proof! :
Think BeOS, OS/2, *BSD. BeOS has already benefitted (is that a word?) from Open Source. Large part of BeOS drivers are open soruce, either from Be or third party. Just my 2c.
Remember, there are only handful of glass tube makers in the world. (Philips, Nec, Mitshubishi, Sony) Other manufactures just buy the tube from them and put their own electronics and case around them...

It's no big secret that Windows NT isn't an easy operating system to set up and configure (although it's miles ahead of Linux, OS/2, or even BeOS)" For the first time as a BeOS user, I'm truly insulted! I'll challenge any NT guru to set up NT faster than I set up BeOS! My personal record: 7 minutes 35 seconds from putting BeOS R4.5 CD in the tray until surfing the net! Eat my shorts, Jason! Jón
The Inmates Are Running the Asylum by Alan Cooper says it all. Go and read it! It very nicely summarizes what is wrong with this industry, and has some good ideas how to fix them. J.
That was the first thing popped into my mind. (For those who don't know what I'm talking about, shame on you, go to your local video store and rent the movie!)
People here need an attidute change, reading the posts here make that obvious. "He should have used Red Hat" Not relevant, the poor sod was trying to install Linux, what the heck should he care about this or that distributions? "A novice computer user should not be trying to install an OS" Why not? Obviously, a novice user open-minded enough to try to install alternative OS should been encouraged. "The strangest thing is that for an accomplished websurfer, a 404 error should be no big deal." Excuse me sir? The documentation was plain wrong! Is it too much to ask for have it correct? Linux is difficult to install, (so is Windows, but let's not sink to their level, shall we?):), but I think there intelligent and clever people out there that can (and will) fix it. Maybe Linus and Alan and others should take a deep breath and look at Linux from end user perspectvie, instead of figuring out what cool feature should be put in the next kernel release. I do want alternative to Windows, although a BeOS user myself, I think right now Linux has the momemtum to become a viable alternative to Windows, but this is one of the things that needs to be tackled. At least until we get Linux pre-loaded on 20% of new PC's:)
What is this? Good software (BTW, I'm guessing it's good, haven't looked at it myself) makes it to the Linux platform and you take it as a bad thing? Fine, just go and lock your self in your 'Free' ivory tower, while the rest of us can choose.
"Some, like me, would use a freedom platform even if it wasn't popular, and would use freedom software even if it wasn't as good as a proprietary alternative in terms of convenience or performance or other measures. How about you?" "Freedom platform"? WTF? I think you are taking this Free Software (as in speech) thing way too seriously! I use both, I prefer free (beer, speech) software, but IF there is a better "proprietary" (has this word becoming a cursing?) software that I think is worth it, I pay for it. Please people, support Free Software, but let's not get carried away, there is room (and need) for both!
I can't see the point with the badges? Security? Are they afraid that some outsider would sneak into biology class? Access to restricted areas? Why not use keycards? I can't se any feature of this system that makes it mandadory for a) use the SSN, b) have badges instead of cards. I guess the school authoroties (sp?) are just abusing their power. (Temptation that many people fall into)
Well, I'm sorry sir, but I have to disagree strongly. Freedom is not "free". When you move out of your parents house, you have your freedom, but all of a sudden you are on your own. Freedom brings responabilaty, for your self, at least. (hmm.. bad example):)
Maybe I'm just Neo-romantic utopian, freedom does not give you (you, as in anybody) rights to violate other people freedom. (sounds a bit catch22 problem)
Many "Freedom" advocates don't get it. With freedom comes responsibility. They just cry "Freedom, Freedom" and just go ahead and abuse their freedom. Freedom to senslessly spam/junk mail their fellow man, freedom to tout guns all over the place, freedom to misuse capital to squash the little guy/competitor. Freedom does not mean that you can just do whatever you like! Freedom means that you are responsible enough to know yourself what you can or may do. These people make freedom just another f-word, imho. It's a sad, sad, thing. Jón
I can see it now: David Attenborugh in a hushed voice in Slashdot HQ: "It is here that the slashdot newssite is created. These busy creatures spend all day looking over code, and reading tons of electronic mail and surfing the web trying to find the next newsworthy item." (Creeps over to an open fridge) "As we can see, the dietary habits of these animals are very simple, consisting mostly of carbohydred sugar-water and stale old pizzas... J.
Try BeOS; Hacking clever tricks on standard graphics hardware, BeOS allows that (BDirectWindow API). Really efficient, draws to screen quickly. Clean, fun API. (Or you could try DirectX+W98 *run* *hide*)
