  1. Re:Wrong way, go back on Motorola's Sholes Bootloader Unlocked · · Score: 1

Ever tried to access the air-bag controller on your car? Ever flashed your ECU and then expect the manufacturer to cover the consequences? Ever bought software that was reliant on a hardware dongle? Ever bought a large dedicated device (like a specialist microscope) that comes with some ancient MacOS version on the controller PC that you can never touch or upgrade without voiding the whole setup? What about trying to make a replacement RF car door opener for your car? Or tap into the security systems to code your own keys? Or break the radio's security code so you can install it in a car other than your own?

With the exception of the software/dongle, those are all parts. If I buy a device, I expect full control over the device's main functionality. The purpose of a car is to drive somewhere; I can drive my car anywhere. The purpose of a microscope is to look at things; I can look at whatever I want. The purpose of a smartphone is to make calls and run software; I can only do one of those freely.

Oh come on. How do you go from "criminally liable for not vaccinating kids" to "death penalty for allowing cross-racial dating"? It's a slippery slope, but it's not frictionless...

I can go the other way, too. You spanked your child? 5 years jail. You decided your child was bad, and beat him harshly? How dare you! What do you mean you sexually abused your child?

Oh wait. Those things are already illegal. And I doubt you're upset with that, either. Last I checked, it's the parents' job to protect the child too. Obviously there's a limit to that, but vaccines? How can you not hold the parent liable when the child dies due to the parents' gullibility?

Sure. Everything has bugs now and then. Adobe Reader has so many that they added a sandbox. We're just starting to do that with web browsers, and they're supposed to run "programs" of a sort. We're always reading about some new PDF code execution problem. You're not seriously claiming PNG and MP3 have as many exploits as PDF...?
