Actually this anouncement was preceded by one strenghtening the existing anti-piracy laws (HADOPI). Currently, sites that stream movies or music without a license are of course illegal, but it is not illegal for a user to access these sites. The new law proposes the prosecution of internet users who visit such sites, and/or setting up a national blocking mechanism.
The problem is that these types of issues are very rarely discussed in France. Forget the national TV stations for obvious reasons, but even anti-Sarkozy or left leaning sites and newspapers rarely cover such topics prominently.
Nevermind that the Lybians *asked* for NATO involvement, that it was supported by the Arab League, and that no soldiers were sent. Besides, it was mostly the Europeans that flew the missions.
As far as considering Hugo Chavez a "prominent intellectual"... just wow.
Funny you should say that, some of the biggest stoners I've met were rednecks.
When it comes down to it, pot really doesn't know any cultural or economic boundaries. In my travels, I've seen dirt poor rednecks out in the middle of nowhere passing joints to preppy ivy-league students taking huge bong hits, and everything else in between.
There are two things I have noticed though : * Age : Anyone born after 1950 has a higher chance of having smoked pot, maybe about half of those born after 1970 have tried it at least once. * Drug screening : People that get tested on a regular basis for their job are much, much less likely to smoke pot, due to THC being detectable in urine for a long time. They sometimes compensate by being alcoholics and/or cocaine users (ie airline pilots).
And you fail at reading comprehension. The GP never said that there has been 30 years of libertarianism. Rather that we have 30 years of data to show that libertarians are wrong thinking that the free market can regulate itself.
I disagree.
We have at least 300 years of evidence showing that libertarians are wrong.
This plan isn't drastic, it's irresponsible. Drastic would be cutting back on the military in a meaningful way and drastically lowering health care costs. Why? Because that would actually make a difference in the deficit. And I agree, no "electable" politician has shown the ability or desire to do this.
But depriving taxpayers of valuable services, which are actually pretty cheap given all the advantages they bring, for no real gain is just... stupid and irresponsible.
You want a car analogy ? This is like making a race car lighter by removing the steering wheel and brake pedal.
Expensive and useless toy for rich people like... the first cars, the first motor boats and the first airplanes. Give it a few years. We'll all be driving electric cars soon enough.
"I have no problem bombing someone else in a far off land if it keeps me safe here. And it has worked...how many terrorist attacks have there been on US soil in the past decade?"
There have been 30 terrorist attacks and plots in the Unites States after the war in Afghanistan started (October 2001 - present). Not counting 9/11, there were only 10 incidents between 1990 and 2001.
A threefold increase in attacks and attempted attacks is not my definition of increased safety for American citizens.
I take it you have never heard of this little thing called ITER? The plan is to create a working fusion power plant, one that gives off more energy than is required to maintain the reaction. This is theoretically possible, but has yet to be achieved. We shall see in about 10 years whether they actually get it to work.
Since the US is one of the partners in the project, presumably there will be technology transfers (there are several partners, including Russia and China). The US is also conducting its own experiment, the NIF, which uses lasers instead of ITER's magnets to contain the plasma. Since that facility is already built, it's possible they will achieve 1 Q before ITER does.
In any case, none of these government funded efforts, even if more successful than planned, are intended for commercialization. It will be at least 20-30 years before the first commercial plants go online, in a best case scenario. Probably 50 years is more realistic, unless there is an incredible breakthrough. So we still need renewables and fission to ween us off fossil fuels until that time.
Yes, we've all seen the great job that private security companies have done in maintaining high standards of ethical conduct and transparency over the years. From Pinkerton to KBR and Xe, these are exactly the types of people I would like to be groping me at the airport.
In Red Rackham's Treasure, Haddock's ancestor lived on an island and "taught" the parrots his particular manner of cursing. The parrots keep on repeating the words through the generations, the joke being that as Haddock is walking through the forest he gets insulted by the parrots in the manner of his ancestor. The comic is from the 1940's.
The article mentions that some birds do imitate human sounds that are no longer heard, as learned by their ancestors and passed on. Presumably Hergé had heard of this happening.
Part of the reason so many civilians were killed is because the insurgents would hide from and attack US troops from civilian buildings such as houses, buildings, mosques, schools, hospitals, etc... And in many cases civilians actively helped the insurgents. So of course any legitimate retaliation by US troops would injure and kill civilians.
Now, I don't mean to defend some of the truly cowardly, crimes against humanity type of actions which were perpetrated by American forces, but it's too easy to entirely blame them. You need to look at the tactics the enemy was and is using as well. As opposed to many (most ?) resistance movements, the insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan have absolutely no qualms in sacrificing and murdering civilians for their aims, and in fact pursue this avenue as one of their main strategies.
Having said that, I think that "liberator" and "conqueror" are as close as "terrorist" and "freedom fighter". Having video games show a more nuanced view of reality would certainly do some good in the world, as opposed to the binary "us vs them" attitude that is so prevalent. For me at least, it also makes a game infinitely more interesting.
Washington DC was also built according to a rational urban plan, at least initially. In fact much more so than Paris, which was only slightly rearranged after 1500 years of unorganized building.
"Patent pending means the patent has been filed but not yet granted. If anything in this case first-to-file would protect the little guy, the big corp can't say they invented the idea first but filed for it afterwards.
We're finally living in the future : "Iranian cyber-agents have compromised the secure communications link of Western Powers, partly as an effort to monitor activities of their own cyber-citizens and also as retaliation for an earlier Trojan horse computer virus attack which destroyed Iranian nuclear processing equipment".
Flying cars and Linux on the desktop anytime now !
For your 50 km commute, you would've charged your car at home overnight. The Leaf has over 100 km range, so this is enough for your round trip. Eventually, as more and more businesses start adding charging stations to their parking areas, you could also recharge while at work. I fail to see the problem.
Hopefully the other DBs get on board with this, especially MongoDB and Cassandra, which at the moment seem to be the most advanced and stable. At least that in the future it would be much easier to test and/or migrate from one NoSQL DB to another. Easier options are a good thing !
For example, we've been looking into using a NoSQL solution for storing certain elements of our web application. Unfortunately, it's hard to test the advantages and disadvantages of each without rewriting the connection and logic code. Writing some sort of custom wrapper just for basic testing seems like a huge waste of time and a likely source of errors.

Jesus was a Jew ... not an Arab, and not black. Also, there is no such thing as an 'Arab black', it's like saying a 'Han Chinese white'.

"Can we have controlled plagues, and population-breaks? Please?!"
Yeah. We'll start with you and your family.
And you fail at reading comprehension. The GP never said that there has been 30 years of libertarianism. Rather that we have 30 years of data to show that libertarians are wrong thinking that the free market can regulate itself.

You forgot raising taxes.

Your sarcasm detector is a little off there, but thanks for the alphabet soup.
Somewhere, our common ancestor is weeping.
$3000? How about $2000 for a brand new Tata Nano ?

Woman has been saying that for years.
I thought I was replying to the GP, oops ! No sarcasm intented.
