Like people with jobs that require them to drive? So a bus driver gets a pass when they chat with their spouse all day on their personal cell but the guy that has an outside sales gig and so by definition is on the road most of the day has to park every time he wants to take a business call?
Some people don't like drinking so should there be no alcohol too? How about no beef, wouldn't want to offend the hindus in the crowd, of course can't have pork either because the jews and muslims would be offended. People spend way too much time being offended by what other people chose to do rather than spending their time fixing the problems in their own life. It's just way too easy to point the finger at someone else and tell them they need to fix their behavior than to actually have to work to change your own.
but you shouldn't need to apologize for doing something that both those that choosed to partake presumably enjoyed and that is legal. Sorry if it offends you but bite me.
does the wording of the post sound like a computer geek trying to explain science. So you have this dense storage medium and the bus that runs through it to compile components that ultimately get displayed as proteins.
A longer school year tends to be better for the poor and minorities. Kids from poor households (which of course often overlaps with kids from minority households) tend to forget a lot more during the summer break than rich kids. The reason seems to be that middle and upper class kids do stuff during the summer, go to science camp, play organized sports etc, where as the poor households can't afford that so the kid does no learning during the summer.
The post is kind of miss leading too, saying that Singapore and Japan have shorter school hours even though longer school years. True, but then in Japan it is common to do extra tutoring after hours, or take english classes etc. The official school day might be 6 hours, but it is likely that the kid is in fact spending more like 8-10 hours a day in some form of teaching environment.
In my experience the US education system is quite behind other countries. For example I did a physics degree in Canada. UC Berkley came by to recruit students into there masters program (definitely not a low end school for physics grad work), turns out as undergrads we had taken as many courses as they required for a masters there. They said things like: "so you've taken 2 quantum mechanics courses, a mathematical physics course, a couple electromagnetism courses. We go from there and teach you more..." We replied no we've taken 3 quantum courses (with an optional 4th), 2 math phys, 4 electro, etc. Then we also had required nuclear, and most had taken other courses in physics as electives that we got to choose but had to be physics (eg. I did fluid mechanics, general relativity, particle physics and an advanced computational physics course (a introductory course was required for the degree)).
Yes but how many Americans would have figured out "they called 999/000"? It doesn't stop the fact that it is a very regional specific code. It would be similar to saying "the phone wasn't broken he just forgot to dial 410 before the rest of the number" because everyone knows that is Baltimore. Anyways 999/911/000 are all better examples than in my neck of the woods. At least in my area of Germany they have different 3 number codes depending on if you want fire, police or medical. You don't want to call the wrong one because Germans are almost as litigious as Americans.
corporations were more sensitive to regional preferences? What if companies respected laws as reflecting regional morals rather than lobbying with all their power for whatever is best for them?
Dude you don't have a terabyte connection yet? One could argue that cars haven't changed that much in 50 years either. They still have 4 wheels, still use gas and oil, stearing system is essentially the same etc. For the most part we've just replaced manual parts with computer controlled parts (which enables for example on demand 4WD, ABS etc). Anyways, once a problem has been "solved" with a technology it seems that technology changes slowly. We just need to find some new things that we just have to have to get the new technology. I vote for an electric accordian: it would possibly make Oktoberfest music less annoying.
Sorry my bad I somehow thought that murder was on the list of 1M offenses. Sorry please disregard murderer and instead child rapist, arsonist, kidnapper etc.
Just admit that he was presumed guilty before a trial you incompetent fools.
My understanding is that bail isn't meant to be punitive (after all the accused hasn't been convicted yet), just sufficient to ensure that they will show up for court. Larger crimes don't have larger bail because the cases are more important, but because the sentences associated with a conviction are larger so there is a larger incentive to skip out on your trial. So is he likely to get five times the sentence of a murderer? Heck I'd be surprised if after the appeals process if he even gets more than time served and a fine. Of course how much of his life and money will have been pissed away in jail and given to lawyers will be anyone's guess.
The funny thing is I don't get why the "year of the desktop" is needed. I mean you take a UNIX like OS and judge it based on desktop market penetration? Why wouldn't you judge it based on how it replaces uses of UNIX which tend to be server and workstation uses? There it has done extremely well.
Anyways, IMHO Linux might have accidentally landed on the more important platform, mobile computing, not to mention "cloud" services. Desktop is becoming less and less important and that is the only place that Linux hasn't done well at.
I'm the same way. I'm a UNIX admin but use a Mac laptop. Apple's not perfect but having a UNIX like backend while still being able to get versions of commercial software for the most part or just dual boot is good for me. Some UI features are just more polished and useful on the Mac than on Win or Linux IMHO. That said I think OS X also simplifies away some of the features I'd like exposed in the GUI. Mhh, nothings perfect, arguing about OSs sometimes is as rational as arguing about which sports car or candy bar is the best, its just a matter of opinion for the most part no one is right they just like something better.
They are "just" packaging the kernel, selecting all the utilities they want to include and the version of the desktop. But the thing is the kernel hits new, interesting and stable releases relatively infrequently, same with the desktops. So the packagers have to wait for versions of the parts to come out that are worthwhile to push an upgrade on users.
I think both companies would like to pretend that they are the only ones that offer good online play. As soon as you say connects to PS3 people will say, oh I can play online with a PS3 too, hmm maybe I should buy that console instead. I think the XBox definitely has the superior brand when it comes to online gaming, its available and customers know it is. Too bad you have to pay for it:-)
For some linux users it isn't so much an operating system as a compile daily to see the new changes kind of mind set:-) Great OS that is rock solid, until you get the mindset of building everything from non-release grade source for the "must have" latest feature. Windows shoots you in the foot for you, Linux its a skill you have to develop;-)
that every company feels that every time they show a group of customers it has to be "diverse". For example the pic from the article: asian man, black man, white woman. Wow I guess MS doesn't have any white men using their products, and here I thought that was the majority in IT. Who knew. Anyways seems stupid to go out of your way to create artificial diversity.
Well I suppose you could use diplomacy/embargo. Either you work to clean up the data coming out of your country or we will firewall internet traffic originating from your country.
Office blows on a Mac. My understanding it is because MS outsourced the GUI development and the outsourcer's blew goats. It is very slow to load (15 seconds to open Excel on my Core 2 Duo 2.0 MacBook Pro), and isn't contained in one window you have the format bar as a separate window, edit pane etc, nothing is really 'docked'. They also did away with VBA in one of the versions which can, depending on how the company uses office be a deal breaker.
Also, people might just prefer the Mail app that comes with the Mac. Office costs a lot more than $29 and wouldn't get you the finder and general speed improvements. In the past why people didn't go the Entourage route? Not sure. Probably the usual IT argument that it is another platform to support and their techs would have to be retrained, maybe there software push apps don't work with Mac etc.
My work is a research institute so people are quite happy to use whatever they like best and at least some of them can do it themselves. About 70% of our systems are Mac, we do discourage windows but if people need it they can get it. Heck I even had one guy go and install Services for Unix on his windows box because he was more comfortable scripting on UNIX but needed windows for his app:-) Not saying our user base is normal (most places don't have a workforce that is 100% university grads, 50% PhD's), but still cool to see.
How do you verify that they had the hormone therapy in sufficient quantity for the two years? I'm not sure if the doctors inject these people each time they need it or if they do it themselves. If they miss a estrogen pill/injection once in a while on purpose then it could leave some maleness in them.
I had a girlfriend that had a growth hormone insufficiency and was given the drugs to inject herself when she was 10 or so, so I suspect the same would be true for a fully grown transgender person.
Oh, and scrollable stacks and thumbnails will be handy too, after you have 20 or so apps installed you can't view all of them in a current stack, being able to scroll/change "pages" would be useful.

then grows. In a few hours it bursts from your chest, then the fun begins.

I thought it was Australia's emergency services number.
You never know when you'll have to paint a picture or explain the rules of table tennis. Those too are important subjects.
Because the most powerful Thetans like Trovolta and Cruise are too busy making bad movies?

we get it already Linux is used everywhere for all sorts of computing needs. Why is this news in 2009?
