    (note: looking at how obvious the submitter tries to start a distro-war, it doesn't take to much cleverness to lure the editors)

    I really wish Slashdot would start moderation on articles too, then this would be dismissed as Flamebait fast enough.

    Maybe the steep steps as a result of using integers are a little misleading, but I think the main idea of this scale is informing the public with a single number between 0 and 10, to indicate severity of the impact.

    After all, a not-so-certain probability of a really really big rock is just as scaring/bad as a somewhat more certain impact of a small rock.
    The real engineers at NASA etc. wil surely use just both numbers (probability and energy) instead of that silly number.

    Then, when I get prosecuted, I'll say I can only afford $1 in my defense, which would result in the DA's obligation not to spend more than $1 for the case.

    And $1 is not enough to by the shovel to dig up the body.

    Could someone enlighten us with the respective advantages in terms of bandwidth?

    Television (coax) uses 40Mhz-800Mhz, so I would say coax would have enough bandwidth to go from the customers house to the CO at the end of the street, from which cable companies have enough fiber already.
    What is the advantage of making that last couple of meters also fiber?

    Indeed...

    DDR = Deutsche Demokratische Republik (yeah right!) aka East Germany
    BRD = Bundesrepublik Deutschland (federal republic of Germany) aka West Germany

    I hope this DDR (the RAM) will do better than the other DDR, which is no longer.

    Hmm, patents used to protect IP and force other competitors to come up with own ideas!

    Icon? Logged in as root?

    Do those two imply that people not only actually log in as root (which you shouldn't, you should use "su" or "su -" if you need the environment), but even run a whole X session as root?

    Even if root permissions is neccessary for installing packages or mounting CDs, wouldn't it be better to put that one admin user in group "admin" or "wheel" and make kpackage suid?

    For those who are wondering: vmware cannot do NFS:PU either, because although you can install DirectX7, the vmware graphics "adapter" is not capable of handling DX acceleration.

    Unreal Tournament runs perfectly in vmware, tho.
    (for sufficiently small (read low framerates) values of perfect)

    I noted that part of the humor in your post about the "surver".

    What you probably missed is that if you change your sig, all generated pages (i.e. all comments) will display the new sig. Check your posts now.

    I really thought you had no clue that you can also post at +1 instead of +2 and were (unnecessarily for a change..) bashing Slashdot. I don't see the reason to post a not-so-funny comment with speelingerror at +2 and then complain about it.

    I wonder how I can get rid of the metamod link.

    I once followed a link that brought me to /metamod.pl but now every now and then I get asked for that page. I'd like to see an option in the preferences "Not interested in metamoderation".

    I am interested in moderation tho.

    M2 just isn't interesting, in the last couple of months I've only "Unfair"-d *one* moderation...
    (yes I do metamoderate, only to get rid of that stupid line on top of the mainpage)

    I think I've seen about 20 articles on the Cuecat so far. One thing I don't get.

    Why is it that "my" community is always there when it comes to ruining legitimate businesses? As soon as some company comes up with a neat device and accompanying businessmodel (I-Opener, Cuecat), there's a whole bunch of geeks that are ready to ruin the company by finding all kinds of little loopholes in some law.

    What would you do if you were a company and saw your product ruined by a couple of kiddies who obviously never had anything to do with running a business before? Sit there and watch your dollars go down the drain?

    I'm not saying you are doing the wrong thing, after all, there's this subarticle in some subsection of some USPO law that says you're in your right, but imagine Amazon finding some loophole in some law that enables them to ruin other people's businesses, would you agree with Amazon? Or would you despise this company?

    Why is it always that "we" are right and "them companies" are wrong when it comes to finding smart ways to do business or break other people's businesses.

    There goes my karma, but I had to say it.

    OK. I'm European, and I wouldn't mind getting an H1B at all. I'll read the terms, including the one that says that the govt. can change the terms at will, and I'll agree with them.

    And have a great time in the US and make more money than I would make back home.

    And isn't there someting like applying for permanent status after you've been in the US for a while? Could someone enlighten me?
