    And the answer is not far at all... Just wait for these orders to finally arrive and people try to get support for them... Dell got a lot of flaming over outsourcing support to India -- OLPC outsourced it to the even worse-trained rural teachers, etc. There'll be more horror-stories -- watch this place.

    You may be correct about our current technology for battling viruses, yet imagine if we start getting RNAi's to target viruses if they improve where they can deliver the siRNAs. Also they could use LNA's to knock out these viruses.

    I still posit that some obesity is related to a virus (sure call me a quack) yet if a virus could decrease our metabolism by 10%, it would have a wide ranging implication.

    IANAL but rewriting the code doesn't do anything. I remember Bruce Perens and others asking anyone who looked at the stolen MS code not to contribute to Open Source Software.

    The only bigger waste of time of rewriting the source code is reading /.

    I believe things are by default in the public domain, unless someone has Copyrighted it.

    1) Use IMAP to retrieve all the email from their server or better yet have your legal department insert the clause "Microsoft will provide all email to us upon request" into your legal agreement.

    2) How much is it worth to your campus to have internal email when the internet outages happen? I would be guessing the bean counters would not think it was worth the IT support, hardware support, etc. Would 200K annually be a low ball park guess?

    One word: Commonsense. If Google isn't hurting Microsoft with their web apps why worry about vaporware?

    Cisco closes Brazilian plant, hundreds of jobs lost.

    The job losses won't be as severe as the sentence of maintaining the digital third world status.

    The real story is that Brazil has the ridiculous import taxes. I love Brazil and want to see it become "The Country of the Future." However, until Brazil invests in technology and eliminates the 40% impost tax. They better just plan on being the land of samba, coffee and beaches.

    For most companies, linux is too small of market to be worth devoting development time to. As companies follow in IBM's and AMD's footsteps, though, I think linux support will continue to increase, but I doubt it will ever match Windows and OS X levels.

    My prediction is that the desktop will start to die off. It will be more hand held devices that plug into docking stations. If Apple had a great docking station for my iPhone, I wouldn't need a laptop for personal use; just for programming.

    For this reason, I think Windows is going to die. It's too big and bloated. If Nokia's iPhone knockoff runs on linux, you are going to increase the number of linux users. Imagine if there is a GPhone as well.

    We have a middle class because we're not efficient. But what happens when you have more supply than demand for products? It's the 70's all over again.

    Not everyone is above average and to be honest if you paid people according to their value, 20% or fewer coders would have 80% or more of the money. But who can afford to pay for their products?
