  1. What about new codecs? on Examining the HTML 5 Video Codec Debate · · Score: 1

Do we really want to lock it in to a particular codec now? Newer and better audio/video codecs are released more frequently than new versions of the HTML spec.

  2. Why do away with desktop reader? on Lost Gmail Emails and the Future of Web Apps · · Score: 1

    > Will it ever be possible to do away with desktop solutions like Outlook and Thunderbird?

Why bother? I use Google's Application for your Domains for my e-mail, however, I prefer using Thunderbird with Google's Pop & SMTP interface over the web interface. I only use the web interface when I need to search through my e-mail archive.

In addition, this filtering is Opt In on the part of the customer. Thus if you don't explicity ask to have your service filtered, then there is no change.

The only real problem to this law is the increased costs on the part of the ISPs (which will, of course, be passed on to their customers)

  4. Tiger Files on Open Maps? · · Score: 5, Informative

Take another look at the Tiger Files, they really are one of the best sources of data you can use. In fact, I have found that the tiger files are even more accurate than MapQuest for rural Utah towns. (However, MapQuest has them beat for more populous areas.)

Not only do the files include streets, but it also covers bodies of water, railways, etc.. You can even retrieve additional information such as school districts and voting districts, which you can overlay on your maps.

Along with the files, you can download a 300 page PDF document fully detailing all the table structures and how to interpret the data.

Don't discount them just because it will take a bit of work to figure them out.

My 6 year old daughter presented me with my long lost black handled phillips head screwdriver. She gave my two sons my mechanical pencils.

When I was about 12 my sister (who was 5) gave me a chewed up pencil. When everyone laughed my mom got mad and told us not to laugh as this was one of her treasures. My sister's reply to this was, "No it isn't"

    >> What would you personally do with $1100 dollars? Would you spend it so you can have the potential of spending another $1400 and monthly fees to get more bandwidth than you would ever need right now?

Yes, I would. This isn't an issue of having more bandwidth than I need right now, it's an issue of having the bandwidth availiable when I need it.

I used to live in a rural utah town, that had absolutely no broadband options for years after DSL and Cable started becoming common so I know first hand how frustrating it is to need more bandwidth but not be able to get it.

I now live in Orem, Utah (near Provo) so am quite excited about this project as it means that a few years down the road when I actually need more bandwidth it will be available to me.

From my understanding, they are providing the backbone, but then allowing 3rd party ISPs to provide service. Much like Qwest does now. If this is the case, then they will actually be helping the mom and pop ISPs.

    >> You got Comcast too??

Actually, I've been nothing but pleased with Comcast. I used to pay $50 a month for 640/256 Kb/s from Qwest, and now I pay $55 a month for 1.7/256 Mb/s from Comcast. In my area I actually get the full 1.7 Mb/s 99% of the time as well.

For me at least Comcast's service has been far prefereable to DSL.

Not all of us have iPods. While I do love the design of iPods, I purchased an RCA Lyra 2840 instead as it is nearly as small and I was able to get a 40 GB model for substantially less than a 40 GB iPod would cost.

I have checked out iTunes, and like it quite a bit but the inability to easily move music I purchase on to my Lyra makes the service useless for me.

  14. Difference between UK and US on Junkyard Wars Nominated For Emmy · · Score: 1

I just wanted to post to clear up a few misconceptions about Junkyard Wars. First off the reason some are U.K. and some are U.S. is because seasons 1-3 were in the U.K. Only the last season (season 4) was U.S. I don't know whether or not there will be any more U.K. versions, but hopefully there will be more U.S. Also the female host Cathy Rodgers is actually the shows creator and producer. According to the Junkyard Wars website she was inspired after watching the scene in Apollo 13 where the astronauts had to build an air filter after junk that was lying around the space shuttle. Another interesting thing to note is the british co-host Robert Llewellyn was Kryton on Red Dwarf. Hope that clears some things up.
