  1. LEGO'S !!! on Classic Toys For Christmas? · · Score: 0

Plain and simple. I eventually plan on turning a room into my house to build and construct with legos. It's a nice small, time consuming hobby that I never grew out of!

  2. One thing to think about .. on Advice on Becoming an Independent Contractor? · · Score: 0

Is that you actually end up working harder when you work for yourself than when you work for a business. You have a set time schedule that hopefully keeps most people from pestering you after hours. When you're working for yourself, especially in any IT flavor, you can be expected to be hassled at anytime day or night. You're server could go down for your personal clients, and its not something that can wait until 8am to get fixed.

This is just a small potion as well. Like other people have said, contracts, quoting people, doing taxes will take even more time as well! Work for someone, find something fun, work your way through life by networking, and eventually you can consult if thats really what you'd want at that point.

I couldn't even imagine where I am now 5 years ago, thats life, so live it, and let it take you places you've never been!

  3. Work4Less on Recent Grads and Experience Beyond the Desktop? · · Score: 0

It all depends on your attitude in life here. I agree with most people posting, find job, anyjob and work your way up. Unfortunately, experience in the field as well as a good degree will barely get you in the door still. You need to be willing to work for less, and work your way up in life.

I attribute to my suvival of the tech boom to working for less, and eventually, you'll work your way to true sucess, and plus you've learned many a lesson on the way, and can respect a higher-paid position and what it took to get there. Good luck!

  4. Multiple Software Packages on How Do You Manage Requests in Your Organization? · · Score: 0

While used primarily in lawfirms, there is a software called TimeMatters which logs all calls, emails, meetings, etc, by contact. Or, you could also invest some serious cash (doesn't seem to be an issue working at a bank) in OMD. It manages open tickets, and thye remain open, organized by priorities, time, urgency, etc. Just my few cents.

  5. Why are they Buying this Crap? on Cisco to Acquire Linksys · · Score: 0

This is a weird story. Why is Cisco buying into the crappy LinkSys market? It'll be interesting to see what twist Cisco has up their cleeves for LinkSys. Cheaper, but higher quality networking products? Who knows!

  6. OpenBSD Secure? on OpenBSD: Hackers Meet Soldiers · · Score: 1, Troll

    BSD is Bad Ass!

  7. Dumb Computer Users on Viruses: More Hype than Danger? · · Score: 0

I would have to disagree with most people here in their view of the majority of PC users as dumb. Thats not the case.

Most people are un-aware whats involved when it comes to virii and av software. For the average home user, they'd like to be able to turn on their machine, check email, browse, etc.

When something like a virus comes along, in their email, or what not, they havent had much exposure to that before. Most people will inadvertently open an attachment, or even click on it, which in some cases will start the virus automatically.

Once they get infected, and their normal operations get upset, someone has to fix it. After all the times I have fixed machines for people, almost everyone then understands the implications of getting a virus. They are more knowledgable about the problems that they can cause, and will work hard to keep updated with their av definitions, etc.

It's not that most users are idiots, just the majority of them havent experienced these problems before, and dont have the level of understanding that most of us do.

Once something happens, its less likely to happen again.

  9. It Makes Me Sick. That's a Terrible Article. on The Laid-off Techie · · Score: 0

Many workers got the ax when mass layoffs peaked in the summer and fall of 2001, and they coasted on several months of severance and unemployment insurance, which generally lasts six months. With the tech job market still in the doldrums, they're now considering new gigs as waitresses, bartenders, forklift drivers or baby sitters--anything to pay the rent.

They make it seem that doing anything other than tech work is the pits. I for one, work as a technican, Network, during the day, and Waiter at night. I don't appreciate having my choice of jobs classifieds as 'anything to pay the rent'. There are many hard working americans who are proud of their jobs, babysitting, bartending, operating a forklift, and without them, where would we be. Instead of whining and moaning, get off your @$$, and do something about it. Don't complain about your job, while you can say that you have one.

    Errrrr.

  10. How to Calculate Actual Cost on How Much Do Computer Virus Attacks Really Cost? · · Score: 1

It would have to include a number of factors, wouldn't it? Im sure man-hours would the prime cost, some physical cost for damaged chips, etc. But I still dont see where they could generate such a large number from a small, though viable, computer virus. First Post? :-P

  11. thats great on Serial ATA 1.0 Draft Released · · Score: 2

Now all the motherboards need is support for more than 4 ide devices. Has anyone seen some of the nice gigabyte boards that are being produced? Its nice to finally have support for more devices. Now if they made these boards to support the new standards, I would be in heaven.

  12. ColdFusion is Damn Cool on 4 Web Scripting Languages Compared · · Score: 1

  13. Unfathomable on The Puzzle of Martian Meteorites · · Score: 1

Thats quite a story. It could steer all known practices right out the window. I've always wondered how they can base assumptions of ages, without knowing if their calculations could be err'd in some way. Wouldn't it be cool if Mars had suddenly appeared just a couple of hundred million years ago. How do you explain that? Ok, Im rabmling, and I really dont have anything relevant to say except I can not wait to see how this develops. Im just waiting for some scientists to start backtracking to cover any misconceptions of carbon-dating that they might have. L8tr

  14. Sounds Interesting on Orbitsville · · Score: 1

It sounds like an intersting book. But I wonder which avenue it follows more. Does the book focus more on the interactions between society and this man, or rather his exploration of this new planet for colonization. All in all, it looks to be a good read, now if I could only get my hands on a copy! :-P

  15. Games for the Playstation 2 on Sony Playstation 2 North America Launch · · Score: 1

I remember reading a little while back about the continuance on the Final Fantasy Saga for Playstation 2. They were going to release a 9th one, the final one, for the regular Playstation, and then they had already lined up two more of the series for the Playstation 2. They had a screen shot up before of another game, in such high detail, it was incredible. I can hardly wait to see what they'll be able to do with this new machine.

  17. 'Bout Time on The BSA Going After IRC Warez Channels · · Score: 1

Well, it's about time they realized that IRC is a huge median for pirating/trading, etc. It's too unfortunate though that are trying to crack down on chat rooms. Reading the article on the BSA cracking down, I guess they have already slapped some suits on a few members of the #warez4cable room. But even if they were to suceed and clear IRC of anything illegal, there are so many medians available. I bet they would go to trading via ICQ or some other IM.
