    To say that a website is not mission critical is dismissive of online companies such as Amazon, or the fact that online ordering and purchasing should have transactional capabilites, and triggers in their DB. For sites who seriously want to be involved in the ECommerce, you might need a bigger DB then mySQL. mySQL is great for storing/serving content, but adoption of mySQL for large ECommerce sites should be considered carefully.

    I have a Panasonic DVD player that also plays CDs and VCDs and it does not support CD-Rs. I don't think it's a global conspiracy, just a manufacturing decision...

    Good point, but I think that if discussion does not begin the minute you say that you will leave, then don't go through the other steps of showing them other's interest in you.
    If you show that you are looking for another job, and you have companies interested in you, your loyalty will be called into question from that point on if you stay after saying you'll leave.

    Every year at tax time, we have a guy on the radio that tells us that we can pay $0 in income tax by exploiting similar loopholes.
    He says that you can prove that you didn't make any profit (ie You're not a corporation, and can't make a profit, and all the money you made you need to live) you don't have to pay taxes.
    The tax code sucks, so who cares if they don't pay it?

    The American Home Recording Act goes further to say that the number of people you distribute to does not matter. The problem with the RIAA is not a matter of law, but of changing technology, the same way that the Movie Studios cried when the VCR was first released because it would hurt their sales....

    Sure Slashdot and Thinkgeek have an affiliation, so they will point you there, but reading here just a little bit you'll know that the staff at the Geek Compound does not look kindly on Amazon with their myriad of stupid patents...

    I have such good intentions to learn more about Python, and I have it installed on all my systems, but between my jobs desire for me to learn more DHTML and my own amazement that I can do everything I need in Perl already, I just haven't devoted the time....

    that a lot of these appliances sell with an ISP contract as part of the deal, and it's a lot harder to require the buyer to use an ISP if their connecting the appliance to their existing DSL or Cable Modem.

    Actually, the rest of the article that was cut off went on to say that they were field-testing the device over at the TKE House determining if the beer had gone skunk, but the editors of the article didn't think that that sounded professional enough.

    Having to use W2K at work, which also denies direct access to DOS, I have to say that it is tons more stable now, and hasn't crashed but once in 4 months of use, and that is miles ahead of where Windows used to be.

    Steve Richards speaks well. I have Netscape 4.73, Netscape 6, Mozilla Seamonkey, IE 5.5, and Opera on my browser, and whenever I use style sheets and javascript, the only browser that gets close to doing what the documentation says it should is IE.

    While we're complaining about non-standard introductions to browsers, let's not forget Netscape's Javascript style sheets and the layer tag that they are trying to bury....

    which of course would be Phantom Menace 2, and that sounds pretty damh cool!

    Having worked on several projects at different companies I believe that almost every product is born in chaos, especially towards the end of the development cycle. I would think the measure of whether or not something should be trusted is if the coding follows a standard, and is tested rigorously by users till it breaks so it can be fixed.

    If you read the patent Description, the first line reads:

    This invention relates to an information handling system in which information is derived from a computer at a remote point and transmitted via the public telephone network to terminal apparatus. The invention also includes the terminal apparatus itself.

    which means that the patent also includes the computer to access thishyperlinking ability. Specifically it relates to a cathode-ray tube
    terminal responding to keystrokes. I would think that hyperlinks in web docs are alright therefore, of course, IANAL....

    IANMAP, but quantum physics says that a particle can have many states at once, but when you look at it, it 'picks' or falls into only one state. so the quote seems backwards to me.
