  1. 3 year alienware Aurora owner here... on Ask Slashdot: Buy Or Build a High End Gaming PC? · · Score: 1

    Build.

Having bought an Alienware Aurora R4 in 2012 I've found it to be a good machine, but not without consistent issues. Keyboard/mouse died. Video card died. Other random quirks like randomly not booting for a week (thought the MB died, but then just started working after being unplugged for several days), one weird windows issues that i suspect was a combination of hardware/software. etc...

I had built many systems prior but thought I'd splurge and try an Alienware to get everything in a single box.

For the Alienware machine I bought, which included a monitor and nice Bose speakers, I got a "good deal" via my employer's partner discount, speaking with financing at the right time who dropped the price further by opting for interest free financing vs. credit card (paid in full before interest kicked in). But it still worked out to be 1.5 - 2x the amount I would have paid for a self-build with better quality parts.

Dell bundles and scrimps where they can so the no-name accessories and components will not be the same as if you bought direct from EVGA/ASUS/Gigabyte in my opinion.

Perhaps the only benefit of a high-end alienware is the default watercooling setup (which does not cover the video card mind you) and the potentially comprehensive warranty, but if you are considering build vs. buy the warranty is not worth much anyway.

This is ridiculous and not worthy of any publication, let alone the NYT (and should not be propagated on slashdot, imho).

In short, the Higgs boson (if theories are correct) is a scalar that provides mass to all particles. That means it is present at all times everywhere. So, although it is tongue in cheek, we are swimming in an invisible soup of Higgs particles at each moment. To say that universe doesn't want us to create one is like saying people are born blind because the universe didn't want us to experience light.

  8. How do they intend to power $1 billion... on Apple Plans $1 Billion iDataCenter · · Score: 1

I bet the coal industry has a serious erection from this project. Given the amount of power even super-efficient server farms draw (let alone billion dollar ones), where does Apple expect to get its electricity to run this monstrosity? I am no expert in the area, but I can't imagine they have much in the way of hydro electric or a large renewable infrastructure (unless Apple intends to build one), so most likely they will rely on coal as their primary source which is a huge problem.

Forgive me for not RTFA, but why would they target such a historically sensitive location? I can imagine that lunar mapping isn't yet pixel perfect, and it is a known site that is suitable for landing, but why there?

Does anyone know any good reasons why this must be their target (other than perhaps marketing)?

  13. Bikram Hot Yoga! on How Do Geeks Exercise? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I do many kinds of exercise (biking, weights, cardio, regular yoga etc.) and have been physically active for many, many years. By far the most effective and pleasing exercise available is Bikram Hot Yoga. It's growing in popularity, so there should be a studio near to you.

The routine is carefully designed to work from the inside out, top to bottom, and to increase flexibility, strength, and circulation. Almost any ailment you may have will be addressed - its hard to oversell the benefits as it engages the entire body.

If you google 'hot yoga' or 'bikram' and your area I am sure you can find classes. However, not all hot yoga is Bikram (I have also tried Moksha, for example), but the Bikram routine I find far superior. I would strongly recommend it for everyone as it sheds weight, strengthens muscles, and improves joints considerably.

  15. Re:All things considered... on Floating Cities On Venus · · Score: 1

Yes, you were right. I just wrote that off the top of my head. Venus does not in fact have a significant magnetic field (I was mistaken in thinking it had a molten dynamo like Earth, but it does not) and its day is about 224 earth-days long. So, some significant challenges. But a dense atmosphere and .9 gravity remain attractive assets for a potential human habitable planet to posses.

  16. All things considered... on Floating Cities On Venus · · Score: 4, Interesting

I think if humans are going to one day seriously consider terraforming other bodies in the solar system (we've already been doing that to our own for about 12,000 yrs) we ought to start long term terraformation on Venus as soon as possible.

Venus, although nearly identical in gravity, size and distance from the sun to Earth, does not contain any native water and has severe atmospheric issues. Mars, has water and serious atmospheric issues (such as insufficient gravity to retain one) and no magnetic field.

To successfully transform Venus would require first to construct large scale reflectors to reduce the sunlight reaching Venus thus cooling it down, implement a process to sequester the excess carbon in the atmospher, direct large numbers of comets at Venus to introduce sufficient water and then seed the planet with simple anaerobic biotic life to begin to oxygenate the atmosphere. Of course these are outstanding complex and far-future possibilities, but not impossible so far as I know.

In the long run (thousands of years or even tens of thousands), I speculate Venus will likely be Earth II to a greater extent that mars will; it may take Venus a bit longer to become habitable, but once it does payoff in quality of environment would be significant. All the more incentive to encourage twin terraforming endeavors rather than simply focus on Mars.
