  2. Re:Ask me again... on Will Next-Gen Consoles Kill Off PC Gaming? · · Score: 1

Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of having a console, though? Once you get a bunch of different upgrades, a lot of the complications of PC programming start coming back. Consoles aren't meant to be upgraded. They're meant to be a simple, pure-gaming, plug-and-play experience.

  3. Re:Its all about availability. on Will Next-Gen Consoles Kill Off PC Gaming? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Someone needs to write a unique and really great game that is only available for Linux.

Commercial companies would never do that, as they'd be shooting themselves in the foot profit-wise, and most private games won't stand up to the quality or scope of commercial games.

Granted, simple games can be really great, but they're also easily copied and aren't likely to convert anybody in the first place.

  4. NO NO NO. on Will Next-Gen Consoles Kill Off PC Gaming? · · Score: 1

This question comes about with every new generation of consoles, and the answer is always no, for a few reasons:

    1) Most fundamentally, many PC gamers don't like a lot of console-style games, and vice-versa. If you've seen an argument between PC-RPG and Console-RPG people, you'd know this.

    2) There will always be a segment of people who say "Well, I already have a computer, so why pay more money for a console?". Likewise, there will always be people who will say "Well, I can get a console for $300, but a gaming computer's video card costs that much...". This may eventually be blurred when game consoles get PC functions, but until people can browse the internet, write and print papers, use photo editing software, etc on their consoles, there's always going to be something separating the two.

    3) Many PC games require a keyboard/mouse to control well (the RTS genre in particular is a lot more difficult without a mouse), and although you MAY be able to get a KB/Mouse for your console, most people won't.

    4) PC technology progresses while consoles are stuck in "generations". Sure, these new consoles might be on par with today's top-end consumer gaming machines, but what about 3 years down the line?

    5) Modding. PC games are (in general) far more moddable than console games. .. and, well, there's more, but this has been gone over a million times already. Console gaming is not going to kill off PC gaming. Likewise, PC gaming will not kill off console gaming.

They're doing it in NAPERVILLE, a well-off suburb of Chicago with nearly 150,000 people, its own private college (which has a KILLER track team), a huge stadium where the Chicago soccer team has its games, and which was rated in 2003 as the best place in the midwest to live. This isn't some town in the middle of nowhere with no money, and I have absolutely no doubt that it will be implemented there.

    1) Series is not available outside of Japan.
    2) Internet and fansubbing make series available outside of Japan.
    3) Fansubs build series' popularity.
    4) Publishers see demand and release series worldwide, seeing huge amounts of sale from fans they never would have had before.
    5) Profit.

This works out extremely well for the developer, who doesn't need to spend money advertising, and gets a large amount of revenue they wouldn't have seen before.

On the flipside, maybe this is another reason the RIAA/MPAA are afraid of P2P and the internet in general - it allows content from other parts of the world (that they do not necessarily control) to come over here and become popular.

I visit Amazon MANY times a day, have bought many hundreds of items between them, and verify a lot of pricing that many other people have seen. Never once have I seen a discrepancy between what someone else has seen and what I (or anyone else) sees. I've heard that a couple people may or may not have seen different prices on a few DVDs when Amazon was doing price testing, but the reason for that didn't have anything to do with the consumers themselves, but just because Amazon wanted to see what price people would buy things at. They do change their prices quite often, but I've never seen a difference from person to person besides the aforementioned price testing - if one person saw it, everybody saw it. If you have any proof of this, I'd be very interested.

Dell is a different story because Dell SB and Dell Home price their items as though they're completely unrelated. Even if they DID give SB customers lower prices on purpose (and note, they aren't always cheaper), though, companies have been giving businesses lower prices forever. If you're a landscaper, chances are you can get a discount at landscape shops. Businesses can get hookups at computer parts companies to buy things for cheaper. Offering different prices to businesses as opposed to the consumer price is a pretty standard practice that has been going on for much longer than e-commerce has been around.

The difference between business pricing and consumer pricing isn't what the article is talking about, though. They're talking about a difference from consumer to consumer just because one person has shopped there before or not.

I'll go with a brand/merchant I've used before even if they are priced a bit higher, if I feel I got good service, because I'd rather deal with a known quantity.

Sites like Reseller Ratings makes shopping at stores you haven't shopped at before a lot more "known", though. That combined with other sites dedicated to saving money on your purchases makes it very easy for people to get the best deals on things from sites that are known to be reliable.

It makes sense that they wouldn't want to try and target these informed consumers. The informed ones are flighty and much harder to make any money off of since they'll only buy from you if you already have the best price (meaning less of a profit for you). The companies place a lot more worth in getting a clueless customer who will keep coming back despite what their price is.

  12. Re:Does this happen much? on Online Shoppers Naive About Online Prices · · Score: 1

This is talking about something completely different, though. Dell SB and Dell Home are pretty much run separately, so any deals in one do not carry over to the other. A lot of the times Dell Home is less expensive as well with all the coupon codes they send out (just a few weeks ago the 20" 2005FPW LCd was around $350).

Either way, though, that's not what the article is talking about - what they're saying is that given the same product on the same page on the same site, two different consumers may see two different prices. Knowing of different discounts is one thing, but I have never noticed that to be the case. The only time I've ever even heard of something like that is when Amazon does "periodic price testing" on some items (usually media), and even though I'm on Amazon many times daily, I've never noticed this.
