Hmmm, that is a very good point. Assuming those objects have a hysteresis curve like any non-permanent magnet you would have to be careful about how you put them together. Maybe there is a way they can "wind" the strands around a core to negate any potential field problems, kind of like how interleaving windings on an inductor can help with copper loss. All things considered, sounds like a fun experiment!
I would think it would be a limitation of the test size. If it's like any other electrical device, we should be able to stack a WHOLE bunch of them in series to create larger voltages. I really hope this goes somewhere, a lot of what is holding us back from implementing more renewable energy sources is the fact that we have no efficient (cost efficient mostly) way of storing the energy.
Ballmer should worry less about "Fucking Eric Schmidt" and more about making quality software. Even if they do succeed in tearing apart the competition (namely Yahoo), can they really afford Windows 7 to turn out like Vista?
P.S. this is not a Vista jab, merely a question/observation.
Did anyone go to blue jeans cable website? I don't care if they charge less for an HDMI however 30 dollars is still WAY to much for a 6ft cable in my opinion. I got my 6ft hdmi cables on amazon for $3 and they kick ass. Screw Blue Jeans Cable, they're still trying to rip you off, just not as much.
Linux has come a long way from when you last used it. There are certainly those distros out there that require all of that nonsense you were talking about but there are others (Ubuntu to name one) which require very little work to get everything running. I was very surprised since I last installed Ubuntu (I think I last did 6.xx, and I recently installed 7.10) it is SO much easier than it was before. I feel as if the OS is finally at a point, with drivers and such, that things just work. I suggest you give it a try, it is a far cry from what it used to be, and it's only getting better IMHO.
I got my LCD tv from compusa. It was one of there floor models so I got it for dirt cheap, and unfortunately I also got a warranty with them to replace it if it ever goes bad. This sucks, maybe my tv will have to get to know Mr. Wirecutter really soon...
Since there were so many comments on this one I didn't really know where to put this. But I think we're all referring to two types of people. On the one side we have people who are merely looking for an entertainment system, "play my dvd's! COD 4 kicks ass! web shopping!!! ZOMG!!" (Hah, they're funny). On the other side we have those who want more of a hobby than entertainment can offer. I personally would rather have a PC because the upgrading, un-installing, re-installing, drivers, PROBLEMS... so on and so forth are more than half the fun of owning a PC. No matter how frustrating it is to fix them, it's half the fun. I'm not trying to make a point of whether I am better than a console owner, or all web shoppers shout ZOMG at the top of there lungs, I'm just trying to make a point that the two systems often give pleasure to two totally different people.
As far as gaming goes, and which system is better for it that's certainly a tough call. I like consoles for the "strategic button mashers", games like Ninja Gaiden and God of War, however I think PC's are much more suited for RTS games because of the mouse and keyboard. FPS's are a crap shoot, i feel as if the mouse is MUCH more accurate, but playing a game with a friend on a console is MUCH more fun. MMORGP's are really only on PC's right now (as far as I know of at least) so you can't compare there. And then of course there are the games that only come out on some consoles or PC and not on the other.
I bet as we head down the road we will see many more office apps on consoles as well as the integration of a mouse and keyboard (the controller will never die, or I'll have my way with whoever had a hand in it). PC's however will always be around for the "hard-core" users like me and of course the UBER/.ers who might read this and laugh at me.
I've been thinking about the speed of sound in an interstellar medium too, but I think it means that the solar wind (or particles or what have you) are traveling faster than the vibrations caused by it can propagate. Maybe? The whole "Speed of sound" label is throwing me off.
vista will replace XP just as XP replaced 2K, it will just take a bit of time. Very true, but can it happen faster than MS wants to get another OS out the door?
You can have the most secure prison in the world, but if someone leaves the keys in the lock it's all for nothing.
I completely agree, but why the hell would you give the keys to any old person who walks into the prison? You can agrue now that you should just turn off admin privileges and you can no longer run into this sort of problem, but how many people who use Windows know how to do that, not only that but how many people do you think know that it is even possible? I like Linux because (at least in the distros I have installed and used) you aren't admin to begin with, and being a Linux noob it was a pain to figure out how to become root and do various things. This hopefully prevents the "idiot user" from destroying anything and if they try to figure out how to become root they get plenty (in my case at least) of warnings of why they need to be VERY careful. Just my two cents anyway.
Thank you for an honest reply. Lazy was definitely the wrong word to use in my post above. I actually do enjoy going into the terminal and learning as much as I can about linux. I guess I find the same satisfaction and would compare it to reformatting my computer and installing the OS again. I like the problems that arise, and there is nothing better than solving those problems and knowing that I did it. Anyway, I guess I just needed someone to kick me in the ass. I'm really not sure why I keep on going back to XP, familiarity i guess, that and the games of course. I guess I can dual boot to keep XP, I certainly have enough space for all of it. Anyway, thanks pillbender.
HAHA and this is why I have stayed away from linux, thanks for the help AC. Instead of any helpful comments to maybe get me started I'm criticized for my lack of understanding and called "ignorant and dumb."
Compared to some (most) of you guys here I'm just a noob when it comes to computers. Now I have been around them ever since I was 3 (I'm 21 now) and I know my way around one, and I know a good bit about the hardware side (I'm majoring in EE at the moment). However, I've never had any interest at all in trying to "tweak" my system as far as the software and whatever else you can do with it goes. This is why I've never gotten into linux, there is simply too much to worry about and do if I want one thing to work. For instance (and maybe its different now) installing the nvidia display drivers is always a pain in my ass. All i want to do is run an installer and let it do its thing with MINIMAL input from my end. But in linux I have to shutdown the graphical shell (or whatever it is) change configuration files, make sure my kernel is updated, blah blah blah etc. etc. That's way to much shit that i EVER want to deal with. Keep in mind also that 80% of the population is the same way. As the parent post said, I JUST WANT IT TO WORK. To me ease of use the the single most important thing, which overrides any trust issues I have with Microsoft. I hate Microsoft for my own reasons, but unfortunately (for me anyways) I will continue to use their OS (not Vista, but XP Pro) until I can find something else that is just as easy.
Lastly, I would love it if anyone here had some great guides for linux, something that could really get me going with it. I would LOVE to switch to linux, but with all the games I have, and my laziness, it just doesn't seem like the logical choice at the moment.
I can certainly see how you can be proud of someone standing up for the system in place, we need people like this because there are plenty of people trying to steer us down the wrong path. However, in the case of recorded music, I believe it's obvious to see that times have changed. It appears that hard-copies of media is becoming obsolete and because of the internet I think there could be a profitable and well founded system that would make everyone happy.
I also believe that CD prices are outrageous, there's no way that one CD should cost 15-20 dollars. If you don't believe me why do you think Apple can get away with selling a song for 99 cents and sometimes less? I still think that much for a song is crazy but its a step in the right direction. As much as I enjoy watching Cribs or some other show that displays the wealth of some performers it still pisses me off to think that they can make that much money.
Back to the standing up for the system thing. Like I said, I think it's good that people stand up for the system in place, but when they do it illegally and act like a damn mafia, that's when it becomes shameful to think that people in this country can get away with it all because they have a little money (or a lot in this case).
I may be the only one who at 10 knew he wanted to be an electrical engineer of some kind. However the idea that all kids know what they want to do is absurd. How about an option? Either continue with your general education or choose to specialize in one area. This seems to be the case in most schools though if a previous post WAY up there is correct (I don't know, I went to private school, so I'm not much up-to-date on public school curriculum. Should I even be commenting on this?). In conclusion, no matter where you go to school, it blows, get over it.
While this does sound like a good idea, to weaken the apparent strangle hold the broadcasting companies have on the FCC, I'm just not sure if I really want MS to loosen that grip. After all, what's better? Letting MS control the FCC or the broadcast companies? I guess it's a start though.

lol. seriously.
Sarcasm is obviously not your strong point

So can I sue Samsung or whomever for doing the same thing? Or is this different?

Thats the whole point. At least I can do research to fix the problem (which is half the fun anyway).

Has the world finally succumb to this madness!?! When will the injustice to gamers be put to an end!?!
I don't believe you're counting the RIAA on this bit of opinion are you?
