I ran into a similar problem recently myself. I needed to create a small site where only a few of the pages needed CMS functionality. Only the owners of the site would be updating the content. I looked into Joomla! and Drupal as well as a handful of others but they all just seemed like too much for what I was trying to accomplish. By the time you dig through them and then finally get them skinned they way you want you might as well have just written your own (which is what I ended up doing).
Has anyone else run into this? All I really needed was some sort of CMS-lite that just provides a framework for authentication, forms based data manipulation, and (obviously) skinnable data presentation. In the past I've even tried using MediaWiki for but skinning that thing to get the layout I wanted turned into a real hassle.
News has always been supported by advertising. Television, radio, print - they all use ads for revenue. Sure, some papers cost money but that more or less only helps to pay for the cost of printing. Subscriptions only exist to make getting the paper more convenient and as a way for the company to tell advertisers that "this many people will definitely be seeing your ad".
On the net, distribution is much cheaper and tracking how many people have been to the site is trivial. Charging people to view your site will drive down traffic thereby devaluing your site in the eyes of advertisers. Google has already set the precedent, why don't other people get it?
Step 1: Get content people want.
Step 2: Get consistent traffic.
Step 3: ??
Step 4: Profit from ads on a site with a lot of traffic.
Senators and Representatives. There you go, it doesn't get much simpler than that.

Yeah, it's not like he can officially condone this behavior and expect to win a suit that's based around his support of the hacking community. I say hack on. That way he's demonstrated that he doesn't support the hacking, you've demonstrated that he has no control over you, and maybe these people will learn to quit hassling file sharers.
A wiki is perfect for this. You can write simple step-by-step instructions for the more experienced techs. Within those you can easily integrate links explaining processes and terminology that aren't understood by the new guys. You also get the free benefit of searchable change tracking. You're not going to get that from a text file or a visio document.
And here I thought the 1 screw I had to unscrew to get at my laptop's hard drive was inconvenient. Don't even get me started on the little piece of plastic that I have to slide to release my battery. What a hassle. Macs really are better! I'm switching now! If only they'd made that information part of their marketing campaign... I could have switched years ago! ~
I don't understand the push toward web applications where it's not necessary. Obviously the main advantage of a web app is that it's much easier to roll out in a corporate environment. I've never used a web app that performed better than its desktop equivalent. Not in response time, not in convenience and, with a few exceptions, not in features. In the case of IDEs - does anyone really want this? I've been developing through VPN on a virtual machine and the repaint on that has been bad enough. If I were using a web app I think I'd lose my mind. Also, I'd be waiting for the next browser update to break it and prevent me from doing any development.
I agree. It makes the Troll mod on the GP that much more annoying. Windows is attacked because the vast majority of desktops are windows machines. When a different OS supplants it and it's worth the black hatters' time they'll switch to the new OS.
The federal government does it - Google might as well get in on the action too. Of course, Google money will be subsidized with small text-based ads relevant to your spending habits.
On the other hand... I don't think anyone in England felt that anyone within the country was responsible for the V2 rockets flying in their direction from France. Fighting a war with a known enemy is quite a bit different than the "war on terror" we've chosen to wage with the entire planet. I'm not saying I agree with the steps we've taken, I'm just saying that the events that have led up to it have been significantly different.
Well that explains the number of FPS maps involving containers. Apparently I was just running amok in a datacenter / carnival generator storage facility. Who knew?
I'm no aviation expert... but it seems to me that at those speeds that bird would just get sliced into many chicken-wire-hole sized pieces and still go through the engine. On the plus side "chicken" nuggets would be fresh for the next flight! Watch out for the beak!
Oh yeah, you're right, that's even better. Instead of having AOL crapware browser 9000 and whatever else in addition to IE. We'll now see PCs come with just the AOL crapware browser. That will make web design really fun because a fair number of people will be too lazy to get anything else. I can't wait for the web browser to be just another piece of crapware that comes with an OEM machine. Great.
Redundant? On the second post? He's got a valid point guys. It's the same reason people use whatever anti-virus software came preinstalled and whatever word-processor came preinstalled. They're going to use those programs for the same reason they bought a $500 computer in the first place - it's good enough to do what they want to do.

You don't get free hookers with your services? I'd say you're getting screwed but you obviously are not... Get a better contract negotiator next time!

Oh, those scientists are just lazy. Google modeled the entire earth. They've even got the ocean now. Someone tell those scientists to get to work. ~

What're we talking about?
if only NASA had sent a homeless fellow with some newspaper...
It looks like you're trying to renew your existing car insurance. Would you like to save 10% by switching to Geico?

Yeah, we wouldn't want money just disappearing would we!? We'd better make sure those untrustworthy Cambridge people return every cent!

Dogs would be useful but it'd be a lot more fun if we could get a pterodactyl out there hunting the birds.

Or Dick Cheney. He enjoys shooting unwitting animals in the back. Even without Cheney a shotgun and some dogs are still pretty effective.
Sadly, no. Just getting tired of having to work around the moderation instead of treating it like a useful tool for deciding which posts to read.
