Seriously! Retail ultimate purchasers got ripped off. All this talk of "ultimate extras" turned out to be garbage. I've got ultimate and all of the extras are crap. Oh wow, a sound pack! Neat, because there aren't tons of those floating around the 'net already for free. Wow, thanks Microsoft!
I understand the Unix viewpoint... the only trouble is that Unix is almost always setup in an environment where the admin really is a network admin. With Windows it's the opposite. The "admin" is your little brother. He read on some forum how to create a new account for himself or how to add himself to the admin group and so he did. Now he has unfettered access to everything but no idea what to do with it. Microsoft is trying to protect those types of users from themselves. Whether or not they should is another topic... Personally, it drives me completely insane.
Exactly... Mac users have basically been trained to think that it's normal for you to have to replace all of your software when you upgrade to the newest version of the OS. PC users would lose their minds if this happened. I was furious when I ran into a few niche programs that weren't Vista compatible and expected me to buy a new version. Needless to say, those companies lost my business.
Cloning installs has always been a partial train wreck... even with XP. For some reason some hardware just "doesn't like it". I've rarely seen it work. I don't really see it as a Vista problem.
My work recently gave me a cloned XP machine and SQL Server would not install. I've installed SQL Server countless times and I'd never seen the errors I was getting before. Before that I had tried running Windows Update and I got a warning saying that some of my OS files weren't right. Finally I just gave up and rebuilt the machine with a fresh XP install and SQL installed the first time and windows update worked perfectly.
In fact, I'd get rid of the list of installed apps as it seems to be pretty rubbish, no hierarchy or fly-out menus, just a simplified explorer listview in a not-intuitive default sort order.
There's a hierarchy, that's why you can click on folders and expand them. Also, I'd say that alphabetical order is pretty intuitive... There are no flyouts because those just got ridiculous in XP.
As is Task Manager - which is pretty, but just a monitoring tool now, not the 'emergency' system button it used to be.
You've lost me here, how is Task Manager no longer effective at doing what it did before? You can still kill processes and you can actually find the process associated with an application - which is nice. You can still run new programs from the Task Manager. They just added enhanced monitoring tools on top of the existing functionality.
BTX is a far superior mobo layout for air cooled cases. The only reason it didn't end up usurping ATX is because manufacturers didn't want to spend the money to support the new form factor.
I was actually confused by that when I first saw the headline. I didn't even know that the government could patent something. It's just so completely broken and silly that I never even considered it.
It looks like they still charge the same as most places (full retail game). Although they do appear to also offer rentals. They say they charge 1/5th of the game's price per hour until you own it. In some cases they'll also do weekend / overnight rentals.
Even though part of what you said is obvious hyperbole, I do agree that we've long since passed the time where we needed to start cracking down on this sort of thing. At the moment it's nearly a free for all. You contact the authorities and they almost laugh. Either they don't feel that you've been taken for enough money or they just don't think pursuing it is worth their time. Can we stop the drug war for a few minutes and focus on this instead? I'd rather see 100 identity thieves in jail than 100 teenagers that like to smoke pot - it's not my problem if they smoke themselves stupid.
No... the summary is just wrong. What they meant was
An RIAA spokesman is quoted as saying that the litigation campaign has been "successful in raising the public's awareness that RIAA is composed entirely of douches."
I've had a similar experience. When I decided I wanted to make myself a small home file server I just took an old 3GHz P4 and put it into a new case with a big hard drive cage. Add a SATA card and a couple terabyte drives and I've got a nice Gigabit NAS setup with a much faster processor / RAM than anything you're going to get in a consumer level NAS. Best of all, I only had to spend money on the hard drives and the SATA card. Everything was already laying around.
My experience was similar. It was very comprehensive and nothing was left out. Abstinence was encouraged but it was by no means the only thing that was taught. I've always been baffled by this talk of abstinence only teaching. I suppose that's just because I've never even known anyone that had it. Can anyone attest to the fact that this is even being done or is this all just FUD?
Hadn't you heard? All of the eHarmony rejects get automatically redirected here. The Taco is trying to help us nerds out. Fortunately, you don't have to be a sociopath to be rejected; it just means you don't fit their mold.
They also fall into the "quick fix" category. Everything has to be fixed immediately and nothing can ever actually be anyone's fault. If you're on drugs you're getting fixed quickly and your depression isn't your fault, you've just got a chemical imbalance.
I feel the same way about parents dragging their kids off to be diagnosed with ADD. Try pulling them away from the TV and the pure sugar juice box and making them run around outside a bit. It's easier to focus when you're not constantly on a sugar high and looking for a way to burn some energy. I feel sorry for those kids... once you get categorized with that kinda of crap teachers practically act like you're special ed. Some of my friends really got screwed by that.
I keep hearing this... who doesn't have sex ed? I had freaking tons of sex ed when I was in middle school / high school (late 90's). Anyone that got preggo at my school was just plain stupid... either that or too lazy to show up to the one class that they apparently really needed.
Even better in the event of a zombie apocalypse! Just make sure you've got a zombie plan. You can't just assume that you'll be able to keep them out. If one gets in, you've got to be ready.
1) Because then people would buy XP instead of Vista.
2) You can buy XP - here

Me too... I stuck with win2k a long time... I didn't switch until I needed to brush up XP for desktop support.

this isn't the world, it's slashdot.

Oh that's next year!? YES! I'm going to hit up thinkgeek and buy myself every linux shirt I can find. In your face MS admins!

Who cares!? It's a free game! You slashdot people even complain when you get free stuff. :P
It looks like you're attempting to sabotage European-Asian communications! Would you like to fire a torpedo?
Coal plants of course! Don't worry, it's green coal!
That's because according to the video, "rear control makes it more comfortable to use several fingers at once."
